8 hours until the start of free agency. Ugh. I’ve already mentally parted ways with Markstrom and Toffoli but Tanev has been my favorite player for years and I really don’t want to lose him. Please hockey gods, Chris Tanev re-signs in Vancouver!! Age is just a number. He’s a warrior and has a lot of great hockey in front of him! Don’t break my heart.

Gotta imagine Tanev's future here hinges on what happens with OEL.

They don't play the same side but OEL will take his money and thensome.

Our left side will be stacked but Myers as our best option on the right is scary.

Might be able to keep him if we can somehow dump a Sutter or Eriksson type... it'll take some magic.

I think OEL is out of the picture, I won't be surprised to see Tanev back, but I think the price range has already been set today for Tanev to stay with the team in a COVID market.

Shattenkirk 3.9 million per

Shultz 4 million per

DeMelo 3.5 million per

3.25 - 3.75 x 3 years, lock him up like Trump!

Tanman is better than all three of those defensemen, IMO.

I generally agree, was factoring a hometown discount, but let's run to 4.25.

A year ago, I don't think any of us would have been having a discussion below 5.

You're probably right. I think in a non-COVID world, the discussion for Tanev probably starts at $4.5M and ends up a bit over $5M. In our new world, we might be able get going under $5M.

I don't think we can afford to go to 5, I think we probably cap out on him around 4.5 right now. I think more than that, and we will probably choose to back fill with some 2 million contracts and have more options.

Tanev leaves the organization 78th in all-time Canuck, in the middle of an odd run of defensemen.  I'm too young to really have seem him play, but I wonder if Lars Lindgren is not a bad career Canuck comparable.

76.  Lars Lindgren D 335 23 99 122 -19 292
77.  Adrian Aucoin D 341 49 71 120 11 245
78.  Chris Tanev D 514 22 96 118 43 121
79.  Jiri Bubla D 256 17 101 118 -51 202
80.  Paul Reinhart D 131 24 90 114 -2 74

He also currently sits 25th in all-time games played

Games Played GP
1.  Henrik Sedin 1330
2.  Daniel Sedin 1306
3.  Trevor Linden 1140
...
23.  Todd Bertuzzi 518
24.  Kirk McLean 516
25.  Chris Tanev 514

He also is currently 13th in career +/-

Plus / Minus "+/-"
1.  Henrik Sedin 165
2.  Daniel Sedin 147
3.  Alexandre Burrows 106
...
12.  Brendan Morrison 45
13.  Chris Tanev 43
14.  Robert Dirk 42

Seriously.  This hurts more than I thought it would.  And to Calgary?  Damn.

I hate it.   But I know it likely had to be...just like Marky.

I always hate this part of things...."change".   He'll be missed....

Of all those stats, +/- is the only one where the player can fall down the list. Given that Tanev played for such bad teams in the 2010's, I wonder where he peaked in terms of +/-

That said, 4x$4.5 is way too much, Benning was right not to go there.

Props to Jimbo for not letting  emotions or what a player did in the past determine future salary.   Love Tanev, but his good playoffs should not blur the reality of him being a major injury machine.

2016-17   53 games

17-18      42 games

18-19      55 games

And at the lock down he was out as well.  He signed for 4 years but if you take into account his injury record the flames will probably not get more than 3 years of games out of him.

I looked at it and +43 is his peak.  A testament to the player he is, -8 in 15/16 was his only minus year.

Kind of annoyed at Tanev on this. I thought he bled blue and green, but I also understand he wanted more term than what Benning was able to offer.

Well, Tanev's last season was a bit of an anomaly, playing with Hughes.  First season I can remember him not being injured. I'm guessing that will change back in CGY, and he'll spend more time on the IR.

It's too bad, I thought he would be a lifer like the Sedins and Edler.

Thinking about salaries. Any player that makes over $3.65 million a year, has a salary of $10,000 PER DAY!  What I am wondering is, how much of that do they actually take home? I am sure they pay lots of taxes, pay into pensions,, have union dues, pay agents and special trainers.
