[Trade] Canucks trade Jared McCann, 2nd-round pick, 4th-round pick to Panthers for Erik Gudbranson, 5th-round pick

Recommended Posts

Just going to point out folks the last few D trades

Hamilton gave up a first and 2 2nds

Ryan Heart gave up the 15th overall and 33rd picks

Jared is the 24th overall and than a 33rd overall pick is not exactly like Jim got taken to the market its what the prices of the defense man is going for.  We even came under the price a bit as both other trades gave up higher first round picks than our team did.  All and all though can't really know how the trade will work until we see him play.

What makes this trade even harder to swallow is that it indicates that Canucks are likely to move on from Hamhuis. So that rips the old scab off the poor deadline disaster of this year too.

For or those who say Gud is a top four defencemen, there are a lot of questions if he will ever be that. At best he is a bottom six guy.

Benning stated McCann will be a top six forward.

I haven't seen too many trades like this:

Bottom 6 Dman, 5th rounder for

Potential top six forward, 2nd rounder, 4th rounder.

This trade stinks of desperation for a right hand shot and it will come back and haunt Vancouver.

Gudbranson makes this team that much more intimidating to play against.  That defence at the beginning of the year was way to easy to play against.  Add him and Tryamkin to the mix, gone are the days where players can plant themselves in front of the net comfortably.

Erik and Nikita make things that much more harder.

No question we got much tougher today.

But unless Canucks fans just want "moral victories" by pounding on teams in the West, Benning has alot more work to do to add offense from the back end.

Love how McCann was suddenly "never going to make it as a Canuck" as soon as he's moved in a highly questionable trade.

Next year's forwards, even with McCann as an option:

Sedin - Sedin - Hansen

Baertschi - Horvat - Etem

Virtanen - Sutter - Rodin

Gaunce - Granlund - Dorsett

Burrows (McCann)

That's before signing a much needed UFA, from which we'll have the cash. Then you look at our future core of forwards with the 5th overall:

Tkachuk/Dubois, Horvat, Virtanen, Baertschi, Boeser - that would fill in most of the top 6, with Gaunce/Granlund/Etem in the bottom 6. There wasn't room for Jared, either in next year's lineup or in the future core.

Are you serious? Did you not see what he did to Hendricks this year?

Yes he can fight, Dorsett will be happy he doesn't have to earn those extra contract dollars as much now.

I'm just pissed today, so what ever. Gudbranson is a great shut down d man with high d zone starts, but it's the old home run swing for the double trade again. BAH! I know we will feel like we just got our Willie Mitchell back, maybe even Sami Salo, but it's just annoying losing high end skill.

Hero Charts are just one piece of evaluating a player.

Ok, so what are the other pieces in evaluating Gudbranson as anything more than a bottom pairing d?

You asked why they improved away from Gudbranson...

That is because when they spend time away from each other (i.e one changes, one doesn't), Cambell actually does better without Gudbranson.

the dman picked at 33 could be good down the road but dont forget we just signed stetcher.

also we will win in the west with a guy like gudbranson over mccann. dont get me wrong I like Mccann a lot too. I really wish that the 2nds would be used more often. mccann and 3rd would have been better but may not have completed the deal.

I wonder though if there is any chance at edler being moved after this and still bringing hamhuis back to fill that spot for 3 years.

I completely understand everyone's reservations about this trade and some others, but we don't know everything about JBs long term plans.  Trades as a whole don't happen in a vacuum,  they intertwine with other moves we don't know about yet.  JBs still dealing with leftovers from the previous regime and an ownership mandate to make the playoffs at all costs.

I'll reserve judgement for now,  but go on record stating I love what EG brings to this club.

If someone would have told me three years ago Kesler and a couple of draft picks would have fetched us Gudbranson, Sutter and Sbisa. I would have punched myself right in the face

Funny thing is the Kesler trade is not even 2 years ago yet!

Not happy about this one.  McCann IMO is our best centre prospect that has the potential for top line, and then you throw in the 33rd pick in a very deep draft.  Erik isn't that great anyways.  Hopefully he flips it to Edmonton for RNH or something
