The Bourque Cup in Colorado

Recommended Posts

Hey guys

This isn't exactly topical, but is there anyone besides me that thought Boston trading Ray Bourque to Colorado was kinda blasphemy? He spent 21 years there and has a black and gold "B" stitched on his heart and soul. He'd been through everything with that team. I get that he wanted to win a Championship, but is it worth selling your soul for? IMO he never should have worn another uniform. I know I'm in the small minority here as it seemed like everyone was reaching for the tissues when Joe Sakic handed him the Cup (I still think this was a very nice moment), but it never sat well with me, him wearing that Colorado uniform. Plus they retired his number in Colorado, seriously???? Anyone out there agree with me?

Blasphemy?  Selling your soul?  I think that's a being a tad dramatic.  I also think it's a little selfish to hold it against him.  If he could see the writing on the wall that there was no chance of winning the Stanley Cup in Boston after all he had given that team, why not move on to another team that has a better chance?  It's not like he went to the Canadiens or some other bitter rival.

I bet if you took a poll of lifelong Bruins fans, you would find the majority were happy for him.

He wanted to go win a Cup.

Even if he hadn't wanted to move, to me it's overkill to get that emotional over players and hockey teams. He's an athlete who makes millions playing a game. Players leave teams for more money or a nicer city all the time. No big deal. I'm sure he'd rather have a Cup ring. At the end of the day that's what they play for.

These guys spend their entire childhoods, teenage years and adult life first practicing and praying they can make the NHL, then working their ass off when they get to the show. Why do they do it? They do it because they dream of winning a cup. Holding that big glorious silver mug. Sure, there is other reasons, the passion for the sport, and obviously money, but its always a childhood dream to win a cup. I'm sure that was Bourque's dream too, and personally I think its disgusting how selfish and dehumanizing some peoples outlook on players who go after a Cup is. So no, I dont think him leaving for a cup was blasphemy, but I do think its very disrespectful how fans completely look past the fact that players are still just humans, with hopes and dreams too.

Would the attitude be different if he hadn't won a cup there?

I don't think in have the right to an opinion on the topic. That sort of decision is up to the individual and not really my right to say he should have done this or that.

That being said when one of our players who have Been there whole career with us leaves at the end of there career it kind of disappoints a bit

 OhLund for example

I get where you're coming from, but when a team that you've invested your heart and soul into hasn't had a decent shot at a cup it becomes a bit redundant. I can't blame Ray for wanting out so he could win a cup. Everyone was happy for him when he won that cup, he wanted it badly so he did what was necessary to obtain that goal.

It was the right thing to do. Bourque wanted a cup, the Bruins weren't going to win. Bourque deserved that Cup. Watching Willie Mitchell win a cup in LA was amazing, because he really deserved it, even though he didn't win in our colours. If Lu wins in Florida, same thing. So it was the right thing to do.
