The Canadian
First of all can we even trade Hamhuis? I'm not sure how the UFA system works, so please tell me how it works. But if we can trade Hamhuis who can we get in return? Can Honka and Bowey be nominations because the caps and stars aren't rebuilding? If that trade works a positive is that both teams are in the east. I know it will make our defense weaker, but the worse we play the better prospect we get in the draft, so it is a win win situation. Can someone tell me how the UFA system works, and some Hamhuis trade options. It would be appreciated.

It just gives the team we trade him to exclusive bargaining rights until Hamhuis becomes a UFA. The return might be a fifth or even less.

Yes, we should resign him, but without any trade protection this time. Then TRADE HIS ASS.

So you like that Hamhuis screwed our team by refusing the Washington and Pitsburgh deals? The guy had a really good chance at a Cup, and said nope. Sing and trade him to Washington for M. Bowey. Then all will be as it should have been at the TDL.
Glory_Days
Didn't really screw us, if you would like to get mad at someone, get mad at Mike "I hand NTC's out like candy" Gillis. He's the one that gave pretty much half our roster NMC's, NTC's or modified NTC's. Would have been nice if we could have moved him, but we likely would have only gotten a 2nd and maybe...a prospect, don't kid yourself if you thought we would have gotten more0. Now Dan Hamhuis circa 2012, yes.
ButcherG
There may be some value for a UFA and its doubtful we have the room to re-sign him. If the Canucks can get a 4th or something for his rights, they should pounce on it.

It's his contract, he has the right to do what he wants, he's not breaking any rules, he's taking a discount to play here, he's a good leader on this team blah blah blah. The guy is the most overrated defenseman in the history of the NHL. Let him walk Luca Sbisa? Justin Schultz? I'm sure there's more... How is he the most overrated? Agreed with some of you, in that hopefully we can sign him, he has a good season and then we trade him to a contender at the deadline.
BaerToBo
20 minutes ago, The 5th Line said: What? Sbisa and Schultz get crapped on more than anybody out there! If anything, Sbisa is underrated. He's soft, he can't shoot, he can't pass and more goals go off of him in to our own net than he produces himself. He's solid defensively but people talk like his 4.5 mil cap hit is a bargain/discount when really it's the perfect price. He made the Olympic team over the likes of Giordano(who was nominated for the Norris 1 year later) Seabrook a 3 time Stanley cup champ. The guy didn't want to be away from his family for a couple months. I'm sorry but he is overrated and I will not want him here for more than 3 mil per year Seabrook and Giordano were being outplayed by Hamhuis at the time
Ferlands_Head
Why not just KEEP Hamhuis. He has more value to us than anything he can return in a trade. Realistically you're not going to get a guy like Bowey or Honka for a 33y/o Hamhuis.

Hamhuis, played D well enough, but he brought ZERO offence. Hometown discount? The guy was overpaid. Bring offense too, or be a bruiser, but to be a softy, who plays only one side of the puck is really nothing much. My wife thinks he's cute, like a sad puppy, so he does have that. If we can get a fifth for his rights, then it's an easy bye, bye.

Team Canada doesn't have one manager make the choice, it is a collaboration, and maybe Stevie Y, gets the deciding vote, but Hamhuis was in the mix and won.......no use anyone arguing about it anyways, this is 2016 As for Hamhuis today.......resign him to a 2 year at a discounted rate, that what he wants, he is not hiding it, and he actually does show excellent leadership.......never starts anything, never complains, still a decent 4/5......I see no reason not to resign him if the price is right Hey, I have a zillion posts saying we should have traded him, but that is because he was talented and had value....this trade deadline had more to do with trying to play up to the line, and now the Washington, the Dallas's etc are out and he would have helped them advance......... Same thing goes to Benning trying to squeeze that last bit of juice out...the fact is Benning waited too long and didn't pull the trigger fast enough......games were played and we lost, get over it! Again....Hamhuis is older, but still has some talent, and still deserves our respect.....a very decent human being and hockey player!

You know what we ACTUALLY need? Good players who are maybe less decent of human beings. This team isn't going to be ready to win a cup until it's not even cool to win a cup anymore. Well, sarcasm aside.........make a list of UFA dmen that you can sign for what Hanhuis will sign for........then hope they will sign here...........I am not saying he is a top 3, but he is one hell of a top 5, and can step it up for short periods........................ If you don't have answers, you really shouldn't say much..........bottom line is, you have not a clue, nor do I , of who will and won't sign here, but Hamhuis is all but a lock
