Brendan Gaunce | C/LW

I'd rather a journeyman with a cup ring than a rookie with no experience. As mentioned before Gaunce moved to LW and Cassels might get a chance but It's hard to imagine him sticking. I want a guy like Gaustad who you can put in the game anytime and be confident with.

That argument can be made for any position and every roster spot. The team went far too long without cycling in younger players. No more temp veteran placeholders, it's time to catch up and get going on the refurbishment.

Exactly, can't see us going after many free agents this summer. Might try and pull in one if there's someone to fill a specific role, but I think we will see Benning keep pushing and finding kids who are ready to step in and compete.

Yeah at some point you have to accept some growing pains. They've already said -- if a young player is showing himself able to do the job of a vet, then they will make a roster spot. Nobody is ever expecting a rookie to come in with the same savvy of a veteran, so that's a red herring argument.

Gaunce → After 15 playoff games: 4 g, 5a, 9pts, +4, 8 pim.

He's looking very, very good for a 20-year old AHL rookie.

Love that Gaunce is a solid playoff performer. You can never have enough of these kinds of players and right now, they are coming in bunches in the club's prospect pool.

Green likes 4 solid lines and he must be tempted to move Gaunce up with Baer or OReilly, but he really carries the line he is on (which was +2 tonight), plays on PK and PP, and been the best most consistent player for the Comets against the Griffins. To think he sat as a healthy scratch in the first round.

I was impressed with Brendan Gaunce when Mike Gillis drafted him and everything he has done since that time has only made him a better, more reliable player. He has been among the best players on the ice in games that really mattered in these playoffs and has a respectable 4 goals and 9 points. He seems to be a coachable kid with a serious work ethic. It would be great if he got a few games in October to see if he can deliver 9 to 12 minutes of fourth line duty. What Is clear is that all of the young Canucks' prospects are gaining late playoff experience, and that can only be good for their development.

He's really pushing for a 4th line spot, as is Grenier. I think Kenins should be worried.

Agreed, especially since Kenins can still go down without waivers. I wouldn't be at all surprised if the 2 of them split time at 4LW with the big club next year. Grenier is great, but facing a bit more congested depth chart on RW.

Hansen and Dorsett can both play LW if Grenier is the best option of those three.

I'm excited to see this:

Baertschi Horvat Virtanen

Shink? McCann Kassian?

HS/BG Cassels Kenins?

x BG x

Lol cute....if only every single prospect became the players they are supposed to be...the cup is ours!

Could happen from an asset management point of view also, since Grenier has to go through waivers whereas Kenins and Gaunce don't. Gives us time to see whether Grenier can cut it on the big club with the other two waiting in the wings if he can't. Good situation.

I think Sutter caused a setback in Gaunce's development when he cut Gaunce from Team Canada and said he would never be more than a bottom 6 center in the NHL.

It seemed to dampen his confidence and slow his development. (Never liked those damn Sutters - even when we had one.)

Gauncer is a leader and a dominant player when the chips are down and Team Canada would have found him to be a very useful and reliable player.

Green has brought Gaunce back from this interference, now he is an integral part of the Comets and delivering splendid play and clutch goals.

His defense is outstanding, his skating is much improved, he is covering a lot of ice with his size and reach.

He leads by example, and that is set with a calm, thoughtful persona off the ice and a steely determination on the ice.

He cares about the team, his teammates, and everybody reaching their goals (e.g. Tryamkin and the Grouse Grind).

Gaunce is ready, imo, and going to get a chance to start on the 4th line once the dust settles after training camp.

I can see him establishing himself and then moving up the roster as he proves his worth.
