[Trade] Canucks trade Jared McCann, 2nd-round pick, 4th-round pick to Panthers for Erik Gudbranson, 5th-round pick

Recommended Posts

Obviously,it was a shock to hear that McCann had been traded...I have no doubt that he will be an exceptional NHL player..I bet Benning was pretty squeamish about trading him...

The trade checks off a lot of boxes..the Canucks had a very soft D (vey noticeable after the departure of Bieksa)..with Sbisa,Tryamkin, Edler and now Gudbranson..It looks a bit more like a solidified Western Conference D.

The trade is a gamble,no doubt...and the price tag is big,but not surprising for a young, big Dman

I don't think this trade would have happened if they didn't know who they were going to pick in the draft..

JB was already on the radio saying they want EG to play with Hutton.  But time will tell I suppose.

I thought that would be obvious. It lets Hutton really push the play and lets Tryamkin break in right on the 3rd pairing.

So many 'chicken littles' on this board :D

I'm not convinced that the Canucks win this trade. Gudbranson is a decent dman. but what about his hockey iq? any good? or is he just big? what is his best skillset? how's he going to contribute to the Canucks besides standing up for teammates. cause that's an expensive acquisition for just someone standing up for someone else. a possible top six player in McCann and a 2nd rounder.

1 u17   2 u18   1wjc   1wc  apperances   drafted 3oa  how many other juniors in each year didn't make these teams?

Gotta give something to get something. Sad to see McCann go but EG is exactly what we were looking for. All of a sudden our D ain't to shabby

Elder - Tanev

Hutton - Gudbranson

Sbisa - Tryamkin

This is without Hamhuis too..

So we traded Hodgson, Mallet and Howden for a top 4 25 year old NHL D man

Provide me with evidence to suggest that he is anything more than a bottom pairing defender.

And lol, you do know Gudbranson's numbers got worse away from Campbell right?

I don't really trust the charts or numbers. We're from different schools of thought, clearly. I know that Erik gets the brunt of the defensive duties against top lines and am familiar with his style. IMO it suits our needs.

Shiny charts don't change the way I perceive hockey players with my gut, JB and other, more successful GM's have similar viewpoints. Maybe PHX hotshot GM will blow everybody out of the water with his stats, I'm not sold on the idea, nor will I ever be.

I know you say this a lot, but sometimes it's a good reminder to posters. Of course, not everyone does so, but some people definitely find the grass greener on the other side.

I only say it a lot because it's true.  One look in to the trade threads the last week shows that.

But then it could also show that we've a forum full of clairvoyants as everyone had McCaan going away for a 2nd or some such thing as well

Meh

How good is he right now? Is he a top 4? Maybe even top pairing? Could he possibly become a #1 or #2 in the future?

Gudbranson is currently a shut down Dman who can play the body but doesn't always take penalties.

He would be a perfect compliment to both Edler and Hutton. He is no doubt a top 4, drafted with the potential to be a top 2.

I doubt he will unseed Tanev but we desperately needed a guy on the right.

I think we could use one more RHD as a 6/7 guy to rotate with Tryamkin. Biega started off well but got stale as the season went on. He's a little too old to be a breakout now, and we have yet to see if Tryamkin's big body can handle a full season. Last season he was already getting his knees & ankles iced after games.

McCann simply didn't fit into our plans. He started ok but wore down, whereas Virtanen, Baertschi and Etem got better towards the end. We still have to sign Etem which I expect we will. Vey will most likely go.

I like Gudbranson's game a lot... Plus, this years 2nd would more than likely be a defenceman anyways, Gudbranson can help us immediately.

I know little of this fellow . Expound on why he'll help us imidiately. I like his hits stats.

How do people think this stacks up against the Erik Johnson trade?

The Blues sent Johnson (age 23), a first round pick, and McClement to the Avs for Shattenkirk, Stewart, and a 2nd.

20/20 hindsight, maybe even? The principles are still with their respective teams, the extra players have moved on, and maybe the picks have evened out.

Willie seems like he is a fan of this deal:

gubranson led the panthers in playoff minutes - averaged 26 min. I don't like giving up the 33rd pick - I mean I would have preferred something like Hansen and subban and 3rd for gubranson and to be honest I think that package helps florida way more than mccain and 2nd like how does this make florida better?

If Johansen is not available at 33rd then I am ok with this but I was really high on him. i would like to see a Hansen for a two 2nd or high 2nd and 3rd trade - if I was edmonton, I would be all over Hansen, they need a veteran 2 way player who does it all.

I dont believe Mccann was overrated and hate to lose him but you gotta give to get. This trade was what we needed. Big top 4 D man and former 3rd overall pick. I think this was a great and fair trade although I will miss Mccann.. his compete level will be missed
