[Trade] Canucks trade Jared McCann, 2nd-round pick, 4th-round pick to Panthers for Erik Gudbranson, 5th-round pick

Side note

Congrast to the San Jose Sharks on their 1st Stanley Cup Finals berth

Hoping the Bolts or Pens kick a hole in them, don\t want another team to win the cup that hasn't yet unless it's the Canucks doing it

Dumbest trade for panthers!

1st line centre Barkov

2nd line          Bjustad

3rd line          Trochek

4th line          Mccann/Mckenzie?

McCann can play wing.

Wow. I did not see this coming.

Initial thoughts: I like it. I think it's a fair trade. Gudbranson is exactly what we needed. Adds size, toughness, and depth for the D corp. It's an added bonus that he is right handed. Don't know why people are moaning about him being a defensive Dman. Every team that wants to be a contender has to have guys like Erik on their team.

With that said, I can't say I'm a huge fan of giving up the 2nd rounder in this year's draft. Now JB has to nail the pick, because a lot of good high potential players are going to be off the board by the next time he picks. I wish McCann the best, but he was so overrated on these boards.

How good is he right now? Is he a top 4? Maybe even top pairing? Could he possibly become a #1 or #2 in the future?

He was florida's no 3 d man this past year 4th most ice time on team in the regular season with just over 20 min per game. He led the team in ice time in the playoffs if that means anything

Not that upset with the price. McCann & a 2nd for a top 4 D man is a fair price. Swapping 4th and 5th round picks seems unnecessary. But whatever. Not like those will amount to anything most likely.

Think this guarantees Hamhuis is gone though. Gotta wonder about Sbisa too. Do Canucks really need Gudbranson, Tryamkin, Sbisa, AND Pedan? Probably not. Especially if they still plan to bring in Larsen.

Edler-Tanev

Hutton-Gudbranson

Tryamkin-Larsen

Pedan/Biega

I can live with for a d group. Don't see where Sbisa or Hamhuis would fit.

Yes, we do. The harder they cream the Oilers' and Flames' forwards the better.

But his defense isn't that great.

Have you seen him play? I doubt it.

This guy is exactly what this team needs. A responsible, defensive Dman who, unlike Tanev, can hit, and hit to hurt. Also unlike any Dman we currently have, he has a mean streak. West division forwards will have to keep their heads up for a change when they come to our rink. I'm smiling a mile wide thinking of Tryamkin and Gudbranson paired up together (though it might not be the ideal pairing).

Typical CDC, though. People crying for years about our soft D, and when we finally get the perfect guy to counteract that hole, it's "we gave up too much". Sure, we gave up potential. But Gudbranson is young, and will have a solid career for another decade. This isn't a "win now" trade, it's also a trade for our future.

Being able to draft a top 5 player at centre made McCann movable.

Even if we didn't win this trade, we made our team a lot better.

Kesler becomes Sbisa, Sutter, and Gudbranson.

Well, we gave up a few good picks too.

Just visited the Panthers forum. Pretty mixed feelings there as well. General consensus is that they won the deal though, even if it doesn't look like that right now. I think that the second was overkill TBH.

when will you people learn to stop overrating every single player that signs here XD mccann was brutal all year long. there was nothing special about his game at all, other than a bunch of you hoping and praying that he'd be a key piece to this team's success and made every excuse you could for something he did well enough that every other player in the league did

McCann never signed here. He was 19 last season and had 18 points in a limited role while also being scratched as part of the 'McPlan'.

"he did well enough that every other player in the league did"... please take your drunken ramblings back to White Noise.

You can never have too much depth.

The things I like about this trade are that:

1) McCann was not likely in the plans next year (or later....) - Sedin / Horvat / Sutter are here for at least 2 more years, likely on the scale of 5+ years (when the Sedins re-sign for another short-term contract). Where's McCann fit?

2) Many people in their Armchair GM'ing, including myself, were looking at UFA options (to re-sign Hamhuis or to go after other high-end Top-4 defensemen) that would have come in at 4.5+ million / year. This trade saves at least 1 million for other forward-related signings...

3) A defense is now shaping up to be very hard and physical to play against, with some of the younger guys being expected to fill an offense-role.

Next year:

Edler-Tanev [Some offense from Edler, little from Tanev --- Defense-first Pairing]

Hutton-Gudbranson [Lots of offense from Hutton; Gudbranson provides physical presence --- Mixed Pairing]

Sbisa-Tryamkin [Lots of Physical presence here; hopeful for offense from Tryamkin]

Extras:

7th - Larsen - Offense first, likely rotating in and out with Tryamkin

8th - Biega - Battles hard

9th - Pedan - Physical presence

Who knows, maybe the Canucks will still target another offense-minded defenseman, but I like how big and strong the backend is shaping up to be.

I agree.  Look what this does.

There are 3 D who are 215+.  1 on each pair.  And they all can play physically.

Benning can now feel free to add skill to the back end and not worry about his size and how he will fare against big western teams.

So whats the depth chart?

Edler Tanev

Hutton Gudbranson

Tryamkin Larsen

Sbisa? Pedan?

I guess ita also means Hamhuis is done?

I think we see a D-corps that looks more like this ^^^.  The back end suddenly looks solid and much harder to play against.  And, drafting a D is no longer such an urgent and vital priority.

Unfortunately, they lose McCann but to make a good trade, you have to give up something you like.  When you draft the BPA and he doesn't necessarily fit with your teams priorities, you can't be afraid to move someone later to pick up the assets that you need.  Good for Benning for making the tough but necessary trade.  Trader Jim is back.

Evaluate this trade on July 1 after most of the deals for next season have been done.  The whole is greater than the sum of it's parts.

Odds we get a defenseman as good as Gudbranson with the 2nd round pick are about 5-10%...

But continue overreacting...

Very well said, people shouldn't lose their minds over this trade!  The homer side of me will miss Mcann, was a big fan.  That being said my logical side sees the upside of adding Big E. To the mix.  You can't get proven NHL defencman for nothing especially young, big ones hence the 2nd to sweeten the pot.  Would have loved to keep that pick as we all would have but we will have to let time tell.  That's the beauty of this game... So many moving parts.

K that's my post for the month.. Gotta make hay while the sun shines,  hope this finds you all well :)
