Canucks had exclusive rights to Stathletes' NHL data in the Gillis era and lost it last year

Interesting article in The Globe about the new Coyotes GM. The interesting part is how far ahead Gillis was in terms of analytics back in the day before everyone else jumped on the bandwagon.

"Chayka’s big break came in 2012 when the Vancouver Canucks covertly flew Stathletes out for an in-depth presentation of their work. That turned into a lucrative – and exclusive – three-year contract with their first NHL team.

No one with the Canucks former management team would comment about Chayka’s involvement, but his reputation around the league grew from there. As soon as Stathletes’ deal with Vancouver expired, more teams were lining up to talk to them."

Right about the time the team started to decline.

Whatever the info they received was either wasn't utilized properly or didn't have an impact.

Well they either ignored the advanced info... or the "stathletes" actually told them David Booth is the missing piece and don't make any major moves after that, the team will sort itself out lol

We had already acquired Booth by then no?

They would have offered advice on Roy, Garrison, Barker, and Joslin I'm sure. Maybe provided some stats for drafting Gaunce as well?

So these are the guys that were saying that Booth is good.

Booth is an interesting case. He started his career very well with the Canucks. Then the knee on knee incident happened and he never was the same again. Maybe he overachieved that season or maybe he was never that good. We will never know.

Lamoriello would've bartered Stathletes rights for a 6th round pick.  This is just lousy asset management.

Yeah...I think that asset management is asset management.  Plain and simple.  Asset management.  Cause at the end of the day, you have to manage your assets.

I would say that our current management is anti-analytics but that isn't accurate given Benning's past statements - the current management is just ignorant of them.

Oh well, the advantage gap that analytics provided several years ago has narrowed since every team started using them. Now teams that don't use them (like the Canucks) are just at a disadvantage.

Advanced stats do not provide anything that would justify not using them be a disadvantage. Its a number made out of numbers that can easily be maniplulated to fit a certain context and not to mention that since there is no set in stone definition they can vary from team to team.

IE team A could have 15 hits registered but with a different team that 15 hits could become 25
