My apologies if there's another thread like this, couldn't find it.

From what Daly was saying the other day, it is sounding like teams may not see the cap increase that they have been hoping for. It sounds like both Bettman and Daly expect it to remain pretty flat, meaning that teams could be stuck at the current 71.4 million in space.

Based on that, we have 20 guys currently signed leaving about 9.2 million in space and its a strong possibility that we will buyout at least Higgins and possibly Burrows to make more room.

With that in mind, how would you like to see GMJB spend our cap space this summer? Do you want him running trades with teams needing to move guys to make space, or do you want him signing best players he can in the free agency free for all.

I've included players that I think will likely hit the market. Yes, I've included Stamkos as regardless of what is being said by both sides, I can't see them being able to make the math work. He's going to want at least 9 million per, and that will be hard with the other guys they need to work in over the next 2 years.

I've also tagged some teams that I expect to be hit the hardest by the cap remaining stagnant, but you might have other decisions.

This is Multiple Choice by the way!

I understand the reasoning for making trades with teams trying to clear cap space, but players like Stamkos don't come along very often. I'd push hard for players that could help this team (Stamkos, Okposo, Brouwer etc) first, then look to be making trades if we don't manage to sign a top flight UFA.

I agree. Although I'd like to take advantage of other teams, if we can grab Stamkos, I'm not sure I'm in a hurry to help them out either :)

Not sure how I missed him. Added!

Wish I hadn't have already voted... :(

I voted Yandle, we really need that PMD and offence from our blueline, but failing that, or in addition to that, I believe that Okposo would be the perfect UFA to target to play with the Sedins. He is the type of player they need to be successful, and is also a very good and consistent player on his own as well for after they retire.

Also, there's a LOT of moves yet to be made before we can remotely determine actual cap space.

Burrows/Higgins waived/bought out/traded/retiring?

With Gudbranson added, do we now move one of Sbisa/Edler?

Are we re-signing Hamhuis?

Will any of Biega, Vey etc be waived?

Larsen signed?

It supports multiple selections. I probably should have mentioned that as well :)

Should also consider Matt Martin IMO.

Added. As well as a note that this is multiple choice.

I figure if someone selects multiple, they will hopefully consider and mention trades that they think we should make to make room for the cap hit.

Queue all the Higgins and Burrows for Toronto's 31st overall, right?

Well, Vey hasn't been resigned from last year. Biega I think they will have competing for 7th D spot in camp. Biega's cap hit is low enough that they can bury him in Utica and not have it effect us in the NHL.

I think we will resign Vey, but wouldn't be surprised to see us package him if we can snag the right guys in Free Agency. He also might make an attractive piece for a team needing a reasonably good, affordable forward.

Also this. Why can't we sign UFA's and take advantage of cap strapped teams?

I like the poll, much better than the average thread so kudos to the OP.

I agree on the "do both" aspect, but I suppose forcing people to make a choice avoids the bland middle of the road answer that would be the default.

If I were forced to choose, I would probably say target free agents.  If the cap doesn't go up at all, then there will be a real downward pressure on salaries this summer just like last summer.  It doesn't mean Stamkos won't get paid, but it could certainly mean that the next tier of guys, especially the ones on the wrong side of 30 could be relative bargains.

On the down side of a cap that low, good luck getting rid of Burrows, Sbisa, and Higgins.  They will be amongst a pile of veterans on the market just for cap reasons.  We may have to bite the bullet and keep them in the fold until the middle of the season when they might have rental value as pending UFAs.

In that scenario we could still afford either Stamkos and a lower tier $3-4 million veteran UFA (or trade pick up from a cap strapped team), or we could afford two of the Okposo, Eriksson, Lucic level of guys who will be in the $4-6 million range.

In any event, our cap room could be of pretty significant value this offseason, because most of the other teams with cap space don't have the actual dollars to spend as they are not cap ceiling teams.

Why?  Just because he hits?  He doesn't PK.

He would just be taking the spot of someone like Gaunce who at least can PK, no?

Personally I'd be targeting Okposo, Brouwer and Martin (though not all three combined) at forward. (Stamkos is a pipe dream IMO so I didn't bother.) Yandle on defense but we may have better luck targeting a trade for a younger OFD with one of those cap strapped teams. Waive Higgins and Burr. Trade Edler to Montreal for their 9th.

Doubt all of that happens though  And I'm guessing we move Sbisa, not Edler.

Martin, Gaunce, Dorsett as our 4th would be a BIOTCH to play against.

I'll leave it up to JB to decide how we get it, but it's pretty simple to figure out we need more SCORING.  Second last in average goals/game isn't going to cut it - we aren't the NJD of the mid 90's so we're going to have to score to win some games.
