Where would these guys go in the draft this year?

With all the talk about giving up draft picks I wondered where people might think the following players would be drafted this year. Benning has added to the team through free agency but but everyone is still upset that he gave up some draft picks.

Garteig

Laplante

Nilsson

Stecher

I think Stecher in particular would go pretty high?

Garteig - Will not be drafted

LaPlante - Will not be drafted

Nilsson - Will not be drafted

Stecher - Will not be drafted

I get the hypothetical situation you're making. But 2 of those 4 went through the draft 2 or 3 times and had ZERO takers. So if we assumed this was their draft eligible year and not the ones already past, Stecher probably goes in the 3rd. Gartieg in the 4th. Laplante and Nilson late or not at all.

It's kind of a silly question, since it sounds like you're saying if these guys were performing like they are now but still 18 year olds eligible for the draft, where would they go? That's a poor way to look at it since they aren't 18 anymore, and it was only after years of development that they've gotten to where they are.

They'd still be undrafted (or drafted but unsigned and become free agents).

I realize that it is completely hypothetical, but they are all young prospects that we added to the team.

Everybody on these pages is always so excited about draft picks that will likely never pan out.

I was just contemplating whether people think that Stecher would make up for that 2nd round pick.  Or maybe Garteig makes up for the 4th?

Just a question

Yea this is a bad question, especially with the college prospects.

If Stecher was 18 with 3 years of NCAA experience he would be a top 5 pick.

I am just speaking straight up about their level of talent and their chances of being nhl players.  I don't think it is that hard to imagine.  A prospect is a prospect.  Some take longer than other

Sorry about the others, it's hard for them to comprehend an easy hypothetical question. I've answered it though without any hesitation.

Unlike others, I do think they equal draft picks. Teams missed out on some potential with these young players. The question should have been will any of them have a chance, in a couple years, to make the team and on what line or pairing.

Well if we're basing this off of their current skill, and assuming each player is 18...

Laplante was a 3rd round pick, and though he hasn't progressed a lot he hasn't gotten worse.  So I'd reckon he'd be a 2nd or 3rd round pick.

Nilsson was a 4th round pick.  Much like Laplante he hasn't really progressed as hoped, but certainly has gotten better since he was drafted.  He'd probably be a 3rd round pick.

Stretcher was one of the top NCAA defenceman last year.  If he was that good when he was a draft eligible 18 year old, he probably would have been a 2nd round pick (some drop due to his size).

Garteig, like Stretcher, was one of the top players at his position in the NCAA.  If he was an 18 year old who was already one of the best goalies in the NCAA, he would probably have been a 2nd or 3rd round pick.

If we are basing this off the players as they are now (age included) and we were to try to trade any of these players for draft picks in this years draft, the only guy I could see being worth anything is Stretcher.  Maybe a 4th round pick at best.

That is the best answer, even better than mine.

I feel like getting Stecher was was as good as our pick 33.....almost  :)

If you were to base the likelihood of these guys playing 100 games at the NHL level,  and how that would translate into draft position,  you are asking a very valid question.

I think Stecher is the best bet,  and would put him at a late 2nd to mid 3rd.  Garteig would probably be a late 3 to late 4.  The other two are lottery tickets and would be 6 or 7 rounders.

This is my guess,  what do you think?

I'm surprised with the amount of grief op took for this thread.... I feel like people overlooked the obvious point he was asking, just for something to criticize. Based of skill and potential, if they were 18 now I say

Stretcher- 2nd or 3rd

Garteig- 3rd maybe 4th

Laplante-4th or 5th

Nilsson- 7th, possibly a 6th

Drake Caggulia would be a high 2nd

The hypothetical situation is not completely clear to me. I am going to assume that these guys all get placed in the draft at their current ages, and everyone knows what age they are. The get put in with all the guys who are actually in the draft this year.

I think Stecher goes in the 3rd round. That is the right place for a guy who has a decent shot at being an NHL regular, but less than 50%. If he was bigger he go in maybe the low second round.

I think Garteig would so somewhere in rounds 5 to 7.

The others guys would be undrafted. They look like minor league players will only a very small chance of ever seeing action in the NHL.

None of these guys is close to being a substitute for the #33 pick the Canucks just gave up.
