It's definitely harder to judge these trades from an outsiders perspective when you have followed guys like Shinkaruk and McCann since they were drafted.

I think that's the difference between people who can look at this trade with an even keel and those who can't. For me I remember watching these guys play all the way from junior, and rooted them on all the way to the NHL. As a fan it's hard to invest that much to see them continually dealt before they really get a chance to shine here.

Maybe i should just stop following our prospects so closely...

Understandable if a good fan has a lump in their throat when we lose a team mate?

From following CDC you are one of 8 or 10 very dedicated followers of our prospects, And I recall specifically yourself calling for patience with many guys; Shinkaruk & Schroeder specifically, but also McCann. That's a good outlook.

Its also possible to have a discerning eye, versus unabashed support, towards our prospects? There were reasons some guys look / looked like they might not make it. It's ok to have concerns as well. I was never surprised when Schroeder was let go, Shinkaruk traded at a loss in comparison to his hype when drafted.

Me watching the rest of the league won't change my attachment to our prospects.

I still believe McCann will be a good player in this league. That being said, if we draft Dubois with the 5th I'll probably get over it.

That said above > McCann was traded because he was valuable & looked like a great pick! Helped us get something of fairly substantial value.

I agree / believe in 3 years JM will be a wicked pick.

Its will be equally refreshing in a few years (fingers crossed) when we won't have to be trading our picks? Because we have a full cupboard of whet we need moving in...

This is a true "hockey trade" - quality for quality. I do think we came out on top - a big RHD, legit top 4 moving into his prime years? There are about 3 guys like that maybe as RFAs. I liked McCann but Gud is the rarer asset. Im actually surprised Florida did this deal.

You are a braindead clown.

I don't think I have ever seen a post get 5 rep in four minutes on this board before. I get the feeling a lot of people aren't thrilled with Desi.

Benning trades Forsling for Clendenning

Benning trades Shink for Granlund

Benning trades 2nd for Vey

Benning trades now McCann for Gubarson

see what is in common here, these are quick retool trades that are trying to stop the common sense (rebuild) which should be happening, instead Benning is gambling with the future to give veterans another go at the cup. Fire freaking Benning.

Gudbranson is a proven top 4 defenseman. I don't like the other trades either but why are you lumping this one with the others. I am not a fan of most of the moves Benning has made but this is the one trade I can say he won convincingly.

Basically the work of one scout as per Sportsnet:

At least a few NHL team scouts, especially those acquainted with the staff at CSS over the years, believe that Dubois's climb reflects a shift in power in the war room underwritten by the league. Danny Marr replaced the late E.J. Maguire in 2011 as CSS director and over the course of the years has shaped the outfit into his own.

A lot of veteran scouts have moved on, including the top man in each of the CHL regions: B.J. MacDonald in the West and Christian Bordeleau in Quebec both retired after decades with CSS, and Chris Edwards in Ontario left CSS to work with the overseers of the league's on-ice officials. In their absence David Gregory, who is based in New England, has asserted authority that none of the other top regional scouts had up until this season.

Said one NHL team scouting director: "Under E.J. [the CSS war room] was about consensus—building and sounding everyone out, giving everyone else a voice. Under Marr and Gregory it's very much top-down... they have strong opinions and expect [the rest of CSS staff] to fall in line."

Okay, it's somewhat speculative to say that Dubois was Gregory's guy, but scouts point to another player on CSS's final list as proof Gregory's outsize influence: UConn centre Tage Thompson at No. 20 among North American skaters.

A survey of five scouts came to a consensus opinion that Thompson is a late-second or third-round pick. "This is a guy Gregory would have seen a lot of and the cross-over [scouts] less so," one scout said. "Not that he's waving the pom-poms, but the fact is that if you see someone more than others do, you aren't dispassionate about it sometimes.

"You have to try to avoid that but the urge is to see stuff [through repeated viewing] that other people don't see on more limited views because it's really not there."

Maybe this is something of an awaited turn-about: Historically the belief under Maguire's stewardship was that NHL CSS under-scouted the QMJHL, that players in the 'Q' were less frequently viewed than those in the OHL and WHL. (NCAA players are in another category given fewer games played.)

Ten years ago, a QMJHL prospect might have 40 views from scouts compared to 60 or 70 in the other major-junior leagues. It's not clear how often Dubois or others in Quebec and New England were viewed but what matters most, it seems, was who was doing the viewing.

This is a very, very risky pick.

Pronman has him at #5 as well ahead of Tkachuk and Nylander. He is not risky at all.

McCann>> Dubust.  This terrifies me if we not only don't get Tkachuk, we have to play against him in our division.

I gotta disagree Heff.

Dubois is just as skilled and fast, plays a nhl style game and outproduced Mccann quite a bit in CHL draft year. There is a reason he is arguably 4th pick in many of GMs books in a deep draft.

I agree that playing against him will suck but its outta our control if he goes 4th which I believe will happen. But you win with Goaltending and defense, then the middle, then wingers.

Mccann is more likely to be a winger in the NHL. It suits his style, hes not suited for 3rd or 4th line centre but unfortunately is not big enough or strong enough for 1st or 2nd line, skilled enough probably. He doesnt win enough draws either. He will obviously improve but EG is needed much more. Would have loved to keep the 2nd though.

Demko Markstrom

Tanev, Gudbranson, Hutton, Tryamkin, Stetcher, Brisebois

Dubois Horvat Sutter

couple of seasons from now this could ve a very effective mix.

With Baertschi Virtanen Boeser Rodin Etem flanking its not bad at all.

Every one of those trades is a less proven asset for a more proven one.

Yes they were all gambles, but every trade is isn't it?

Agreed. Benning will add a couple more impact pieces before the start of next season, and the team will be a handful come puck drop in the fall.

Pedan (6-4), Tryamkin (6-7), Gudbranson (6-5), Markstrom (6-6), Sutter (6-3), Virtanen (stocky 6-1)...Lucic (6-3)?

A note about the departed 2nd round pick.

Trading away 2nd round picks is part of the reason why the Canucks have such a terrible 22-28 talent gap.  What is significantly different is Gillis and Nonis let go of those picks for players that hardly played 30 games in a Canucks uniform.  Benning is letting go of those picks for guys that will hopefully play 300+ games in a Canucks uniform.

To those who think VAN overpaid for Gudbranson -

EDM paid a 1st and a #33 (2nd) to NYI for Griffin Reinhart at draft last year.

True story.

Although they could probably afford to give up those assets more than us.
