“The way Michael Matheson played,” Rowe said, “really gave us more of a comfort level to do this. … We felt we had a little room to do this. But this was a very difficult decision. This wasn’t a quick decision. We talked about it internally for quite a while.”

Looking past that Ekblad is better > Florida had two similar guys in Ekblad and Petrovic.

Matheson, a 190 lb left handed PMD, will not be in any way used the same way, or in the same role as Gudbranson.  He's Campbell's replacement.  Although it does open a defensive roster spot. Florida just dealt from strength & got themselves some good young assets. To stay relevant over a period of time...

3-0 Sharks BTW

Not a bad trade after digesting it and I believe we will be getting a 2nd Rd pick thru trade here on draft day

dear lord I hope so. Elder should go to dallas, washington det or st louis for their 1st and a top prospect, draft one of macavoy, Johansen.

It's entirely unfair to paint it that simplistically. Of course you can look at what we might have had with those picks, but to be fair you should at least compare it with what we do have, as a result of trading them. Compare those names above to Baertschi and Gudbranson. I think some of those trades, at least partially, led us to Sutter as well.

When presented like that, which set of players would you pick? It's a no-brainer to me.

OK, just remind me how it is unfair to sit and wonder about the potential of drafting and building our future D core and wonder about the potential of those picks

But it is totally cool to sit and use the word potential for every other player/prospect or pick in the NHL not attached to the canucks name?

What? Garrison is crunching minutes on a team about to head to the SCF. We basically gave him up for free, and Benning has been trying to fill that hold ever since.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but Garrison had a ntc?

Jeepers, our defense has really gotten bigger awfully quick.

Hate to see Jared go, really enjoyed watching him this year. I admired his feisty; no back down attitude. But until he bulks up, I think he will have more success over there, than here.

I'm happy with the addition, Erik should help us quite a bit.

But my god... Benning sure isn't afraid to dish those 2nd round picks, just like the organization is afraid to deal with the Florida Panthers...

Garrison is a prototypical EC d-man who showed he couldn't handle the rigors of the WC, nothing wrong with that, some players do a lot better in one conference but not the other.

Pffft

He's gonna go for...a 2nd round pick salary retained, because CDC needs something to explode over pre draft

If you want to know why go read those garrison threads

Of course it's fair to wonder about "what might have been", I just think it's meaningless without some context (what we got instead of that particular potential).

I'm unclear on your second point, where exactly did I do that?

is it just me, or does every trade JB does result in me initially thinking it is horrible until i look at it more closely, and then i realize its actually ok if not good

His trades haven't been flashy, there is a strong emphasis on finding underappreciated gems with character to boot with his trade.

Thus they look better and better upon closer examination.

Garrison was, depending who you talk to, at best the equal of Edler & Hamhuis, or redundant because we had those two. I always felt Garrison was redundant, from the day he was signed.

The reality is he was traded because we acquired Sbisa at lower $'s in the Kesler trade. And used the money on Miller. Plus it was thought that Garrison while good, played less physical than Sbisa, 20lbs nearly his junior.  It was the start of attempts (hiccups obviously along the way with Bart & Weber) to become a much harder to play against back end.

I personally prefer Garrison to Sbisa, but that was the logic?

Also any predictions on how many times TL or JB refer to Erik as a foundational player in the upcoming interviews?

Linden's going to have to get Benning some coffee to try to sober him up a bit before letting him anywhere near a camera.

Sports writer Arthur Staple for the Islanders is quoted

"Gudbranson looks more and more like an analog D-man in a digital NHL world. Trade feels like a steal for FLA."

Not totally down on Gudbranson. Putting draft position/$ aside, he fit well w/ FLA as 3rd pair. He was weakest D on ice for FLA vs. #Isles.

Not so sure VAN gets better defensively. Can't have a top-4 defenseman who doesn't provide offense and skates poorly.

Finally ...  a D corps with purpose ... we are about to get defensively stalwart ... all we need is one more 'franchise' player ..  the Twins can play 3rd line minutes and PP at a reduced rate until they are 40 ... good to see old friends ...  I marvel at the 'woe-is-me' brigade ... how did they know Chicken Little shot right-handed? ...

People use the word potential around here in regards to every other teams' picks/prospects like they're all the next Lidstrom, Gretzky etc.

But then when speaking of an in organizational place people do not use the word potential but instead have this unfailing ability to downgrade the future abilities and potential of our prospects/picks etc.

It's almost amusing to see people hype up a 3rd round pick of another team while speaking ill of a 1st rounder of ours.
