[Trade] Canucks trade Jared McCann, 2nd-round pick, 4th-round pick to Panthers for Erik Gudbranson, 5th-round pick

Gudbranson is currently a shut down Dman who can play the body but doesn't always take penalties.

He would be a perfect compliment to both Edler and Hutton. He is no doubt a top 4, drafted with the potential to be a top 2.

I doubt he will unseed Tanev but we desperately needed a guy on the right.

I think we could use one more RHD as a 6/7 guy to rotate with Tryamkin. Biega started off well but got stale as the season went on. He's a little too old to be a breakout now, and we have yet to see if Tryamkin's big body can handle a full season. Last season he was already getting his knees & ankles iced after games.

McCann simply didn't fit into our plans. He started ok but wore down, whereas Virtanen, Baertschi and Etem got better towards the end. We still have to sign Etem which I expect we will. Vey will most likely go.

Agreed except for Vey going:  this deal gives him renewed hope as the 13th forward.

We have the scariest D in the NHL without a doubt

Not even close.

Definitely happy with adding Try and Gud but we were by far the smallest and weakest up until that point.

We are probably in the top 10 now though.

McCann will be missed, but our team looks much more capable next year. Now we have the pieces to actually stop opposing teams from putting the puck in the net. If we end up getting Dubois as well, then I'm not too worried about the loss of McCann.

Also, people need to stop worrying about that second round pick. That is exactly why we signed Troy Stetcher. He gives us that flexibility. He's a much further developed prospect than pretty much any defensman at that time, barring something crazy, he's a hometown boy, an offensive PMD, and has experience being a top defensman on a championship team. If we had drafted a kid that has turned out to be Troy Stecher good in 3-4 years with our 2nd round pick, fans would be ecstatic and super hyped. Well, we signed him for free to give us flexibility at the draft. Now we can go ahead and pick Dubois, most likely and still have a solid D core.

Edler Tanev

Hutton Gudbranson

Sbisa Tryamkin

(Larsen?)

- With Subban, and Stecher, two right handed PMDs on the way.

When it comes to forwards, if we get Dubois in the draft then our future will still be pretty set. I think Benning wants to use that spot to hit free agency for an impact player as we wait a season or so for Dubois and everyone else to catch up. Keep in mind that even without McCann, we still have a solid number of forward prospects. Horvat, Virtanen, Boeser, and Baertschi all have top 6 potential. Granlund has a possibility, and if we get Dubois, well that's another. 4 or 5 solid top 6 prospects is honestly a good amount for a young future.

With Benning giving up picks, I think it shows, our prospect cupboard and youth movement is almost complete.

We have no more rookies to be protected. JB traded most of them.

Sometimes, I feel like my team has been hijacked by a bunch of nihilists. Perhaps some day in the future true fans will  rise again.

It's definitely harder to judge these trades from an outsiders perspective when you have followed guys like Shinkaruk and McCann since they were drafted.

I think that's the difference between people who can look at this trade with an even keel and those who can't. For me I remember watching these guys play all the way from junior, and rooted them on all the way to the NHL. As a fan it's hard to invest that much to see them continually dealt before they really get a chance to shine here.

Maybe i should just stop following our prospects so closely...

Or watch more of the rest of the league. I watched about 30 Florida games (loved their team) + playoffs this year. I am so stoked on this trade it isn't funny.

Between the Canucks 5th and 93rd picks - the Carolina Hurricanes will make 7 selections;

and the Leafs will make 6.

Seriously, does it matter?

A 2nd pick is an asset and it doesn't make any difference if you use it to make a draft selection or make a trade with it.  Just make it count.

The Canucks became a better team today and if it cost a 2nd, what are the chances that that 2nd turned into a better player than Gudbranson and how long would they have to wait?  EG is 24 and just rounding into form.

Benning got a good return for the 2nd and McCann (the Canucks have lots of centres, none of which project to be a 1C.....although I did hope McCann might)

Me watching the rest of the league won't change my attachment to our prospects.

I still believe McCann will be a good player in this league. That being said, if we draft Dubois with the 5th I'll probably get over it.

Thank you for that eloquent reply. So many people bent out of shape over losing the 2nd. Yes, it's a deep draft and yes it's likely that the 33rd ends up an NHLer. Equivalent to Gudbranson? We'll have to wait and see.

Tell me about it, I remember actually talking to HS in Brossard Quebec at the WJC summer development camp where he was cut. I still have a roster sheet with his signature on it.

having a guy like gudbranson allows us to give a guy like subban a look and protect his deficiencies.

you have to wonder.... benning and chiarelli are friends. mybe chiarelli was honest in saying he wants tkachuk if he keeps pick. At the lottery he had high rise for MT and said they need a cerebral net front guy like him and spoke of him ahead of others. Edm may be deciding between tkachuk and joelevi meaning we are looking at dubois which makes mccann even more expendable.

McCann>> Dubust.  This terrifies me if we not only don't get Tkachuk, we have to play against him in our division.

Or is it looking more and more like Lucic?

I don't know how much that improves their position in the standings but definitely harder to play against.

I agree about McCann. I like the kid too and think he'll be solid. Especially out east.  With Boeser, this years 5th and our centre depth he was expendable though. We just got a big, mean and solid d man who lets Hutton do his thing. This is a great deal.
