Yes because I don't wrongly think he's a criminal steroid user.

And he makes our team tougher and better.

If he manages to cut out the garbage like handshake line incidents and being incapable of taking a clean hit like a man, maybe it wouldn't be so bad.  That's a hell of a risk to take though.

Not sure why people are bringing toughness and Okposo into the same conversation.

He has decent weight at his height (6'0 217) but far from imposing. He also has a grand total of THREE fights over his NHL career.

He is a scorer first and foremost, not a physical or intimidating presence. I think Lucic is a class A douchebag and do not like him, but he adds exactly that.

It's something the Canuck's have been missing since the Crawford days.

Lucic puts up 50+ every single year while also being a huge intimidation factor. Who cares if he gets suspended from time to time. After the Sedins, the next best forward for the Canucks was Horvat.

With 40 points.

Hate him all you want. He'd make the Canucks better.

I think having Gudbranson will allow Hutton to play the offensive zone more as basically a 4th forward.

If Hutton scores more goals this year you can likely credit Gudbranson in part for that. Hutton had to be careful this year cuz he spent so much of it with guys like Sbisa and Weber.

Trickle down effect of having a guy like him.

I would go as far as saying that Gudbranson will have his production increased too. For one, he won't be heavily relied on purely defensive zone starts (57.4 and 59% dzone starts the past two seasons), as the load will be shared between the Edler-Tanev pairing and Hutton-Gudbranson. Moreover, because of the Edler-Tanev pairing, he'll face a slightly lower competition at times. Lastly, Hutton and the forwards will surely be looking to feed the puck back to Gudbranson to unleash his booming slapshot, adding an additional threat to the Canucks offense.

Holy crap... I finally caught up after reading 117 pages since I saw the trade announced during the 1st intermission of TB vs PIT Game 7.  NOW FINALLY I GET TO POST!!!!!

My initial reaction:  Screamed out loud "OH MY GAWWWDDDDDD!!!!!" woke my baby who I was holding, and caused my whole family to freak out... (YEAH I LOVE THIS DEAL!!!!!!)

I didn't care about picks, didn't care about losing Jared....  WE GOT GUDBRANSON... OMG!

Called my buddy - left msg: "Now NOBODY GETS TO CROSS OUR BLUE LINE FOR FREE ANYMORE, HEADS UP!"

What a deal. I do this trade anytime, and everytime.

So many good posts and discussions throughout this thread... man.   From the physicality he will bring, and how its gonna rub off on the entire team ohhhhh baby!!!!!  Maybe he can teach Tanev how to hit, or remind Edler how he used to, poor Sbisa's has had to answer the bell to guys wayyy outta his league.  If we retain Sbisa, hes only gonna hit more, he won't have to lay his body against the big dudes, leave that for 44, sbisa can now focus on targeting guys on his own size...  (I feel like people undervalue Sbisa's mobility...)

All the cheap shot crap bulls**t that we've endured, there is now the possibility of Mutual Assured Destruction, target our soft guys... we now have a hammer to nail yours, THINK TWICE.

Trymankin.... he plays more of a soft role for his size, he didn't really show a mean side to me... sure he kniocked some guys over and stuff butt theres no nastyness, from what I've observed, not like Pedan, you can tell from Pedan's game that hes got bite... hope 44 can make our 88 hate.

Watched 4 mins of the start of game 1 NVI VS FLD... 3 mins in, campbell gets crosschecked from behind in front of Lui, instead of reacting to this cheap shot, 44 jumps into the rush, and was WIDE OPEN for a huge one timer... but no pass to him.... excellent footspeed to get into the play, and a great decision to not take a penalty, early on, with all the adrenalin goin on.  Stopped watching after that... was worried that this post would be at pg 150.,.. i'll watch more, thanks deniro.

Cmon.... gretz vs orr vs mario again... 99.

Did you pinch yourself?  I know I have been - frequently.  Your post deserves a plus 100.  I kind of feel sorry for the Florida players.  I'm sure it's more than just Willie and Lui who are thinking - WTF.

Not sure if it's been posted, but I found this: http://www.litterboxcats.com/2016/5/27/11789054/erik-gudbranson-a-look-back-at-a-player-i-will-miss

It's from a site comparable to Florida's Canucks Army. Here are a few important parts...

-In 2014-15... he was used heavily on the defensive side of the rink by coach Gerard Gallant, starting 57% of his shifts in the D-zone, and only 42% in the offensive zone.

-This season... Gudbranson only started 41% of his shifts in the offensive zone, and averaged 20 minutes of ice time per game. He dished out 150 hits and 73 blocked shots this season, and was only able to get off 73 shots.

-It's hard to put up possession numbers when every time you move a puck up in transition to offense you are swapped out. It was rare to see Gudbranson in the offensive zone. Instead, it was always him duking it out with the opponents top line and once transition began, he changed for a more offensive D-man.

-In this year's playoffs, Erik led all Panthers D-men in time on ice, at almost 27 minutes per night, and he started 71% of his shifts in the D-zone. By midway through the 1st round series, Gudbranson and Kulikov were the go-to D-pair for crucial moments against the Islanders.

-Erik will not be remembered by Panther fans for goals and assists, it is not what he was positioned to do in the gameplan. He will likely be recalled fondly as a player always first to defend a teammate, to make Sunrise a difficult and intimidating place to play, and for quiet leadership. He learned much from his partner Willie Mitchell, one of the finest leaders the Panthers have had in a decade.

-I finish with this, my own story of coming into contact with Gudbranson. Erik appeared on behalf of the Panthers at the draft in Sunrise, just to give the franchise a face I suppose. But when he saw my young son in a jersey with his name on it, he called him over and asked for a marker because he "had to sign this one." It was one of several times where he showed maturity, a natural friendliness, and a connection to the South Florida hockey community that I got to see first hand.

As much as I love the idea of trading a prospect for a solid top-4 defenceman, the article bleeds truth. We need to use analytics more and start stepping away from this old school mentality of toughness wins hockey games and playoff games. Look at these playoffs - skill has completely predominated in the playoffs. Grit and toughness is nothing nowadays.

We need more puck movers on defence and more elite top end talent up front. Instead we're growing shutdown defencemen and two-way centers. That would have been fantastic for the 2007 playoffs or earlier but now the playoff games are won and lost by star centers/wingers, puck moving stud defencemen and lucky young goalies.

Due to bad drafting over the past several years this team is in desperate need of young fully developed talent. That range of player under 26 but more developed than a Horvat.

Pretty much this is an almost fully developed Dman. Over the next two years he'll get better when he completely fills into his body.

What's happened in Edmonton is they had top picks but no one to help those top picks. No forward depth and No D depth. JB is trying to build that foundation in Vancouver right now.

JB made a good decision with this trade. And I"m a rebuild thru the draft guy. There are significant holes in the 23 to 26 age group here, we need better players who will be around 30 when our future number 1C and the likes of Boeser, Horvat and Virtanen are fully developed and this team is ready to contend.

If we drafted a Dman with our 5th overall this year it would take him 5 years to get to where Gudsy is right now. We'd be pretty happy if he developed into a top 4 Dman like Gudsy already is.

This is just forwarding the rebuild a bit and bringing more young developed players in. JB did same with Baertschi. Tried it with Vey but lost that one.

Hutton Gudsy top pair in 4 years is a real possibility.

How exactly did he "lose it" with Vey? I don't recall Barchi being all that much better, just that Vey was the designated whipping boy and Sven wasn't,

With McCann gone, guess what? THE VEY STAYS!

And this season he's going to show the Bo-boy haters how to get 50 pts in the NHL

Definitely meaner. Even if Ohlund hit hard, he didn't have a mean streak per se. Ohlund definitely was more poised with the puck and patrolling the point offensively.

Guddy will help us, that's for sure. If it'll just (or mostly) be defensively or if he'll help offensively is the question.

Ohlund was no Konstantinov but made a decision later in his career, oddly enough, to start fighting,

I believe it was due to the fall out from his sometimes devastating hits,

Hitting is a skill as much as it is a sign of aggressiveness, there are plenty of aggressive tough guys in the league who couldn't hit their way out of a paper bag, and at this point I don't know whether that's a skill Gudbranson posses,

Ohlund on the other hand had the Stevens-like instinct, modern day examples would be Emilin or Kronwall, guys who could see where people were going to be in 2 seconds and seemly without effort, be the magically appearing brick-wall they ran into.

It really is a skill, and I hope GB possesses it, a sure sign that someone DOESN'T have it is when you see them chasing people for hits, running around and getting a little piece of the guy as he skates away, those "Hits" are counted in the stats but they are meaningless, and more often than not put your own team at a disadvantage.

I think Ohlund was the last monster hitter to play for this team,

OH! BTW did you guys know Ohlund is still "officially" a member of the lightning? and is still required to go to all the home games?

Before their run was over, at every home game, Matty was there somewhere in the cheap seats

Huh?

Are we watching the same thing? The playoffs have been physically brutal this year, everyone has been hitting everything that moves,

Guys like Kane disappeared in a hurry, I would say meanness rules the playoffs more than ever

He is right.

Who cares about 2011.  5 years ago man. Grow up and get over it.

If, Lucic can bring a cup to Vancouver, why wouldn't you want hi on your team?

Because he played like a beast against us in the playoffs?   Good.  That's what we need.

Nobody had a problem with us signing Willie Mitchell, and he was the #1 reason we lost to Minnesota years back.

Im sick of all this emotional attachments people have to players.

I like who is gonna make us win.

Personally, when is comes to a sport you are trying to win a championship. Not make friends.  I don't care about class off the ice, I don't care if they play dirty.

As long as they win

The only thing I wonder about Lucic is if he does come to Vancouver, does Miller then request a trade? Miller is gone after this season anyways but it'd definitely create some dressing room drama I would think.

Ive read quit a bit on the analytic assessment of Gud.  Theres a thread in Canucks talk that really helps break down his fancy stats vs Vancouvers D.

Even within the stats, he will still be among Vans top 3 D, and given that most of his success came along side a puck carrying D, Hutton should be a decent fit should he continue to grow as a player.  Nice that theyre the same age as well.

Really though, since all we can do is listen to opinion until the season is underway, judgment on him really should wait until the proof is in the pudding.  New coaches, systems, etc...  Metrics cant tell you on how moving teams will effect a players performance.

At this point Im quite pleased with the addition.  No metric for snarl and being able to be the boss of the crease.  The more shots our goalies see, makes it easier to stop.  The guy will be clearing traffic for our netminder, whichll lead to yes, more shots against.  We all know how much of a difference Mitchell made on our team in his prime.  His numbers are not flattering either.

I guess it really is all about the trend of anaylitics.   Some are in love and think its the be all and end all, but I dont believe personally for it to be important for every role on your team.  What you want to see is a team metric.  Gud wont be helping that, and it is an area the Canucks need to be better in.  Eriksson should help.
