Proposal: What players do the Winnipeg Jets need?

Recommended Posts

Watching Laines highlights recently, made me wonder that even a slight overpayment would be bearable if we got the 2nd pick from Winnipeg. What would it take to get the 2nd pick? we have an abundance of centres and it seems like they do as well

Im thinking

5th OV

Tanev

We're not getting any of the top 3/4 picks without a MASSIVE overpayment so just forget about it.

This franchise has little to no organizational depth so it's not like we're bargaining from a position of strength.

Now, if some GM out there wants to give us a MASSIVE overpayment to trade up to our #5, that's another story that I'm sure JB would be happy to entertain.

The Jets are stacked at almost every single position in terms of organization depth. They don't need any prospects. They also have Buff, Myers and Trouba who can play RD so Tanev is redundant (not like the Canucks can afford to move him anyway).

They need Laine.

To not play Pavelec. Oh that's not what we're talking about?

But Jazz has it right, they need Laine.

In many of the games I watched the Jets play, they had players like Perreault filling in a top 6 role, and players like Drew Stafford who isn't realistically a guy who produces numbers like a top 6 forward should. I feel like the Jets taking Laine is best for the organization to fill out that top 6.

You have to look at Winnipeg's needs before putting pieces together, aside from the 5th overall.

Tanev: Absolutely not needed. They have Byfuglien, Trouba, and Myers locked in as their RHD. They are so set for RHDers, that the only reason they haven't pulled the trigger on Hamonic is because, aside from him wanting to play in Winnipeg, the Jets have zero need for another defender on the right hand side. Not only that, but all those guys are better all around (offensive and defensive) than Tanev. For pure defensive defenseman, they already have Tucker Poolman in the pipeline, so Tanev is just redundant.

McCann: Again, not needed. They have Mark Scheifele and Bryan Little penciled in as their #1/#2 centers. On the third line, they have the perfect guy for a shutdown role in Adam Lowry. While his ceiling offensively may not be as high as McCann, he's an absolute beast to play against, which is what all teams want for a third line center. Therefore, McCann isn't needed.

So after that has been stated, now we come to the players available at #2 and #5. So, Patrik Laine vs. Tkachuk/Dubois/Nylander (as the Jets do not need another defenseman).

First thing, you need to look at what the Jets currently have on the roster and in the pipeline.

Left Wing:

- Nikolaj Ehlers

- Kyle Connor

- Mathieu Perreault

- Nic Petan (Left Wing or Center)

- Brendan Lemieux

- *Matthew Tkachuk*

- *Pierre-Luc Dubois* (Center/Left Wing)

- *Alexander Nylander*

Right Wing:

- Blake Wheeler (29 years old)

- Drew Stafford (29 years old)

- Joel Armia

- Alex Burmistrov

- Chris Thorburn

- JC Lipon

- Scott Kosmachuk

- *Patrik Laine*

Now that you've had time for someone else to do the incredibly simple leg work for you, which of the above do you think the Jets need more of when it comes to swapping draft picks and filling roles for the future?

They need Laine and they'll get him, this fell into their hands perfectly. A Dubois or Tkachuk would have been a nice consolation prize but oh boy are we about to see the next best line in hockey dominate.

Ehlers, Sheiffele and Laine are going to form the best line in the NHL for about a decade. That blend of speed and skill from Ehlers, defensive responsibility and clutch performances from Sheifele and that size and dominant skill from Laine is going to scare everyone in the West.

That's essentially a Pat Kane - Toews - Hossa line but dare I say with more potential. Best future line in hockey, plus those defenders and depth forwards leads for a future Cup contender if their goalie situation sorts itself out.
