Any word on the validity of this? Anybody know anything about this Igor guy? I'm skeptical here

Whenever I see (') as opposed to (") I take it as an instant indication that it's very likely a paraphrase as opposed to an actual quote.

And further, anything written - claimed to be sourced - is different than audio, where you have a word for word that is not manipulable.

Good call to reserve judgement.

He probably has to use (') as opposed to (") because the interview was conducted in Russian. Its virtually impossible for direct translations.

Except Daniel and Henrik whined and everyone not named Horvat, Hutton or Tanev dogged it at some point this season.  So it doesn't work if you only go after the youngings.

They've never "whined" about their roles. Calling out guys is something pretty extreme for these guys, I think I'd take them at their word.

Probably, maybe, who knows, I don't know.

Which is why I reserve judgement.

McCann always seemed a little intense, played with a big chip on his shoulder. I sensed when he was drafted that he felt he should've been picked higher, maybe drafted by a better team, etc. Maybe he's a bit of a primadonna and Benning will have none of that. This is also why we won't get Drouin.

Getting drafted higher means you're going to a worse team for the most part.

Also Benning should've done his homework as a scout...if this guy has character issues why take him? For example, Pastrnak was taken one spot behind him.

Maybe to later leverage him into a stud RHD from an overeager and overconfident analytic guru who doesn't understand how intangibles are actually a thing in pro sports?

Just a guess...

This is not the information I was looking for.

Don't keep me in suspense...

I don't usually wade into here - it was just a 'I see this'

I guess I should ask - are you suggesting that when they drafted him that was their intention?

Or was that they planned on using McCann in some sort of deal this summer?

Neither really... it was a retort to the suggestion that Benning failed as GM for taking McCann. Or trading him. Or not.

However, I would suggest that sometimes players are drafted as trade fodder, yes. If you believe you are getting a player that will later be valued more than at the position you selected him at then it makes sense to take him even if he doesn't fit into your plans. I'm certain there have been instances when players were taken because they were early bloomers and showed well right off of the hop, and this is more common in the late 1st and 2nd. I'm not saying that's what happened with McCann at all but when he fell to us at 24th, in management's view, and he had a breakout year the next season then it's imaginable that they didn't believe he would take it to another level in junior so they kept him up on the team and made their deliberation of his value on the market from that point.

Really, when you grab a faller they may not be your preference but the best asset value.

And, personally, I would have used this one...
