For everyone that hates this trade just look at it from this point of view.

Would you trade your 1st round 26th Overall, 33rd and 93rd for 3rd Overall and a 5th?

Most of you would do that in a heartbeat

That's a terrible way to look at the trade.

both teams lost the ballard deal.  both teams also lost on the booth deal.  van destroyed on the jovanovski and luongo deals.

it is actually weird how through so many different GMs on both sides that these teams get together for trades.

Wouldn't say we won the jovo trade... We picked smith with the first overall and they got a guy who won rocket Richards with them. Other than that, I definitely agree! The luongo deal was probably the biggest rob job in Vancouver history. Until we traded him away

We owned the Luongo trade back in the day. Bure/Jovo was obviously not a win for us but it was pretty much a good trade if you take the situation into consideration. We just had the worst possible drafting days going for us at that time and a poor and long way of a rebuild too. At no point did I feel we lost out on something there as Bure was never gonna play for us anyways. garner was obviously not gonna be there long but Weekes wasn't exactly the goalie we thought he'd be and FLA knew that so we got fooled there.

Meanwhile in Edmonton...

Edmonton Oilers ‘grind away’ behind the scenes to secure a puck-moving defenceman

Jim Matheson, Postmedia Network | June 27, 2016 1:04 PM ETMore from Postmedia Network

BUFFALO, N.Y. — The Edmonton Oilers hit the jackpot when the ridiculously talented Finnish right-winger Jesse Puljujarvi fell to them at the NHL Entry Draft, but they are not coming back with a ready-made defenceman to get the puck to Connor McDavid.

No way, no how for P.K. Subban.

But nobody else, either. No No. 1 defenceman — nor a No. 2 or a No. 3, either.

Oilers general manager Peter Chiarelli is working overtime on the issue — the potential for a trade that would send centre Ryan Nugent-Hopkins to the Minnesota Wild for defenceman Matt Dumba certainly has legs.

But not straight up; maybe the Oilers would like to get a second-round draft pick in 2017 to hand off as compensation to the Boston Bruins for hiring Chiarelli. They may also like Wild centre Joel Ek-Eriksson, a first-round pick from last year, although Minnesota would not be crazy about moving him.

Tom Szczerbowski/USA Today

Tom Szczerbowski/USA TodayOilers general manager Peter Chiarelli is working overtime on the team’s defensive shortcomings — the potential for a trade that would send centre Ryan Nugent-Hopkins to the Minnesota Wild for defenceman Matt Dumba certainly has legs.

Maybe they would expand the deal to, say, send Minnesota-raised Matt Hendricks to the Wild. The heart-and-soul Hendricks is entering the last year of his US$1.8-million deal with the Oilers.

And there’s talk Chiarelli is also looking at New Jersey Devils defenceman Damon Severson, who played junior hockey with the WHL’s Kelowna Rockets. But again, the Oilers have not filled their gaping need for a puck-moving, right-shooting blue-liner.

“I can understand the fans’ frustration, but you have to make the right deal. I’m having lots of discussions,” Chiarelli said on Saturday. “It’s hard to get a No. 1 defenceman. There are not many — over half the teams don’t have one. There are deals out there we’re working on that have good defencemen. They’re smart, they can move pucks. Different players. As I’ve said, I’d prefer a right-shot defenceman. That’s what I’m focusing on.

By picking Puljujarvi and left-winger Tyler Benson, who would have been a mid first-rounder if he hadn’t been hurt and who played just 30 games for the WHL’s Vancouver Giants last season and fell to the second round, their cupboard is full of young forwards — McDavid, Taylor Hall, Nugent-Hopkins, Jordan Eberle and Leon Draisaitl among them.

“Puljujarvi is a lot more likely to play than other guys behind him (in the draft). I always thought the first three (Auston Matthews, Patrik Laine and Puljujarvi) could play right away. It creates a different dynamic when we’re trying to retool the roster,” said Chiarelli.

Could he be Jari Kurri to Wayne Gretzky?

“Well, he’s a really complete player with an underrated shot. Yeah, there are some similarities,” he said.

They have three offensive centres in McDavid, Draisaitl and RNH, and Nugent-Hopkins, at age 23, might be the one to go. Minnesota needs a centre. They have too many defencemen. Dumba, the seventh choice at the 2013 draft, is the Wild’s bargaining chip along with Jonas Brodin, but Dumba shoots right.

“You have to grind away. A couple of discussions I had today, their positions had softened,” said Chiarelli, who would probably like a defenceman before free agency begins July 1.

“I had positive discussions this week. If I didn’t, I’d be disappointed. Whenever there’s a deadline, things loosen up. The next one is July 1.”

Dumba, who turns 22 next month, is farther advanced than Darnell Nurse, but not as far along in his development as Oscar Klefbom. He had 10 goals and 26 points in 81 games this season. He’s played 139 NHL games.

“He’d be one more young player there, but you have to take steps,” said TSN commentator Craig Button.

It will be McCann, a second and a fourth for Gudbranson and a fifth.

Oilers have traded Taylor Hall to New Jersey for Adam Larsson. More to come on TSN.ca

I'd say Jim was ahead of the pack , today is proof :)

The Hall trade makes this trade look fantastic! I was a fan of the trade then, and even more so now. Benning really was ahead of the game here. Well done! Excited to see him play!

We knew Edmonton had to over pay, JB knew it long ago. Slick move beginnings part

As Ferraro said, if you are a left handed defender in the NHL, learn to play right handed

I believe the speed of the game is making players rove from side to "off-side" more often,. It's going to be less of game type that is read,. But more of a game type where loud vocal communication will be heard.

a recognizable "switch!" , "my side!",

"Take point!" , "got point!", "I'm in"..

should be hear loud and clear... "Old time hockey" & bacon.

Hall was their best player for the last few year. At least in the games I have seen. Everyone whining about trading McCann for Gudbranson should really look at this comparison.

Ask yourselves, who would you rather? Gudbranson or Larsson? (Gudbranson IMO)

Again who would you rather? Hall or McCann? (Hall by a mile)

Benning fleeced the Panthers. I swear something is wrong with their GM, some of the players they are trading were a huge part of their success last year.

It's funny that this has become the prevailing opinion - when you read the first half of this thread....

Gudbranson brings nothing than what we already have on our current defensive core.

How on this planet is this idiot still a GM? Who makes this trade? Of all the quality dmen in Florida, he takes the almost worst. And then adds in picks?!?

We just acquired a slightly better version of Sbisa except we paid a much higher price.

Benning will do much more harm to this team making trades than he ever will do good from drafting.

We need better scouts and a GM that can make good trades, not one that is only good at scouting.

Just when I thought this would be a good offseason for us...

You're telling me McCann and the 33rd couldn't have got us a better defenseman than Gudbranson?

We'll never learn making trades with Florida.
