What are we getting in Gudbranson?

The 3rd over all pick in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, Erik Gudbranson, is now 24.  A stay at home physical defenseman, Erik should fit right into the over sized Pacific Division.  His 6'5" 220lb frame will be a welcome addition to the Canucks' blue line. He has a big body, and is willing to punish his opponents for the TEAM.

Yeah, we gave up a mostly unknown in McCann for a former 3rd over all coming into his prime punisher.  With Henrik, Brandon, and Bo all ahead of him on the center depth charts, and coupled with his weak perimeter play when put on the wing, McCann was deemed expendable by Benning and his scouts.

Anyhow, back to Erik.  He was a beast in the playoffs for Florida this year.  I was constantly impressed with his ability to clear the front of the net and his board play.  Now that we have him, I have looked up some videos that I thought I would link for you, and, to start things off, here is what Willie Mitchell thinks:

WTF is right.

Yeah, he hits.

Yeah, he's so big he gets stuck in the glass.

YEAH, he will be awesome, look at him stand up for Ekblad.

There are a lot of fights on YouTube if you want to see more.  https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=erik+gudbranson&page=1

He is also well spoken.  And funny.  He is a real good Canadian kid!

We haven't had a player like this since Jovocop doled out justice on the blue line.

Be happy fans.  I am.

I didn't think trades could happen til the playoffs are done?? He's exactly the player we need, big mean and tough..hes obviously got some skill as well, former 3rd overall pick, and a RHD to boot..Way to go Nucks management! Now draft Thackuk or PLD, trade Edler for a first round pick or prospects etc, and sign a decent UFA or two and were competing this season, as long as the injury bug doesn't plague us as bad of course..

Can easily tell now that the Nucks are trying to be competitive again real soon, instead of waiting for 18-19 year olds to mature, as they're trying hard to acquire good players in the 22-25 year old range..

what we get in gudbrason is ,he make's, b.burns ,  j.thorton,  b.marchand,  micheal ferland and anyone else that taking liberties against us comes with some retaliation, thus freeing our players to focus on offence ,without worrying about "the no pushback game" we were playing ,which only invited the bs we had to endure in the first place!

I hate to compare Gudbranson to Bieksa, because for one they are different and Gudbranson is much bigger. But, Bieksa was in the same boat as Gudbranson, it wasnt until he was 25,26 that he started potting more goals and such. The thing that i am shaking my head at, is the fact people are only worrying about McCann's development and not about Gudbranson. The guy is 24 years old guys. A LOT more hockey development still for this guys career.

^Then can we stop talking about him? And quoting him as well? If he stops getting attention, maybe he'll go away.

I'll just add my first post from the trade thread:

Huh. Love to get Gudbranson, who's a tough, capable defender, but don't necessarily like to lose McCann. I don't like to lose the 2nd either, especially with it so close to a 1st, but it's not so much that was any kind of guarantee of a hot prospect. The 4th and a 5th are negligible, apart from being top of the 4th and closer to the bottom of the 5th which I don't like, but low percentage draft positions anyway.

You've got to give to get, and while I always like to give less (and have certainly questioned how much we've been giving in trades under Benning) I think this is a good move for our roster. I am surprised Florida would want another center though, perhaps they see him as a potential winger for now?

Now, for Gudbranson. I think he's peaked a little offensively, but he's still a big, strong defender. He can still contribute goals but isn't going to be super effective distributing the puck and could stand to make better decisions offensively. He'll play very physical though, and doesn't back down at all defensively. With him lessening the load for someone like Tryamkin, and certainly Sbisa, we'll have plenty of physical play available.

Gudbranson is on a one year deal (signed at the beginning of May, still an RFA after) so we've got flexibility going forward. Can I just say I hope we have a better contract guy working for us this coming season when the subject of his re-signing comes up.

I'm not sure what that means for someone like Pedan, who I think could use some more opportunity at the NHL level. He plays a similar version of the game to the three mentioned above, but this might push him down too far. I hope he gets some opportunity through injuries to show if he's ready to contribute even at a depth level. Biega, well, he's almost assuredly in Utica with Tanev, Gudbranson, Tryamkin and Larsen on the right side.

Hamhuis is another question. We have less space for him, especially if we want to keep Pedan and might consider Tryamkin back on the left as well. I wasn't sure we'd bring him back but didn't want to lose his leadership. The good news is apparently Gudbranson is a big locker room guy, so maybe that helps lessen the loss and he can help bring along some of our younger D (remembering he's only 24 himself).

And lastly, with the draft, I wonder how that affects Benning's decision making there. I wanted a D man even if it seemed likely we'd take Dubois. I certainly don't see us going after Chychrun now (although I didn't think he was the D Benning had referenced before anyway), and we probably don't look at a D that high any more at all. Dubious seems more certain in any case, unless he gets picked at 4th.

He can move the puck when starting the rush, but he doesn't make confident plays often enough when controlling the puck in the offensive end. He still has a shot, but needs to get himself in better positions offensively to take advantage of it. Defensively, he'll immediately be out most dynamic defender physically. Tryamkin is strong and manhandles players, and Sbisa hits fairly effectively, but Gudbranson has highlight reel hits. He's more ready to jump in to defend a team mate as well, and is very strong in his own end and in front of the net. He'll compete with Edler and Tanev for top minutes.

Given our teams lack of scoring ability, I could see people upset at first if he is not racking up some points. But that's not why he is here. He will solidify our second pairing by winning puck battles, clearing the front of the net, hits, getting the puck out of the zone quickly, lots of little things that makes the team successful. I didn't have a offensive role in Florida, they had other Dmen for that but he may get a chance here.

By the sounds of it, the dude is a leader. Which is great because we need new leaders in the room.

Another poster somewhere stated (paraphrasing) it's like getting a 24 year old Willie Mitchell with a higher ceiling.

I'd say that's a pretty spot on and how people aren't thrilled about that is boggling.
