The White House was locked down this afternoon after the U.S. Park Police reported a shooting near the presidential residence.

Law enforcement sources tell ABC News one person has been shot by law enforcement near the White House, but not on the grounds. The condition of the person was not clear.

The president was not in the White House at the time.

Snipers took to the White House roof with guns drawn as people were cleared off the streets. Some people were heard screaming on Pennsylvania Avenue.

Additional information was not immediately available.

Might be nothing - Merica going to Merica. Proximity is curious though.

The White House was locked down for around 45 minutes this afternoon after a man carrying a gun near the complex was shot by Secret Service agents, a senior administration official said.

Just after 3 p.m., an adult male carrying a gun approached a Secret Service checkpoint on the outer perimeter of the White House grounds, near 17th and E Street Northwest.

The man ignored commands from Secret Service officers to drop his weapon, and began brandishing his firearm, the official said.

A Secret Service agent then fired a single shot at the suspect, wounding him, according to the official. He was then taken into custody and Secret Service personnel administered first aid.

The suspect was transported to a local hospital, where he is being treated.

The president was not in the White House at the time of the incident and the lockdown was lifted just after 4 p.m. Vice President Biden was reported to be “within the complex” at the White House, but is “secure," according to a spokesperson.

Clearly the politicians were not the real target.  One doesn't pull out a gun outside the Whitehouse unnoticed. And expect to shoot the President. This was obviously an attention issue.

Or a death by suicide notion...

Waits for the NRA statement: "SEE! Armed people shoot bad armed people! Gunz 4 Every1."

But the good guys, who had guns, did shoot the bad guy, who also had a gun.  Isn't that what we want - protection?  And yes, properly trained good people with guns will shoot the bad people.  God, the way this world seems to be heading, maybe it is safest if we pack heaters.

Then you wind up like the excited States where morons pack guns who think they can handle a tactical situation. And the high body count stats show accordingly. We don't always have laws that make sense here, but we have a good balance between the UK and the US. For example things like magazine disconnects are put in so that a round in the chamber won't go off if the magazine is dropped. It's a safety feature to make the firearm less likely to shoot accidentally. Yet there's a large group of people who remove it in the US (Have a look at youtube).

Common sense and America doesn't go hand in hand anymore.
