Canucks defence moving forward/Tryamkin ?

I am curious to see how this Gudbranson trade affects our defensive side of things.
Will it mean Tryamkin gets bumped back to his natural left side ?
Does anyone know if Tryamkin is actually one of those rare defensemen who excels in his off side more than his natural one, or one of the 'prefers his natural side but competent on his off side as well' types ?

Because, our defensive pairing seem to be set for top-4, its going to be Edler-Tanev and Hutton-Gudbranson.
Who are going to be the third pairing ?
Is Tryamkin going to be contending with Biega for spot of 3rd Right side defenseman or will he compete with Sbisa/Hamhuis for spot of 3rd lefty ?

Edler-Tanev

Sbisa-Gudbranson

Hutton-Tryamkin

Pedan

Larsen

Sbisa-Gudbranson brings a similar mix that Mitchell-Bieksa did, with more size.  Sbisa really needs a defensive defenseman as a partner and we haven't been able to provide one that didn't lead to other issues in our pairings.  Hamhuis didn't work due to them both being left-handed and unable to play on the wrong side.  We have enough depth now that even if we have a couple of injuries, Sbisa isn't going to be playing excessive minutes against top line players, and will have a more clearly defined role.

If Sbisa gets to play with Gudbranson, he'll be the most improved Canuck next season.

I believe Edler's on the market

Another one of these threads?

Trymakin will fill in whatever is left over by the end of the offseason... I'm getting the impression that Benning isn't even close to being done moving players, so things can and will change.

But do you know if Tryamkin actually has experience playing the left side ? To my knowledge, he also played right side for his Russian club.

No idea to be honest. I'd expect him to play right side again next year, but you never know. I'm sure Willie will try him out in both positions.

Nope but I'd be surprised if Sbisa is still here in September. The experiment with Sbisa has come to an end ...maybe we get a 2nd round pick for him

Sbisa will be fine with fewer, easier minutes and a defined role instead of rotating AHLers as his partner.  He was set up to fail last year and could give us a big, punishing pairing if paired with Gudbranson.

You're right about Sbisa.  But the way I see the D-pairs next season, there will be one offense oriented D together with a defense oriented D.  Sbisa can skate the puck out of the zone but he's really not much of a point producer.

Defensive D:  Tanev, Gudbranson, Tryamkin, Pedan

Offensive D:  Edler, Hutton, Larsen

All pairs are harder to play against and more physical and are not wanting for size.

Well at some stage of a career players move from getting help from others to become a vet themselves. Sbisa was at that point IMO

He hasn't played that many games for us now.  We all need to take a wait and see with him.

Throw in the fact Benning could or could not re-sign Hammer......same with Bart and Weber technically (but both are gone)

Maybe a UFA, maybe more depth signings.  Trying to figure out the Canucks top 4 d-pairings to start the season is basically like calling the Pick 6 at the racetrack.  For Tryamkin in particular, I think most of it depends on what his does this summer.

He needs to get into better shape to play consistent top 4 minutes.  Otherwise he will play bottom pair, rotating in and out

I don't even think Sbisa failed really. I thought he played well last season. Things got really bad when he got injured, not having him in the line up was very noticeable.

He was pretty OK when he had NHL partners.  Anyone trying to babysit Weber is going to look bad.

Edler( Defensive but with O upside) -Tanev (defensive puck moving dman)

Hutton (offensive puck moving dman) -Gudi( defensive dman with O upside)

Tryamkin ( Defensive stay at home dman) -Sbisa ( defensive and offensive upside - biggest issue is consistency and decision making)

Stetcher ( offensive skating dman With upside in both zones) -Larsen ( offensive smooth skating dman with offensive upside)

Pedan ( stay at home dman)-Biega (puck moving dman)

You need all sorts to be successful in this league

Shows how weak and soft our D was last year when people think Sbisa is a decent player. I agree he did improve over the previous season, but there is nothing there to show that he is more than a depth defenceman.

The guy cannot handle the puck, and takes about 2 minutes behind the net to make a decision, which often ends up being a poorly timed pass or a dead giveaway.

So he is physical? That calgary series exposed him, he does not intimidate anyone, and under pressure with the puck he made horrible decisions.

The quicker we move on from guys like Sbisa playing big minutes the better.

Obviously nothing is written in stone, but JBs already stated for the record that they specifically want EG paired with Hutton.

I see at least one of Edler/Sbisa being shipped out for some cap room and/or some more scoring to replace what Vrby brought to the rink two years ago.

I'm aware of the plan but I think this lineup has a better chance of being successful.  One of the great things about our D going forward is how much flexibility we have regarding pairings.  Losing one guy to an injury won't mean that his partner is suddenly useless as well.  We'll be able to exploit matchups better and adapt to different situations.
