So Benning goes out and trades a 24 pick and a second rounder to get that top 3 pick and people are pissed about it??? JB traded a 24 pick and a second rounder for a player that was drafted top 3. Does this not resonate with some people?? ... That's not wholly representative of the situation though. Sure, if we traded two actual picks (the 24th and the 33rd) to get back the 3rd overall I'd be ecstatic. But we didn't trade picks, we traded McCann for Gudbranson as the two main pieces. It should be obvious that McCann has already achieved more than what you'd expect from a late first round pick, and he has more value as a result. Similarly, Gudbranson hasn't quite hit the expectations of a 3rd overall - even if he's still a very solid player - so his value comes slightly lower. There's still a pretty hefty gulf between them and the deal is fair enough, but it's not some landslide like it would be for the actual picks. I know that Erik gets the brunt of the defensive duties against top lines and am familiar with his style. IMO it suits our needs. Shiny charts don't change the way I perceive hockey players with my gut, JB and other, more successful GM's have similar viewpoints. Maybe PHX hotshot GM will blow everybody out of the water with his stats, I'm not sold on the idea, nor will I ever be. You gotta think, when a Jack Adams nominated coach like Gallant puts this kid on the ice in the playoffs more than any other player on his defense, that stands up to any 'metrics' imo. But my initial reaction to this trade is: wtf jb. Wtf. That was my initial reaction as well, but my initial reactions are usually overreactions. McCann had no where to go on this team. It was only a matter of time until he was dealt since Hank, Sutter, Horvat, and Granlund all appeared to be ahead of him. The 2nd round pick, while valuable can be reacquired later (maybe Benning already has a trade). And in reality we would be very lucky to draft a player of Gudbranson's caliber in the 2nd round. It sucks that we lost the pieces that we did but McCann was originally an added 1st round pick and the 2nd will be added back from Columbus. So in a way we're not really ahead or behind in that regard. As long as Benning has a clear idea of the team he wants to build and is able to go out and get these players, I can get past giving up draft picks here and there. These are the kind of players you want with you in the trenches when you go to war. Have to agree. Like JB said, the price hurts but when was the last time the Canucks had a mean, huge D-man...now they have two (Tryamkin had Ana tip toeing into the off zone last year). Not even June and the D core is (all pretty big boys): Edler Tanev Hutton Gudbranson XXX Tryamkin Extras fighting for 6 and 7 - Larson, Sbisa, Pedan, Subban, Biega, FA Not bad, wish JB could somehow get Barrie or Vatanen as well

They are thinking of McCann for what he is. 19 years old. They are not pencilling a 19 year old automatically in to a line up. The deal for them is where he is at when he is 22 & 23... Same as he should have been for us. That's not a knock on him playing this year, just the overall outlook we should not have been counting on him as a difference maker at this point either? The trade checks off a lot of boxes..the Canucks had a very soft D (vey noticeable after the departure of Bieksa)..with Sbisa,Tryamkin, Edler and now Gudbranson..It looks a bit more like a solidified Western Conference D. The trade is a gamble,no doubt...and the price tag is big,but not surprising for a young, big Dman I don't think this trade would have happened if they didn't know who they were going to pick in the draft.. Good point. I also had a hard time seeing room for McCann even without a high pick in this draft. i have little knowledge of this new player but McCann is out ,done. Classy kid for thanking Vancouver for the oppertunity.
AFrame14
While Gubradson is what we needed and fills a top four role, benning once again gave up to much and added additional assets when it wasnt necessary. McCann and a 4th for him is prolly as far as I would of gone. This is just another example of poor asset management and it seems as if benning is making a habit of this. Only thing that can make up for it is his drafting ability as so far, his drafts have gone well.
The Great 8
Edler-Tanev Hutton-Gudbranson Tryamkin-Sbisa Biega Larsen Pedan looks like a tough defence to play against, lots of size which if we make the playoffs will be very important. Just look at Tampa's defence. Big strong guys who can skate and hit Hedman, Coburn, Gudas. Barring any injuries this team could make the playoffs and might be able to do something because of the defence and goaltending. I'm not sold on the forwards just yet as we need improvement from many players to score more consistently. He will be a good player but Gudbranson is a better player in a position that needed to be addressed by Jim Benning. Great hockey trade, neither team really wins or loses. Maybe slight edge to Vancouver as we got the best player in the deal.
thrago
With Tryamkin (sp?) Petan, Sbisa and Gudbranson even Edler thats a pretty big defense. We could be a real hard team to play against. All of those guys can take your head off. This team has gotten a whole lot bigger since Benning took over. I have felt for a long time that our team was too small which lead them to get worn down and injured. We need a couple top end offensive players and we might have a team on our hands in a few years. TheSnipeshow91
Very similar to the Griffin Reinhart trade. 16th OA (Barzal) + 33rd OA to NYI for a young top 4 shut down dman in Reinhart. McCann (24th OA) + 33rd OA for a similar player in Gudbranson. Late rnd picks are there to even the trade out. In my opinion, we did better than the Oilers because a RHD is harder to find nowadays. Gudbranson fits our youth movement as he is still only 24, only a year older than Hutton. At his peak he can possibly be a top pair shut down dman who can add 20-30 points from the blueline. Tanev 2.0 anyone?
