He wasn’t one of Team Europe’s first five defencemen choices for their World Cup of Hockey roster.

But on Friday, Canucks defenceman Luca Sbisa was named to the squad, joining former Canuck Christian Ehrhoff as late entries for the team comprised of European players who were born in countries other than the Czech Republic, Finland, Russia and Sweden.

Sbisa, a native of Switzerland, has two years left on a deal that has a cap hit of $3.6 million. He represented Switzerland at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

He joins Denmark’s Jannik Hansen, his Canucks teammate, on the Europe team that opens play against Team USA in the tournament’s first game on Sept. 17.

Hansen is one of four Canucks who were previously named to World Cup teams. The others are Daniel and Henrik Sedin and goalie Jacob Markstrom (Team Sweden).

You can add Luca Sbisa to the list of Canucks taking part in the 2016 World Cup of Hockey.

The 26-year-old defenceman was named to Team Europe Friday, when the eight teams competing in the World Cup of Hockey announced their final roster selections.

Sbisa has represented Switzerland on the international stage in a number of tournaments, including the Winter Olympic Games in 2010, as well as the IIHF World Junior Championships in 2008 and 2010.

Joining Sbisa on Team Europe is Jannik Hansen, who has represented Denmark 13 times internationally since 2002, most recently at the 2016 IIHF World Championship in Russia.

Congrats Sbisa. Best of luck on Team Europe with Hansen

That's good news for him and the team. This experience will showcase Sbisa in a well televised, international competition.

which might not be good news for the Canucks if they are looking to trade Sbisa...

Wow dont expect too much from team europe with Sbisa, ehroff and Streit (plus a declining chara) on defence, that team is going to get torched.

World cup is a joke anyways, just a gimmick, I doubt guys will really care that much about it, not like the olympics or world championships.

Lol, 3 trade Sbisa threads in a day, then a sign of positivity that he made Team Euro only to get dumped on. Come on guys, this is a positive. Well done Sbisa, hope you do well at the World Cup.

Let's view this as league recognition of his ability. Who knows, maybe next year will be a stark improvement.

This team is gonna suck major ass and have chemistry issues. Wouldn't surpirse me if they finished dead last behind the under 23 team North America and every other country in the tournament.

Whose anthem do they play when/if they win a game in the round robin?

This tournament is a joke an NHL creation just like the world baseball classic or if the NBA made their own world cup and dropped out of the Olympics.

The only true World event are ones that are internationally sanctioned by world sport federations.

This tournament will be a step down from the Olympics and a slight step up perhaps from the world championships since it is on NHL ice instead of big international ice.

I wouldn't crap on him nearly as much if he was signed to a 2mill contract...
