Understandable if a good fan has a lump in their throat when we lose a team mate?

From following CDC you are one of 8 or 10 very dedicated followers of our prospects, And I recall specifically yourself calling for patience with many guys; Shinkaruk & Schroeder specifically, but also McCann. That's a good outlook.

Its also possible to have a discerning eye, versus unabashed support, towards our prospects? There were reasons some guys look / looked like they might not make it. It's ok to have concerns as well. I was never surprised when Schroeder was let go, Shinkaruk traded at a loss in comparison to his hype when drafted.

That said above > McCann was traded because he was valuable & looked like a great pick! Helped us get something of fairly substantial value.

I agree / believe in 3 years JM will be a wicked pick.

Its will be equally refreshing in a few years (fingers crossed) when we won't have to be trading our picks? Because we have a full cupboard of whet we need moving in...

i agree about deniro; he's a good poster.

your last paragraph hits on what jb clearly is doing - make 5 or so draft picks plus pick up older talent.  in effect, he's building the now and the future at the same time.  Not an easy task.

I'm honestly sort of OK with this trade as long as it doesn't lead to us wasting our pick as well.  At least Benning got a good player out of this deal which is better than can be expected of him at this point.

Ok. Maybe just desi is weeping hysterically.

Who am I kidding, he's ready to jump!

I think I'm good with this. Really would have preferred to make the 2nd, in 2017, but Gudbranson was 3rd overall in his draft year. He's a monster. We just got a lot harder to play against.

I don't think McCann is overrated, I think he needs some time in AHL to get stronger.

If you want top 4 D in this league, they don't come cheap. You either luck out on the draft and successfully develop them, usually over years, or you pony up and pay what's necessary to draft them. They don't come available very often in free agency.

Pedan, Tryamkin (6-7), Gudbranson (6-5), Markstrom (6-6), Sutter (6-3), Virtanen (stocky 6-1)...Lucic (6-3)?

Can you say slow lol freaking slow like turtles, good luck going against shifty skilled players who can care less about the size when they breeze right by you.

Benning is dreaming with his direction. Just go look at the Sharks at how fast they are, this model were developing will be a glorious model that is slow and stale, that will struggle to score goals because we are moving all our skill.

Every one of those trades is a less proven asset for a more proven one.

Yes they were all gambles, but every trade is isn't it?

Clendening, Granlund and Vey were all AHLers. Guds is a proven top 4 defenseman on a playoff team that was traded because the Panthers have D depth and have to consider cap management with a number of their young players up for contracts soon. I consider this situation a lot different than those other trades.

A note about the departed 2nd round pick.

Trading away 2nd round picks is part of the reason why the Canucks have such a terrible 22-28 talent gap.  What is significantly different is Gillis and Nonis let go of those picks for players that hardly played 30 games in a Canucks uniform.  Benning is letting go of those picks for guys that will hopefully play 300+ games in a Canucks uniform.

No, trading second round picks for rentals is why we lacked in the 22-28 age group for years every player we have traded a second round pick for since Benning took over has been for a player under 25 years old...

I agree with you here.  At least we got a useful player here; the question is whether or not we overpaid.  If Benning drafts a good player with his pick (anyone but Dubust or Nylander) and manages to get another top 60 pick, it's fine.

I liked McCann but Gud is the rarer asset. Im actually surprised Florida did this deal.

There good possibility that none of the picks pan out.

There's also a slight possibility that Canner doesn't really pan out, or at the very least the jury's still out.

There's every reason to believe that an already established young defenceman, who just led his team in minutes played by d in the playoffs just gets better and better as he enters his prime.

How easy is it to acquire younger skilled average sized forwards in this league?

How difficult is it to acquire young, established, hulking right handed defenceman?

Who really won this deal?

Or watch more of the rest of the league. I watched about 30 Florida games (loved their team) + playoffs this year. I am so stoked on this trade it isn't funny.

Of the games you watched, which side of the ice did Gudbranson play better on; left or right? I only caught 10-12 games (minus playoffs) and wasn't really paying attention to his position at the time.

I love the fact that he played with Mitchell the last few years, man, if he can develop into another D like him I'd be thrilled.

McCann is a good prospect who'll likely develop into a very good forward. However, you have to give to get. Gudbranson is a great pickup, but there was a heavy cost. Given the Canucks prospect pipeline they could afford to move McCann.

Fair post.

But...

Virtanen, Boeser, Horvat, Baertschi, Etem, Shinkaruk (Granlund), Gaunce were all guys who were first round picks. We're poised to take another forward? Honestly, at some point we were going to have to trade a young forward for a D if we don't have barely any history of drafting them.

It was inevitable.

No? What he said was basically what you said except it was worded differently.
