Granlund is relatively soft for a bottom six forward and not very productive either. It's guys like him that make teams like us suck. And again, McCann is only 19... He could easily develop in the AHL a couple years until the Sedins round out their career. Heck, an injury to Baer and we're all of a sudden weak on wingers.

On an unrelated note this this response, people need to stop mentioned Pedan and Tryamkin as the latest instalments to the big, bad Canucks. They may not even pan out.

Fillipula has worked pretty well in Tampa I would say.

I imagine they hope he takes a similar development path.

I wrote it terms of games not age.  Nevertheless, we agree...I think :P

I think we are on the same page I'm fine with us trading 2nd rounders as long as it is for players like Baertschi/Gudbranson as opposed to Weinrich/Smolinski :P

McCann had the it factor, we lost a serious skilled forward who we again never had patience for, just like Shink now McCAnn.

Dude - where was our next true top 4 D going to come from? We are not going to get one of the top UFAs, offer sheets are way more expensive than this move (although I do think Jones is worth it), and no D is in the top 5 of the draft.

You have to trade skill for skill. In this case we have Boeser coming up, and Benning isn't done yet. Geez the playoffs aren't even done yet and suddenly we have a legit D core.

a lot of 19 year olds have come through this org and didn't really do anything after signing-- and a lot of them were guys people here hyped to the moon. mccann is no different. if he does do well in, eventually, in florida, good for him, but that doesn't mean that he'd be able to compete in the western conference, he's no johnny gaudreau

Tell me about these 19 year olds?

McCann is 6'1.... Gaudreau is   5'9 that's a dumb comparison.

The funny thing is that most of the people that are bashing this trade are pro tankers.  They constantly state you can't win cups without a top 3 pick.  Well we just got one.  We trade a couple of late first round picks (33 is basically a 1st round) and everyone losses their minds.  Gudbranson is a heart and sole player who fits the teams current needs and future needs.  Tallon quoted him saying that Gudbranson is a future captain.

Gudbranson is like a young Willie Mitchell, but meaner.  A little like Travis Hamonic, but harder hitting.  People who are moaning about this trade have no clue how lucky we are to have acquired this guy.  Gudbranson, at 24, was already a leader on the Panther team.  He is the type of hockey player you'd want to go to war with on the ice.

He has had a few injuries and his penalty min. are fairly high, i guess that is from getting in the way of opposing forwards, doing his job.

this link has a lot of info. on him: http://www.litterboxcats.com/2014/5/14/5673842/erik-gudbranson-free-agent-florida-panthers-2014

He played a lot on the right side but defensively was effective every time he was on the ice pretty much. Just a force in front of the net and in the corners. Plus he's MEAN as I've said.

He is exactly what we need out there with Hutton for even strength minutes.

Yeah I always liked him, just couldn't recall if he was more effective on the left or right. It looks like his time was pretty well split between the 2 at 5 on 5, but he played more on the left on the PP (if can trust Dobber).

No matter how highly you rate McCann (and I do), this is a great deal for us.  Gudbranson really solidifies our D and will give it the L/R balance and complementary dynamics that have been missing for years.  Yes, Gudbranson isn't the whole package as a D.  He will never be a threat to rush the puck or be an offensive force.  But he gives us that crease-clearing toughness and defensive reliability with a decent first pass.  I like that he got huge minutes in Florida's playoff appearance this year and was touted as a future captain there.  There's still some unrealized upside to his game.  It's almost impossible to trade for this kind of  player.  The price was fair.  Even if McCann reaches his ceiling and makes this look like a bad deal in retrospect, this is the kind of chance a GM has to take, especially on a club like this.  I've hated some of Benning's deals, but not this one.

It will be interesting to hear what the non Canucks pundits will say about it. They were all blah blah blahing about how badly we "need a D man". As if we were the Oilers.

It is hilarious that we scooped a solid D man for a forward prospect. The Oilers cant seem to do it to save their lives. Fla must have contacted the Oilers before they went for this.
