ehdee
Alright here goes nothing, first thread here so shoot me if it is redundant. Just want to start a conversation. Does anyone else think it would be best for McCann to spend next season in Utica? With the way we are already filled out down the middle what kind of playing time will he get next year? If it's more of the same I think he would benefit more from being a first liner in Utica. Alright, thoughts?
VIC_CITY
lol...I'm tempted to be mean but I'm in too damn good a mood this morning. This has however been discussed in length. Barring an insane summer of training or a good batch of HGH, McCann will start next season in Utica. Welcome to the boards!
SedinMadness
ok no. why?. he is already proven nhl player that just needs more time.
TimberWolf
See what kind of camp he has but I think he'd be better off away from the tire fire for now should we go into next season with the same set-up as last. No point in minimal minutes on line 4 learning from overpaid fourth liners. Rather teach the kid to be a star, not a grinder.

I think the experience would do him good.

In my opinion he has at best proved he can be an inconsistent NHL player. I think a year in Utica would be huge for him. I'm not trying to knock the guy, I just want to see him developed properly. Bigturk8
While McCann plays with tenacity, he still looks like a kid. A very talented kid, mind you. I think over the next year or two, with lots of physical training, he's going to fill out and become an excellent top 6 NHLer. During that time however, I think it would suit him best to hone his professional game in the A. He's had a taste of the NHL and know's what to expect, If he came back in a year with an extra 15lbs of muscle and the confidence of a productive season in the A, I think the difference from last season would be night and day. He could; However, come to training camp in incredible shape and put on a show to force JB's hand and keep him around.
timberz21
Who knows ?!? It hasn't and can't be decided right now. McCann will get his shot a training camp. If he's bad, then down to Utica. If he's just ok or great, let him start the season and Vancouver. If he's not progressing like he did after the first half this year, then sent him down playing a lot of minutes. Bottom line, whether he's up or down should be based on his play, plain and simple.
You Mad Bro?
Sedin Sutter Horvat Granlund (ugh) He will be in Utica. And I hope he kills it
Sedinyoureyesontheprize
McCann will stick with the the Canucks next year. I hope he's on a vigorous training program and can come back much stronger next season and better in the face offs, those are the only two complaints anyone has of McCann and nothing a focused summer training can't fix. He could be our most talented centre skill wise so if he can round out his skill set sooner than later we could potentially have a top 2 Centremn. Fanuck
I'm convinced that ownership had a hand in both Virt and Canner staying up with the big club this year. Keeping those two kids in the show at that stage of their development is not what a seasoned hockey manager like JB would do on his own volition imo. Redundant now, but they could have each had monster years, played MVP minutes and had extended playoffs with their CHL clubs - it made no sense to keep them in the show other than to sell tickets and merchandise at the NHL level - thanks for that Aquaman, you did those kids a disservice IMO. Qwags
Let's see what kind of camp McCann and Virt have first.
Type R
My instinct would be to put him in an environment where he can dominate for half a year, or until injuries take their toll on our core centers. This does a few things, it gives him confidence in his abilities after a below average year with the big club, and it also gives him an opportunity to gel with some of our other up and coming players that are working their way through the farm. He was clearly in over his head this year. Although he performed admirably, he needs to get significantly bigger/stronger. Hence why he was being scratched so often. JB/WD wanted him to have more time focusing on weight training. This is how we look at center next year: 1) Henrik 2) Sutter 3) Horvat 4) Granlund 5) Vey (RFA) Plus we have Gaunce, who may or may not be another center depending on where WD/JB think he's better suited. McCann is not going to play 4C, he is not suited for the role, nor does it help his development. He needs big minutes and barring another injury riddled season, he isn't going to get those minutes in Vancouver. Unless he gains significant strength/size in the offseason, he will be in Utica and that's not a bad thing. He will get 1st line and 1st unit PP ice time. He may even kill penalties. He's only 19 years old. There's no need to rush him. Having said that, anything is possible. No one expected Ben Hutton to have the season he had last year, but I think the circumstances are going to be different for McCann than they were for Hutton. We have significant depth at C, something that we did not have on D last year. Sure, there's always a chance that McCann is moved to wing, but I am inclined to believe that management is nowhere close to writing McCann off as a center, as they shouldn't and that he just needs time to develop properly, as all prospects do. FireGillis
I think it's expected McCann will start the year in utica. I'd be shocked if he started the year with the canucks.

They apparently want to use the 4th line for developing players and no longer as a grind line - Benning thinks it's the new trend in the league. The overpaid fourth line player is likely going to be a 3rd line player. So McCann could be on the wing of Granlund who is pencilled in as C4 (not sure what they do with Baertschi if that happens though now that he is seen as not a fit with Horvat).
