The is not me armchair gming but if the higher ups want to move it feel free.

I am one of those Canuck fans who believe we need a top end right handed dman. JB and TL have both said we don't have what it takes to make a hockey trade. They have also said that there is no top tier dman in this draft and not one that is right handed. But then I thought maybe we just got the biggest gift from the draft ever. The asset that we haven't really had to make a hockey trade. Truth is most Canuck fans wanted a top 3 pick now that we have the 5th pick my question is do we want it. Yes we will most likely get a very good prospect but even JB and TL have both said the prospect we will get at that position would not be NHL ready next season.

Before I go any further please note that I am only paraphrasing JB and TL if I am wrong about any thing I said they said I apologize in advance. This is not a topic of me criticizing management. I like our current management.

Now back to what I was writing.

This is not my proposal but an example of a defenceman I think could help the team. What if we could Pry a guy like Justin Faulk from Carolina away from them. The reason I think a guy like him would be a good fit for the Canucks; he is 24 years old fits with are current age group of players, a proven goal scorer, under contract for 4 years and good cap hit and most important Carolina has two other right handed dman in their system ( Brett Pesce and Ryan Murphy). My thought is after the Eric Staal trade Carolina could well be into a full rebuild.

A top pairing defenceman is more valuable than a first line forward. It is hard to acquire a top-two defenceman via trade, as you need to give up some solid assets as well. Teams around the league are trying to get younger, so along with the fifth pick, teams would be interested in a player like Horvat, McCann, Virtanen, etc. I personally would keep the fifth overall pick that the Canucks hold, and draft the best player available. Then, look to draft a defenceman in the later rounds.

I dunno about you but I want the 5th OAP pick and select either Tkachuk or Dubois.

I agree the 5th pick for a top tier dman is not going to happen I was not saying that. What I am saying is it gets the Canucks closer.

I agree with Vintage - the 5th overall alone will not get you a top end RHD.

And the additional pieces it would take would not be worth it in this stage for the franchise.

Keep the 5th overall, and if you must trade it - do so to move down a spot or two, in which case you could take the best D in the draft and potentially add a late 1st for moving down slightly (Calgary may be interested - they don't really need to add to their blueline, but could use a potential 1LW like Tkachuk - a lot - to throw on a line with Monahan and Gaudreau down the line).

My personal best case would be to add Chychrun/Juolevi in the 6 spot and get the pick Calgary acquired in the Russell deal (if that conditional Dallas 1st winds up in Calgary / or equivalent).  That late 1st and the 33rd would be a pair of nice additions - perhaps another D/pmd and a forward.

Otherwise pick at 5.

Getting that Dallas 1st and re-signing Hammer would be a sweet turn of events.

We need to draft Chychrun if edmonton doesnt take him

Hes ready to play allready , big strong defensemen with tons of upside, from a hockey family..

I like the kid to I have seen him play problem I have with him for the Canucks he shoots left. He really is a young man in a big mans body and he skates good for a big guy.

You guys can one day Quote me on this if I'm wrong and rub it in my face the scouts have it way wrong on Jakob Chychrun. He will be the best player to come out of this draft. I suspect that the only reason the experts have him lower is that he had fewer goals this season. But he did have more points.

He reminds me of a Drew Doughty type player.

Maybe but I have a feeling that title will go to Patrik Laine.
