[Trade] Canucks trade Jared McCann, 2nd-round pick, 4th-round pick to Panthers for Erik Gudbranson, 5th-round pick

Recommended Posts

IF it IS the 2017 2nd round pick

Than this is an absolutely beautiful move one which is hard to gripe about

It is hard if it is the 2016 because we can see that value now, we've analyzed every player within that range of 33.

2017, weaker supposed draft no idea where we'll finish turns out we may get the Columbus pick to replace.  All good.

CBC hockey guys think Florida got hosed "Apparently they think 6'5" D young d men grow on trees".

Some people here are assuming that McCann will become a top 6 NHL regular.  There is nothing in his game that showed that, nothing.  He may turn out to be fantastic, but he may also fizzle out a la Cody Hodgson.

Watching videos of this Gudbranson he actually reminds me of Chris Pronger, but without the offensive ability. All though you look at his OHL stats his PPG improved in every year, so maybe it will still come. Seeing how Dale Tallon drafted this guy gives me more hope, swear he had the West mentality when drafting this guy.

Regarding McCann, no doubt the kid has skill, but he lacks the size and strength big time. He probably will be a better fit in the East, and have a better chance at succeeding over there anyways. It's the picks that I don't agree with, obviously Tallon is a tough cookie, but McCann and 2nd was enough. With 2nd and 4th picks, we should be getting the 3rd back not the 5th.

Don't let the door hit you on the way out..........

It won't I'm pretty careful. Still will watch every game just won't be paying attention to FA or the drafts until Benning is gone.

It's funny I've always laughed at the Leafs and their fans. Now their laughing at us. Full circle.

Stay at home coming into his prime former THIRD OVER ALL Dman, for a what if one dimensional small softie.

Great trade.

We had a former 3rd overall D man once

Will the Canucks have the slowest defense in the league next year? Yes, one or two defensive dmen with size and grit is OK, but the league is getting faster and more skilled.

Tryamkin has shown good positioning can compensate for that.

But you're right we still need to get much more mobile on the back end.

Thank god I'm also a Jets fan as well as a Canucks fan. I get to see a stark difference for two rebuilds for two teams I follow closely. One that is patient, doesn't trade away draft picks, and drafts both offense and defense. And one that, well, does something else entirely.

Of course it has more to do with the fact that the first example is more what you wanted which is why you praised it.

A second round pick with a GM who's good at scouting has alot of value. Thatcher Demko is one example of that picks value.

By your own logic, don't you think that Benning knew exactly what he was passing on when he traded the 2nd? If he saw something that was too good to pass on, he wouldn't have made the trade. So if you trust him to draft with that pick, why not trust him to trade it?

Also, Gudbranson is RFA at the end of his current contract, not UFA.

TSN says 2017 Canucks.com says 2016.

TSN, the same group that had Iginla going to Boston

I am hoping it is a 2017....that's acceptable, but damn a 2016 is hard to lose with the draft being so close

The writing was on the wall when Benning was asked about the future core of this team and McCann's name wasn't mentioned. As for the 2nd and 4th for a 5th; Maybe other teams were in on it and Benning had to pay the price to get a player that we need. We now have more options with regards to d-pairings,and more importantly, more size and physicality from our back-end.

Gudbranson faced the strongest quality of competition on Florida's blueline.

Had the lowest offensive zone starts on Florida's blueline.

20+ minutes a game.

Elite, young shutdown D who had some upside in his OHL days - with a huge shot.  Hasn't played opportune situational minutes in Florida - there's room for more upside - but regardless, he's the kind of huge presence that will make life a lot easier on his team-mates - particularly Edler and Tanev.
