Because JB and Trevor don't think he has the jam to be an effective NHL'r. Same with Jensen and Shinkaruk.

He's a pretty good judge of young talent. Virtanen, Boeser, Demko, Tryamkin.

JB doesn't want soft guys. They don't think he can handle the grind and is too small. Like Jordan Schroeder.

Who needs McCann when we have Cole Cassles after the monster year he had?

Not that upset with the price. McCann & a 2nd for a top 4 D man is a fair price. Swapping 4th and 5th round picks seems unnecessary. But whatever. Not like those will amount to anything most likely.

Think this guarantees Hamhuis is gone though. Gotta wonder about Sbisa too. Do Canucks really need Gudbranson, Tryamkin, Sbisa, AND Pedan? Probably not. Especially if they still plan to bring in Larsen.

Edler-Tanev

Hutton-Gudbranson

Tryamkin-Larsen

Pedan/Biega

I can live with for a d group. Don't see where Sbisa or Hamhuis would fit.

Price aside, you gotta give credit to Benning for getting ahead of the rest of the league acquiring a D-man. This years free agency will be a feeding frenzy for a handful of good D-men.

Makes you wonder what they're thinking about Edler right now.

Also with McCann gone, does that mean the Canucks will re-sign Vey?

Not sure why this matters, we were going to qualify him regardless.  Why give players away for free when they could have a home

i hate when we lose good ,but slightly small forward's, i hate it even more when we had no one counter all those good ,slightly small forwards from being demolished . 1 less small forward to worry about 1 large D.man to take out some other teams good, slightly small forwards! or big forwards!

I think it's obvious Benning wants us to become what the Bruins were in 2011, which I do not have a problem with at all. I want to be the team that manhandles, not gets manhandled.

Exactly, for a while there I swear this was the softest team in the league.  Our rookies get mauled, top players get speed bagged, goalies get run at.  Benning is introducing some respectability.  It cost them 2 big gambles in McCann and a second rounder.

Hopefully the Canucks can find a way to resign Hamhuis and then trade Sbisa to make room for Hammer. Gudbranson is already a physical Dman and plus we already got Tryamkin and Pedan waiting in the wings, so that would make Sbisa expendable. We would need Hamhuis's veteran presence to help with the young defense!

See what Edmonton will give up for Sbisa

We certainly got tougher to play against with Tryamkin & Gudbranson, possibly Pedan!

Awesome!

Now lets see if Stecher, Larsen, Subban can bring some dangles, lead the rush, break down opposing D and jump into lanes? Add the offensive component we also need from our D! Or if we'll see another move before the year starts...

Cdc always has these weird fixations over our prospects which also get massively overrated. I liked Jared alot too but it's a bit premature to be declaring him a future top 6 like it's a guaranteed deal

And in the same sentence declare that Gubradsen will be no better than a bottom pairing D.

How in the world is this a good trade?

  1. Stay at home defender Erik Gudbranson's shots against impact comparable to Jared Cowen and Nate Guenin. He's not who you think he is.

And that's his supposed strength. His EV scoring rates are Adam McQuaid and Luca Sbisa. This is just lunacy.

Gudbranson's shot metrics are so piss poor. They suggest he is a terrible defender.

Yost is the guy that suggested a year ago that Weber (and by extension Josi) should play less because his Corsi is terrible.  He failed to understand that the other Ds on Nashville were only playing in the O-zone with the top-6 scoring lines while Josi/Weber took on all the defensive assignments with the 4th line.  It's a question of goal differential at the team level and not individual performance.

There is no question that Josi/Weber would do better than Ekholm/Ellis offensively but Ekholm/Ellis would be buried if they had to take the defensive responsibilities of Josi/Weber.  At the team level they have a better goal differential when their 1st pairing defends and the 2nd pairings goes on the offence.

Hard to know about Gudbranson's offence but his zone starts are only 43% (Ekblad is at 55%).  Benning talked of him being paired with Hutton so it will be interesting to see how he does in a somewhat more offensive usage - I expect Edler-Tanev to continue taking the tough D-assignments.

Sigh..benning must hate 2nd round picks.  Another lost trade for benning.  Wish someone would stop him from making trades.

And what will you say when we're in the playoffs and Florida's 33rd overall pick plays less than 100 games in the nhl in his career?

The reason Florida traded Gudbranson is because of the play of Matheson, so clearly they think this guy is or will be the better player, otherwise they could have just traded him no

I don't understand how either side is thinking at this point hahaha... haha. baha. wah

I don't know if they felt he was better than Gudbranson, but they felt their D coming up in McCoshen, and Matheson will give them options.

Anytime you can move a forward for a young right handed D, you do it.
