Sports writer Arthur Staple for the Islanders is quoted

"Gudbranson looks more and more like an analog D-man in a digital NHL world. Trade feels like a steal for FLA."

Arthur Staple works in a digital media world.

Gudbranson plays in a world where big guys still plaster small guys against the boards. Its not digital. Its a physical game. No doubt he has some limitations.  We still need a team that can physically compete.

Funny reading fan reactions from some of the more active Hockey boards....

Florida fans are melting down

Flames fans think we traded Gretzky plus a second rounder who will turn out to be a Duncan Keith for basically Deryk Engelland (but those clowns will always mock what the Canucks do)

Canucks fans are on both sides of the fence.

People use the word potential around here in regards to every other teams' picks/prospects like they're all the next Lidstrom, Gretzky etc.

But then when speaking of an in organizational place people do not use the word potential but instead have this unfailing ability to downgrade the future abilities and potential of our prospects/picks etc.

It's almost amusing to see people hype up a 3rd round pick of another team while speaking ill of a 1st rounder of ours.

I don't disagree with you there, I think it's silly when people do that. Sometimes it goes the other way, certain people overvalue our picks or prospects. Either extreme is bad, so no argument from me on that one. I'll say that, in this particular case, I think Gudbranson fills a team need much more than McCaan, both now and down the road. The 2nd round pick, hard to say. But I trust that JB knew what he was giving up, having done his scouting.

I'm not convinced that the Canucks win this trade. Gudbranson is a decent dman. but what about his hockey iq? any good? or is he just big? what is his best skillset? how's he going to contribute to the Canucks besides standing up for teammates. cause that's an expensive acquisition for just someone standing up for someone else. a possible top six player in McCann and a 2nd rounder.

I saw the writing on the wall for McCann. Right now it would be him, Vey and Etem battling for a 4th line spot. Not to mention we will probably add at least 1 top 6 forward.

I do think we gave up too many picks because McCann has value. But to get a guy like Gudbranson you have to give. He has a good cap hit for the next year and will be an RFA after, so we won't lose him for nothing.

Does this mean we are drafting Tkachuk?

Or.. do we trade down a few spots and re-claim a pick we lost?

Apparently McCann bulked up a bit to around 194. That's from the 180 he started at. He could burn us, if he turns into a scorer - even then that's a few years down the road.

Florida fans have a right to be mad. Gudbranson was playing 26+ mins a night in the playoffs, and they essentially traded him for prospects and picks. He's a young guy to begin with, so it's tricky to justify from Florida's end. The fact that Benning could pull this off, given that he's acquiring a young defenseman off of a successful team is all the more impressive.

I know you say this a lot, but sometimes it's a good reminder to posters. Of course, not everyone does so, but some people definitely find the grass greener on the other side.

To be fair.... He was 19.

I think Mccann will be a good player. I also think it costs to acquire young defencemen.

a lot of 19 year olds have come through this org and didn't really do anything after signing-- and a lot of them were guys people here hyped to the moon. mccann is no different. if he does do well in, eventually, in florida, good for him, but that doesn't mean that he'd be able to compete in the western conference, he's no johnny gaudreau

So you can't win a Cup without a top 3 pick in your lineup. So Benning goes out and trades a 24 pick and a second rounder to get that top 3 pick and people are pissed about it???

JB traded a 24 pick and a second rounder for a player that was drafted top 3. Does this not resonate with some people??

Oh but he's a bust like Yakupov.  Yeah right. If you think that keep watching cartoons. This guy is a stud D who hasn't even hit his prime yet. In three years he will be special. He's also captain material, a real leader on and off the ice. The Canukcs D is gonna be nasty and scary, just the way JB wants it. Imagine Ferlund coming into our zone trying to charge Gudbranson or Tryamkin. Lol!!  That should be fun to watch. Imagine Gudbranson and Tryamkin on the ice killing penalties together. Imagine them on the ice together when LA or San Jose or Calgary or Anaheim try and get all tough with us. Let's see how tough Kesler and Getzlaf or even Lucic are with both Gud and Try out there.

Hey I like McCann, don't get me wrong. I thought for sure he would be in Utica next year and then the year after challenge for a spot. I think he could be a very good top 6 forward. But you gotta give to get. Defencemen drafted in the top 3 who are nasty like Gud don't grow on trees. Fans are gonna love this guy, especially when he sticks up for his teammates.

Gudbranson, Virtanen, Tryamkin, Pedan. Wow. The Sedins will have more room on the ice than ever before. This could extend their careers by a couple of years. There would have been no room for McCann, especially if Hank can play a few more years. With Gud and Try on the backend I'm thinking Hank's gonna wanna play a few more years in Vancouver.

And don't forget we are still gonna get a stud at pick 5 this year. If it's Dubois than holy man we are gonna be a big a$$ tough team to play against.  I like this trade. The second was necessary to do it. It wasn't gonna happen without JB throwing in the second. If you think we could have traded McCann straight up for a former top 3 pick than you're sadly overestimating what his value was on the open market.

I'm thinking JB isn't done yet. Remember we still have free agency. Maybe he still has a surprise or two up his sleeve. I'd love to get a top 6 RW who can play with the Sedins. If we can land Eriksson or Okposo in free agency then wow suddenly we are a playoff team that will be nasty to play against. And to those who think we are throwing the rebuild out the window Gudbranson is only 24. He's not even hit his prime yet. If anything we are speeding up the rebuild. Gudbranson fits in the same age class as Hutton and Tanev. And Tryamkin is only 21. We have a very young D but not too young. It's young enough to grow together but old enough to be in win mode now. I like it.

Like I said if we can pick up a top 6 RW I think we are set. Forget about the #1 PMD. That was never gonna happen. Not in this draft and not with trading McCann. For those of you who thought we could get a top pairing D with the second round pick give your head a shake. Even the D's going in the top 10 aren't considered #1 D's so finding one in the second round would have been impossible. I'm sure JB knew this as I'm sure he scouted them all.

Huh? More like hype up a #3 pick in the 1st round, for a 24th pick in our 1st round.
