Alexander Edler | #23 | D

I think the team needs to give Edler some maintenance days this season.  So far been pretty lucky in terms of injuries on the back-end so it should'nt be an issue to sit Edler 4 or 5 times a season if it keeps him fresh.

NHL teams #1 defensemen never get 'maintenance days' in the middle of a season.  They sometimes get them when really strong teams are very high in the standings and it is close to playoff time.

Just does not happen...teams need them for a reason. They are their best D.

The Edler hit deep in the SJ zone last night was classic Edler IMO. I said last spring that this team would make playoffs and I stand by that. Edler will have a huge role and since the d-core is the weakest aspect of this team his game is critical. The challenge in CUP play is always about how the heavy game comes to bear. The youth on the Canucks have to experience that for their long term success. Edler can provide a level of physicality that most on the Canucks cannot come close to. Edler, Myers, Fantenerg and Benn can play that game. Only Edler and Myers are top 4 d-men.

Vancouver defense is the biggest weakness on the team. Bennings work here is not over. that said I don't want him to make TDL deals that will move any youth or picks out of the org for a playoff bid. Make room for Tryamkin's return and some games for Rafferty. I have advocated for Tanev's trade for 3 years but think that won't happen now. He will likely be resigned unless playoffs expose his physical downside. IMHO the reduced TOI for Tanev and Edler has benefited both their games.

"Tanevs physical downside". Not every member of the D have to throw hits to show Physical dominance. Tanev"s game is all about using his body to seperate man from puck which he does extremlely well. Without taking penalties. Hows that not physical when the majority of these guys out weigh him.And actually making passes that cross our blue line to someone.....In this aspect Edler and Myers over the last few games were not playing their best and actually fairly poorly. Eddy had a great game tonite as did the entire team. Im pretty sure Tanevs jumping in on sutters behalf was fairly physical even though he'd not fair well if he didn't hold on tight. In my opinion hes 1 defence that is a must stay for these upcoming years.

I'm curious as to how long it will be before Eddy gets the PP2 back away from Myers.I believe Eddy plays a stronger role there then Myers. Is it a way for green to manage Eddys TOI ?

I disagree, I like Myers' offensive ability more and the second powerplay has been very good. No need to change it.

As you mentioned this way we also reduce Edler's TOI. He's getting up there in age and it would be smart to maintain less ice time so he doesn't get as fatigued!

I have always thought Edler is under appreciated in our market.  The guy is the top defenseman ever to play for the Canucks. It is clear.

Thanks Edler for all your work for our team!!

How cool would it be if he hit 100 goals, 300 assists and 400 points in the same game.

Amongst all the praise and attention our young stars are garnering this year, Edler is still the backbone of our defense in my opinion. He has my vote for the Unsung Hero Award this year.

Absolutely.  I can see us signing Edler to another contact when this one is done.  He’s very important.

I’ll admit, I was worried he was going to see a steady decline in usefulness at the end of last season. However, since the emergence of Hughes, he no longer takes those risky offensive pinches that he was getting caught on a lot because Hughes has taken that roll to be the primary offensive push from the back end. This has allowed Edler to now just be a really well rounded defenseman with strong defensive zone coverage and grinding along the boards. I can see us keeping him as a defensive specialist moving into his golden years.

And we’re going to add another elite young D man with offensive skills in Rathbone soon.  Eddy will have to take s lot less money, but if he wants to play that 6 th D man like Fanta is doing now he’d be fantastic to have IMO

Now that QH has taken the #1D role Edler can play in the #2-3D role that he's much more suited for. Still it's no coincidence that the team generally goes on losing skids whenever he's injured. Edler on the second pairing for this contract and then on the third pairing for one or two more years, please.

Underrated probably defines much of Eddie's career, to be honest. He's the backbone in a lot of ways and his veteran leadership is hugely valuable, but I would say that Hughes is our best defenseman overall.
