Imagine if Canadian players cared as much about WHC as Europeans

Recommended Posts

Watching the Canada Finland game today, it is clear we have too many Oilers! When you look at Finland's line up they have pretty much every player available to them, even guys who played in the NHL playoffs.

Imagine if our best players cared as much about this tourney.

We could have Weber, Doughty, Keith, Seabrook, Subban on D.

Toews, Giroux, Johansen, Benn, Nash, Carter, up front.

Holtby and Luongo in net.

Pretty sure with that line up, Finland or anyone else doesn't stand much of a chance!

such a weak argument. we still have a decent enough team to beat anyone there. i hate how this excuse always gets made up for team canada at this tourney. 'we didn't win, but that's because we didn't care and we didn't have all of our best players there.' Seriously, canada has so many legit stars that it doesn't matter if they are all there. It's kind of embarrassing that canada needs to resort to saying that we dont have all of or players there as an excuse for not winning.

That's what the world cup of hockey is for.

If those guys would rather rest after an intense season and spend time with their families then they shouldn't be criticized by saying "they don't care". The rosters are primarily built of guys who played for NHL teams that didn't make the playoffs anyway. Canada's hockey pool is so deep too they can build 3 different squads at least that can win championships. Especially during the Sochi olympics TSN and Rogers built "Canada B" teams, those teams were also stacked, and you could build another roster after that too. Disregarding who else Canada has, going against a top line of Marchand - O'Reilly - Perry is pretty crazy in my opinion. Plus it's a good way to give guys like O'Reilly, Marchand, Hall, Talbot, Tanev, and Pickard some international play and experience since they're not really expected to make Olympic/World Cup rosters.

I am pretty sure Braden Holtby couldn't go.

My only point was that we could have the best team there. I understand why no one cares, its a losers tournament. Canadians want Stanley Cups!

Conversely I feel  most European players care more about WHC than the Stanley Cup.

I was just spit balling relax!

You are 100% right.  Most Euros do care more about the WHC than the Stanley Cup.

I bet you haven't watched Sweden too much. 7 NHL players on their rosters and only Markström and Nyquist have been good so far. The rest of the team, either decent or just simply horrendous. Performance-wise the worst swedish team i've seen in a while in the WHC. Stop with the ifs and buts, you guys still have the best roster in the whole tournament and EVERY SINGLE european doesn't accept as soon as they are invited to play for their country. That's ridiculous. BS like this annoys me, don't you get the feeling that all of this has been discussed before? Everyone knows that your country produces great hockey players, this discussion isn't unique by any means.

Your already great team could've been better, well no $&!#. That's pretty much the case for all of the other top international teams out there as well.

Only 8 of Finland's 25 players play in the NHL, among them are players like Pulkkinen (26 NHL games this season) and Rantanen (9 games) and not a single NHL defenseman. I wouldn't call that stacked.

Some posts here are pretty disrespectful towards European hockey.

I don't think much of Euro hockey as they transfer soccer style diving onto the ice. They all do it and now they are trying the same in NA. Tough to watch. IMHO the Finns are a bit different and play a tough brand of hockey that I admire. The Germans were making moves in the same direction then regressed.
