[Trade] Canucks trade Jared McCann, 2nd-round pick, 4th-round pick to Panthers for Erik Gudbranson, 5th-round pick

Recommended Posts

No matter how highly you rate McCann (and I do), this is a great deal for us.  Gudbranson really solidifies our D and will give it the L/R balance and complementary dynamics that have been missing for years.  Yes, Gudbranson isn't the whole package as a D.  He will never be a threat to rush the puck or be an offensive force.  But he gives us that crease-clearing toughness and defensive reliability with a decent first pass.  I like that he got huge minutes in Florida's playoff appearance this year and was touted as a future captain there.  There's still some unrealized upside to his game.  It's almost impossible to trade for this kind of  player.  The price was fair.  Even if McCann reaches his ceiling and makes this look like a bad deal in retrospect, this is the kind of chance a GM has to take, especially on a club like this.  I've hated some of Benning's deals, but not this one.

While Gubradson is what we needed and fills a top four role, benning once again gave up to much and added additional assets when it wasnt necessary. McCann and a 4th for him is prolly as far as I would of gone. This is just another example of poor asset management and it seems as if benning is making a habit of this. Only thing that can make up for it is his drafting ability as so far, his drafts have gone well.

GL finding a #3 pick 6'5ft 24yo Dman who is not only a veteran, but has spent all of his seasons playing top minutes - for a cheaper price than what we paid. I expect JB to work his magic and get back a 2nd round pick. Am hoping we trade down a few spots in the 1st round. We can still get our guy plus recover a pick or prospect.

When Garrison came over a few years back he spoke about how simplified Florida's D was. Gudbranson is a holdover from that system and was bypassed by Ekblad & Kulikov, with Mitchell getting PK time. That's why Gud is so highly valued but only got a 1yr extension. They want to see if he can up his game under the "new" system where FLA actually wins games.

I see him being put in a position to succeed here.

McCann and a 4th would not have got it done.

Do you think we were the only team in on him?

How does this post not have any likes before my own?

it's pretty clear Benning is building a tough team to play against. Sure, it sucks losing McCann because I think he has what it takes to be a difference maker in the right situation. Gudbranson brings what Sbisa does +++++. A hard hitting defenceman with a lot of untapped talent. He's 24 ffs.

I'm liking our blue line a whole lot more right now.

That was my initial reaction as well, but my initial reactions are usually overreactions.

McCann had no where to go on this team. It was only a matter of time until he was dealt since Hank, Sutter, Horvat, and Granlund all appeared to be ahead of him.

The 2nd round pick, while valuable can be reacquired later (maybe Benning already has a trade). And in reality we would be very lucky to draft a player of Gudbranson's caliber in the 2nd round.

It sucks that we lost the pieces that we did but McCann was originally an added 1st round pick and the 2nd will be added back from Columbus. So in a way we're not really ahead or behind in that regard.

As long as Benning has a clear idea of the team he wants to build and is able to go out and get these players, I can get past giving up draft picks here and there.

Exactly

in five

minutes I have become stoked.

ive been wanting this guy here for a couple years.

we now have a legit intimidating presence that can play

Amazing how people don't understand how trades work. It's called a "trade" for a reason. You give what you have surplus of, to get what you have need of. It's pretty simple.

Gudbranson is big and mean. I love this trade.

Canner was unlikely to ever play here as a center and as a winger both Virts and Boeser are ahead of him on the depth chart imo when speaking of younger wingers.  JB,  as strange as it sounds, actually traded from a position of slight strength and got back an asset this franchise doesn't have at any level.

McCann did ok for a 19 year old rookie but there were big stretches where he was invisible. He will be a good player but Gudbranson is a better player in a position that needed to be addressed by Jim Benning. Great hockey trade, neither team really wins or loses. Maybe slight edge to Vancouver as we got the best player in the deal.

Not everyone can be Dylan Larkin. We've learned over the years the importance of patience and allowing prospects to develop. McCann and Virtanen were victims of the system (too good for CHL, too young for AHL). A chance for McCann to bulk up over the summer and transition between NHL and AHL this season would have been much more informative of his future success than a rookie season that really shouldn't have been his rookie season.

Loving this trade! Good on JB to roll the dice! McCann though very talented was never gonna be our future #2 centre.... Gudbranson is basically a much younger, cheaper, much bigger & tougher + RH version of Hamhuis.... he still got upside and potential to get better!!!

So bye bye and thank you to Hammer.. and looks like we'll draft Dubois and hope he can help this team after Henrik retires.

Hey, maybe Benning can trade Hamhuis' rights and a 7th to Philly for a d-man prospect...

                                      regards,  G.

PS - nay, I'd actually like him to be re-signed.

Yeah - there's a guy who knows wtf he's talking about.

He played about a third of his minutes with EG - no doubt he knows what they gave up here.

We get a guy that can potentially change the culture of the team.  We are the team that gets speed bagged, we are the team that allows our rookies to get mugged, goalies to be run at, and are mocked.  This kid is exactly what they need, and he can play big minutes and be effective - its not like hes Engelland from the lames.

In exchange Florida gets TWO BIG GAMBLES  in McCann and the thirty third overall.  Gambles.

We have no more rookies to be protected. JB traded most of them.
