I have gone back and forth on whether we should sign Edler or not.

I really think we need to move on, but at the same time he was still one of our best D and the only LD really capable of penalty killing.  He should also come at a reasonable bargain.

Barring a trade where we get a younger, better version (which I don’t know we can afford), I think we can leverage Edler’s over 35 status to give him a performance bonus contract.

We could sign him to a really low base contract like $1.5 million and then add about that much again in performance bonuses.  It specially helps us in that we can push those bonuses into the following year to get beyond our cap crunch this coming season.  That gives us an experienced hand for very little money.

If the goal is to be Cup competitive in 2-3 years then where does Edler fit if he is resigned? Even if you get him at $1.5 mil?
The org depth suggests to me that there is more value over that time frame to invest the TOI in younger d-men who might be on the team later or be part of a trade that brings a piece back that helps.

The only deal that makes sense on Edler is a cheap cost and no restriction on movement, a one year deal. At least that way he could be moved at the TDL for an asset.

Edler isn't going to get moved at any deadlines if he signs here cheap... I think everyone should have learned that by now.

Feel free to go find a younger, better, and cheaper options than Edler... we don't have a replacement in the organization for Edler as it stands and barring a trade where we used other assets to get a replacement, he would likely represent the best option in free agency in terms of what he offers and what we can afford.

That's like expecting the current Federal Liberals to be good at fiscal policy.  Edler isn't going to move & thus, there's no way he'd sign a deal without trade protection.

If he doesn’t want to move then he retires. No way they can sign him with a NTC or NMC. Any team interested in him would have to talk him into it which is fair enough. Liberals? :(

If he wants that then he has to be looking at 2 mil or less on 1 year deals. We can't afford to give him a 35+ contract with term. This is exactly the kind of mistake Jim has to stop making.

Never thought about a performance bonus, but I guess that is an option with his age on a 1-year deal. Would probably make a lot of sense actually.

I hadn't until about 4:30am this morning when I was suffering from insomnia :)

It makes tremendous sense to leverage that 35+ bonus ability and takes away a lot of the risk.  We have more cap space next year so it isn't a big deal if we push a million from Edler into that year in the event he hits his bonuses.

We can fit him easily under the cap but also not expecting him to play for close to league minimum like folks are suggesting (and I don't see happening).  Games played and being in the top 4 in average minutes are two pretty good bonus markers for him.  If he thinks he is still a top 4, then he can get paid like one IF he performs.  If we end up lucky and one of Rathbone or Juolevi actually shows they can step up, then Edler is the 3rd pairing LD right where he really belongs at this stage of his career.

I think everyone knows we would just ideally be signing him as protection against the young guys just not being ready and as someone who can play a PK role with more limited minutes.  Of course, if Benning can swing picking up two other veteran D during expansion or the offseason I would absolutely be up for that instead.  I had mentioned Zadorov and Ristolainen as guys who could fit and are reportedly having a good chance of moving to a new home.  If we get two guys, then Edler is redundant as the Juolevi/Rathbone combo can be the 3rd pairing LD and be protected as much as they show they need to be.

Ok, there are exceptions (Paul Martin).

I don't believe Martin was a liberal. I remember one of his ships visited Vcr and it was the biggest heap of rust I have ever ever seen. The crew must have been thankful when the ship completed an ocean crossing. Holes in the deck, unable to batten down the hatches. It was detained by the Cdn Coast Guard from sailing initially. Not the mark of a man who cared about the well being of lowly seamen

JB talked about this on the radio this morning.  Benning added that the league is in a flat cap era.  He said ?Edler expressed his wanting to play another year, but did mention the flat cap.  So any dollars offered, imo, will be a lot less than what ?Edler was getting previously.

Someone find @DarthMelvin, and console them.

Honestly, anyone that doesn't want him back as a solid #6-#7 D on a cheaper, likely bonus filled contract, are off their rocker.

Guy was still our best hard minute/PK D this year, even with the Covid outbreak and the $&!# show that was our schedule/practice/rest time. With more managed minutes, a regular schedule and games off to rest, I have little doubt he can play a lot closer to the 19-20 season level. Which was still pretty damn good BTW.

He sed he was looking forward to a call And Edler would like to come back...but it not an actual factual that the Nucks will re-sign him.

I believe he is done here,

Fair enough. I agree that nothing is guaranteed. You should prepare yourself though.

You have to understand the reason Edler was chalking up those minutes is because he gets tired on the ice and is pretty much stuck out there, while his team mate waits anxiously on the bench for him to make to the bench lol. You see, I noticed that a lot of people say that he logs these minutes but don't get it twisted...it's not because he is a machine and loves the playing time...it's because he gets caught out there and is to tired to rush the bench. most minutes are just following players around in our zone cuz he can't hang. this is FACT

Yeah... That's not what I'm referring to as hard minutes.
