all i can say is could we not have kept our 2nd this year and sent them that conditional columbus 2nd round pick instead?

You seriously think Florida would go for that?

Canucks have been soft for years

This guy isn't soft

I like it!

I hear ya. But let's be honest here. Where does McCann fit in next year or the year after? He's not a 4C guy and we can't roll into next year expecting Tryamkin to play big minutes when he can barely breath after a 50 second shift. 6'5 dmen who have played over 4 seasons before his 25th birthday don't grow on trees.

“The way Michael Matheson played,” Rowe said, “really gave us more of a comfort level to do this. … We felt we had a little room to do this. But this was a very difficult decision. This wasn’t a quick decision. We talked about it internally for quite a while.”

Those of you who do not watch much Florida games. Gudbrandon is official our best defence man. Any if you who would rather keep McCann and a second round pick that are both unknowns are idiots. Benning killed with this one. Well done

I don't know much about him. Does he have much offence to him? or is he just really good defensively like Tanev.

I said about a week ago that I knew with some certainty that McCann would eventually be dealt... he just didn't have much of a spot on this roster going forward...

...but I meant like 2-3 years from now... you know... when we actually have AN IDEA of who he is as a player. This is a teenager who played in the NHL and actually looked okay at times. His value was next to nothing because nobody even knows what his ceiling is yet. He got his toes wet last year and looked promising along the way.

MAYBE Benning was right about Hunter Shinkaruk, but there is absolutely no way he knows something about Jared McCann that nobody else does... simply because it's way too early to say either way.

Sure he was undersized, out-muscled, etc. a lot of the time, but everybody knew it was because he was a teenager... not because he's never going to mature physically. I considered him an A- prospect, something that isn't exactly a hot commodity, but something worth investing in. We just traded him when his value was next to nothing, so of course we had to add a 2nd round draft pick to get it done!

The 2nd rounder bugs me. We were likely to take a Dman with 1st round talent who fell to 33rd. Gudbranson has incredible size and grit, something we weren't likely to get a 33rd, but we probably could have taken somebody with far better offensive capabilities.

Gudbranson is a good player to target. Fits the rebuild in terms of age, highly touted prospect in his year, we're desperate for big, strong Dman, etc. but this is not a package for a guy that has been teetering on 'bust' status. Why not pay up a little bit more and go for a really big fish? I mean, of course the guy helps out D corps! How could he not? But he is simply not good enough to warrant giving up on a skilled offensive player and a really good defensive prospect in that 2nd round pick. I'm happy to have Erik on the team, but I hope to god this is not Benning's big move of the summer, because Gudbranson is not the answer. He's not even going to leapfrog Hutton on our D corps. He's our 3-4C. I guess Hamhuis ain't coming back.

Players like this - 24 yr old, 20+ minute top 4 D that can handle the kind of hard minutes Gudbranson does - are bloody difficult to acquire in trades - let alone when you're not offering your best assets in return.

Benning did this without touching Horvat, Virtanen, Boeser, Demko, Hutton, Tryamkin....

This is a move you have to make, no matter how much you might like Jared McCann.  I happen to love McCann, but this doesn't hurt - because Gudbranson is going to combine with the likes of Tryamkin and Pedan and give this team a whole lot more heavy hockey than it's had in quite some time.

Jacob Markstrom for one just sent GMJB a bottle of nectar.

If I'm the Canucks, maybe now I consider moving Edler?

They can still fall back and re-sign Hamhuis. I don't think so personally > just asking the question...

They certainly need to replace the pick.  Maybe trade down and pick Logan Brown?

I love this trade other than the cap space were losing. It likely does not leave us with enough room to sign Stamkos. Yes i know i know it was unlikely but now we dont have a chance. Maybe we can move Edler and resign Hammer to save some space

Next year's forwards, even with McCann as an option:

Sedin - Sedin - Hansen

Baertschi - Horvat - Etem

Virtanen - Sutter - Rodin

Gaunce - Granlund - Dorsett

Burrows (McCann)

That's before signing a much needed UFA, from which we'll have the cash. Then you look at our future core of forwards with the 5th overall:

Tkachuk/Dubois, Horvat, Virtanen, Baertschi, Boeser - that would fill in most of the top 6, with Gaunce/Granlund/Etem in the bottom 6. There wasn't room for Jared, either in next year's lineup or in the future core.

McCann was pencilled in the lineup as per Benning.

btw WD has pretty much already said that Baertschi-Horvat is a thing of the past.  He prefers Horvat with defensive wingers.  Etem is being asked to change his game to be more physical - he is not a top-6 player but more seen as an energy player.

Very different player than Tanev, Not much offence, but plays a physical shutdown role.

Untapped offence ability. Always put in the role of defence responsibility and finished in the ozone. He is way better than Tanev and hits like a truck

A 24 year old 1st Round RD-man with over 300 games in the NHL. Ist d-an taken in the 2010 draft. Did I forget his size? Benning is changing the culture in Van and I'm lov'in it!

Does this mean that Hanson or Pedan are on the move?

Price aside, you gotta give credit to Benning for getting ahead of the rest of the league acquiring a D-man. This years free agency will be a feeding frenzy for a handful of good D-men.

Makes you wonder what they're thinking about Edler right now.

Honestly, I think this takes pressure off of Edler. He no longer needs to be top shutdown and 1st PK while trying to provide offence. Guddy would likely take more of those types of roles with Tanev allowing guys like Hutton and Edler to open the ice up more.
