Eriksson has a NMC, which means he has to be protected.

When you read those boxscores, have a look to see how much ice time Gaunce gets.

For the skimpy amount of time he gets, he's been playing a solid defensive game.  He's projected to be a bottom 6 player and is in his rookie season.  Before you suggest Megna & Chaput...they are 2 & 4yrs older than Gaunce.  How 'bout some patience?

If signing Errikson costs us a prospect like Gaunce, that's just another nail in the concept of us rebuilding, isn't it?

No really.  Even if Eriksson weren't signed, I highly doubt Gaunce would be protected over Baer, Granny or (possibly) Rodin.

He's getting a real opportunity here to show what he can do, can't ask for more than that. Maybe he'll erase the donut soon, we'll see.

After about 3 or 4 years (maybe even 5) I remember the Sedins suddenly finding another gear.  Suddenly they went from future stars with potential to actual stars scoring in the top 10.  Gaunce just needs that little extra acceleration: good for the fore-check, good for the break to open ice for a pass.  His thinking game looks good, and he plays the only heavy game on the Canucks, other than Virtanen (and his is inconsistent, as we all know.)

If he finds that gear, we have our other centre to complement Horvat.

He should go for a twirl down in Utica for a couple games and remember what it is like to score again. He has become used to taking the puck to the end boards and pinning it there until someone comes and picks it out of his skates. He has better offensive instincts than that and he needs to realize that it's ok to be a little creative and try to score, even if it's on the 4th line in the NHL.

I'd be fine with sending him down to get more minutes and as you say, play a larger role. Honestly, Chaput could largely do what he's doing at this level but he's not performing poorly, he just doesn't need to be up here either.

Gaunce is doing just fine. He's a future bottom 6 C, maybe bottom 9 W in his first year at this level.

I'm not sure what people were expecting him to come in and do? Put up 40+ points or something?

Well of course the expectation was a 40 point rookie season! Isn't that why we invested 2 years in Utica on this guy? To clarify this is all sarcasm. My only critic on Gaunce's year to date is that is TOI should be 10 minutes minimum and he could be a tad more physical.

Pretty sure Eriksson has a NMC.

I thought it was a modified NMC or NTC? Lemme look it up.

Ah, I see now. NMC for first two years, NTC for next two and modified NTC for the last two. So yeah, NMC for now.

Looking at the list right now it seems obvious that Erikson should be left unprotected,

It seems he will have an average season, not one even close to worth the contract though,

If they leave him unprotected they can keep another forward, if he's taken they are rid of the contract, if he isn't then fine, moving right along

That was a golden parachute deal from J.B to L.E and everyone knows it so it won't make Vancouver look bad to potential free agents, Erickson was blessed to get the contract and I doubt he would be peeved much by having to take his millions of dollars to Vegas for a 6-year vacation.

He's the solution to keeping Gaunce

Whether Gaunce is worth keeping is another topic altogether, the thing that concerns me about him is that games go by, then I'll read a boxscore, see his name and say" "Was he in the line-up?"

Gaunce is one of the most invisible players I have ever tried to watch

If Eriksson would waive his NMC for a move or for expansion, that would be a way out a bad signing... Now I said it.  I was on board, but if JB can find a way out without giving up any other assests, then have at hoss.

Ot it would be nice to get a pick or prospect for Eriksson, but I would honestly trade him for future considerations to the right team.

Contrary to thought on here recently Ericksson will have value in 3 years still. It is the Twins who will have not so much in fact I suspect they are done by then. Benning goes on record as saying he will not ask for players to waive their NTC. If another GM calls with an inquiry does that mean Jimmy does not inform the player and his Agent about the interest. It is a small hockey world and you bet that options are discussed.

I am very disappointed that Gaunce was scratched for the second straight game.  This is his first year, and he earned his spot through camp. While he hasn't put up the points, I don't think that is the right gauge for him in his 1st year as a 4th line centre.  He has played well generally, and been responsible defensively.  What can he do with only getting 5/6 minutes a night?

Right now we are playing Skille, Chapat, and Megan in front of him.  Even if you say these three have played better than him, it is not by a wide margin.  I don't see any of the three of these players being a long term solution to the team, they are AHL call ups that have had much more time to prove their worth, . . . and haven't.  Gaunce is younger, has a very high hockey IQ, and is very coachable, with considerable upside potential.  Let's give him a chance to develop his game and see what we have.  In my opinion his upside might be a mini-me Bo Horvat.  While the aforementioned threesome have played ok, they are not setting the world on fire and any one of the them, or a rotation of all three, could sit out on any given night and give Gaunce a chance to develop.  Here are the key stats of the guys that have been keeping him out of the lineup.

Skille, 29, highest points 17, 6 yrs. ago
Chapat, 24,most points 5, never played more than 33 games.
Megan, 26, highest points 9, never played more than 36 games.

We aren't making the playoffs or winning the cup this year, so lets develop our young players and see what we have.  Even if you don't think Gaunce should be the guy, then send him down, the bring up another prospect and try and develop him and see what you have.  Skille, Chapat, and Megan are not our future.  What they are are decent depth signings.

100% agree, I've always liked Gaunce and watch him closely, he is a very good player but coach Willie has a complete lack of vision for the fourth line. Gaunce is extremely tough in the corners, if he has some others players on his line that had any semblance of a hockey iq, things would be a lot better.

I don't like seeing the AHL plugs on the 4th line. Chaput and Megna have been OK but the problem is that they are as good as they will ever get. Gaunce has a lot of upside so let him play.

Once again, coach Willie has gone into damage control to try to save his job by either over playing some players or not playing others enough or at all.

The problem I see is that Gaunce is the only prospect on the 4th so he gets short shifted. I agree with your take on Megna and Chaput, they are long shots. Willie has to find a way for Gaunce  getting at least 10 minutes of TOI. I am hoping that in the spring this happens.  This is where the 2 years in Utica should help Gaunce get through his rookie season. He can grow a lot in a year, experience wise.

WD's comments on Gaunce via Kuzma in the Province:

Brendan Gaunce was a healthy scratch Tuesday for the fourth-consecutive game.

The centre/winger was a versatile fourth-line lock, but Willie Desjardins is more confident in Jack Skille, Michael Chaput and Jayson Megna. “He’s able to give us more,” Desjardins said of Gaunce. “It happens a lot of times — you get in the lineup and you relax a bit. He needs to have more edge to his game.”

Said Gaunce, who has but three assists in 29 games: “You’ve got to be confident when you’re playing. I don’t necessarily have the same confidence as I did last year and that’s something I’m trying to work on and need to work on.”

Not surprised with Willie's comment. At 6 -8 minutes a game you have to do something to get the coaches attention. His first 20 games is adjusting to NHL speed and position and then he has to show a reason for staying. I thought his physical play was an option. He does finish checks but needs more in your face plays. Not meaning he has to be a fighter.
