I am like most of the experts on here. I put BS out and get BS back. :) My claim is I think Baer is done.

50/ 50 that you're correct. I think this is one that needs to be addressed next training camp at the earliest. There are a handful of NHLers playing today that have had somewhat parallel concussion ( /neck ) issues. Skinner in Buffalo, iirc, was one concussion away from ending his career.

Sven will be back next season.   I am not a doctor but have had close to 6 concussions.  Not all were caused by blows to the head.   In Sven's case I was a little suspicious that after having a major one last year he comes back and then gets another this year and then after a short break comes back.   At the time, last month, I didn't think he was ready, I wonder why doctors did.  In my case I got a bad one playing rugby, and then came back too soon and then got a couple in a row that were almost caused by little knocks.   After that I took a year off from playing and came back and played another 6 years with no problems except one very minor one.  Who knows but I find the timeline that the NHL uses is still quite quick than what I experienced.  As I said I didn't understand how Sven could comeback that quick and I ended up being correct.     I would wonder if even starting next season in october if that might not be too quick.

Yes....you are not a Doctor.  Even a concussion specialist can’t give a timeline.  Every brain injury is different .  I have had 4 major concussions.  Spent 6 weeks downtown in Vancouver at a clinic Worksafe sent me to in 2008.  I was unable to go back to work .  Still can’t go up a ladder ... driving at night is almost impossible if there are a lot of cars on the road.  I had another after my injury at work and lost my balance and fell head first down some stairs and hit my head.  Anyone giving a timeline is uninformed.  There is no timeline.

Yes, there is no timeline.  I didn't suggest that so you have misread/misunderstood.  Tell me exactly where I gave a specific timeline?  What I did say and I doubt few doctors would disagree, is that substantial time is often needed for people who have received multiple concussions in a relatively short period of time.  In Sven's case he had a significant one last year and then had another one this year and in a relatively short time (2 months) he came back and played a number games before getting the symptoms again.  Now, considering his history 2 months seems kind of short and again I don't think many doctors would disagree.    He is not the first case of someone having this problem.   There may be no timeline, but there is substantial evidence of players coming back too quickly or getting trapped in a circle of not getting over their concussions.  No timeline but a definite pattern!

No I didn't mean it that way we just misunderstood each other.   I have probably had 6 or so concussions.  Three serious ones in a span of about 5 years.  Slipped in the shower and fell out of the tub and hit my head on the toilet.  I am lucky it didn't kill me I think.  I saw a concussion specialist at Victoria hospital who said the more you have the longer it can take to recover.  Also age plays a big part of  recovery.  I would not wish a serious concussion on anyone....I know you will agree since you have experienced them also.  I consider myself lucky as at the clinic in Vancouver there were people that could not remember what happened the day before.  My worst times were probably the 1st month after …..laying in a dark room because light bothered me....unable to watch a whole movie at one time.  I would walk down a hill and stagger and it would look like I was drunk.  Not fun.  I hope he can come back next year at full health.  There is no reason to rush especially now that the playoffs are a pipe dream.

Heres hoping you get better bud. I think for me, If i was ever in the NHL, 3 concussions, im done. Don't even want to bother with it. I know the lure of playing the game is nice but trying to remember your kids names or not knowing where you live is pretty scary think about. No amount of money is worth losing that much brain function. I hope Sven gets well but man, recently married with a kid on the way, thats going to be tough decision if his post concussion stuff lingers

Just by way off encouragement, I have had multiple concussions and my doctors have told me that I will battle with symptoms for the rest of my life.  I also have Multiple Sclerosis and have had a few falls that have exacerbated the problems as well.  Be encouraged and just to what you can and find fulfillment in it.  Setting us straight here on CDB is good for the rest of us.  Blessings. :)

Good wishes to you also.  I am as good now as I am going to get.  I have made peace with that.   I am better off than a lot of people though.  I am more worried about it becoming a real problem in 10 years or so and losing my memory and ability to function.  No way of saying if that will happen but its always in the back of my mind especially since I am up there in years already.

This is why I'm retiring in 4 years max.

Give him a few full practices but maybe we'll see Baertschi to close out the season. :towel:

I really hope for his sake we don't see Baertschi.  These games mean nothing and it's six months until the next pre-season starts.  That time could be the difference between a career and no career.

I get the concern, but the panic about this is so over the top.

I think it's at an okay level, I think it's good that we as fans have become more aware/understanding of how injuries that could damage a player's life not just during but also after hockey.

Agreed. If we were in any sort of position to make the post season, this could be debated. We're totally out of it. Kill two birds with one stone, let Baertschi go into an extended off season, try out a couple of 'shiny new toys' and as a bonus, maybe drop a position in the turtle derby ( aka better draft position ).

He still has no return time table, cleared for contact an practicing with the team.

At the end of the day regardless of playoff picture or not it is up to Baertschi if he wants to play this year or not. If he wants to play and is clear to do so it is 100% his call.

I understand his input would be paramount, but I'd include his wife in any conversation and stress how meaningless these last few games are. I suffered one concussion ( known ) during a rugby match. Hospital for three days, but never ever back to 100%. If you can be overly cautious, why not ?
