[Discussion]Depth Wingers.....

Recommended Posts

I'm thinking JB should try and go after one of these wingers, somewhere in the neighborhood of 2.5 for 2-3 years.  IMO any one of these guys can be a solid 3rd line or possible top 6 winger, can play the PK etc. and are in their prime or soon to be prime years.  All have proven they can play in the NHL and thus they are deserving of a solid contract.  I believe these guys make good depth players, which the Canucks were lacking last season.

Dale Weise: I have no problem bringing the Dutch Gretzky back.  He brings a lot of elements the Canucks need like speed and toughness.  I think he would thrive under WD.  RH shot

Trevor Lewis: I think this guy is ready to take another step as well.  Played up and down the Kings line up all season and skates hard after pucks.  His points totals don't reflect how good his overall game is.  RH shot too

Matt Martin: If you watched any of the Islanders playoffs you'll know why this guy could really help in the Western Conference

Shawn Matthais: I think the Canucks wanted to give their prospects more of a look last season, so Shawn was let go.  Even though he isn't a guy that hits much, he is big and strong on the puck, skates well and can put up a decent amount of points.  IMO I'd like to see him line up with Sutter, and allow Baertschi to play 3rd line mins alongside Bo.

Is that 2.5 to 3.5 AAV for 3 years?

Sorry I just edited the topic, but yes, somewhere in that ballpark seems fair for 2-3 years depending on the player.

IMHO, $2.5M to $3.5M AAV for any of those players isn't money-balling.  I agree that they are all good depth forwards, who wouldn't look bad on the Canucks roster, and give some of the 20-21 year olds in the Canucks system time to hone their game.

I agree that 3.5 is very much on the highside, and in hindsight somewhere closer to 2.5 seems about right for the organization and fair to the player.  And exactly, my idea was that these are good players that can help the team 'win' while taking some of the pressure off of the younger players.

I like the idea of bringing in Martin and Lewis, and heck, even Dutch Gretz, but I wouldn't want them to bring back Matthias. With him I see a lot of potential, but it never seems to pan out. Kind of like David Booth.

You know, everyone talks about a big free agent signing, but I think the Canucks really need their depth players to step up. Perhaps moving on from Burr or Higgy and signing a couple FA's is just what the doctor ordered

Well Goose, these guys are certainly depth players, but don't we want to have our young prospects in those spots, so they can develop: Gaunce, Granlund, Zelweski, Grenier, Paden, Vertanen, McCann, etc.?

The only problem is with them and their contracts would anyone bite.

Of course, but what does that have to do with keeping spots open for our up and coming prospects?

I just noticed that you failed so miserably to spell three of the seven names! Either that or we have a few guys in Kalamazoo that I didn't know existed :D

What does correct spelling have to do with leaving spots open for our prospects?  We brought in guys like Richardson and Matthias a couple of years ago, and all that got us was a late first round pick, after a beating by the Flames in the playoffs.  Playing the young kids this season got us the fifth pick.  Playing them (again) next season should get us another top five pick.

Your idea is novel, but there is zero chance JB does that, unless it's the owner foolishly pushing to make the playoffs in hopes of getting a few more bucks in his pocket. (ps. there is a misspelled word - have fun searching for it!:P)

You totally misunderstood me, which is ok because I know you are drunk. I meant unless there is someone on KZoo named Vertanen, Paden or Zelewski that I don't know about.

Quite literally I did not at any point try to say anything relevant to this discussion. I apologize for wasting your time haha! I failed at finding your mistake . I did notice however that you tend to use run-on sentences, you may want to consider that too!

I've wanted Matt Martin for years.

Would be thrilled if we managed to land him.

I really don't see why we would spend extra cash to land a guy like Martin when we are in the process of developing prospects. I would rather throw Gaunce in as the 4th line winger instead.
