Kirk Muller is once again back with the Montreal Canadiens.

Muller was named as an associate coach by the Canadiens on Thursday, marking his return to the organization where he played for four seasons and got his start in coaching.

“We are very pleased to announce the appointment of Kirk Muller, and are extremely happy about his desire to return to the Canadiens’ organization,” Montreal general manager Marc Bergevin said in a statement.

“Kirk brings a great deal of experience, determination and leadership, and I have no doubt that these qualities will be essential for our coaching staff.”

The Canadiens missed the playoffs this season after going 38-38-5 without star goaltender Carey Price.

Muller, who will join Michel Therrien's coaching staff, was an assistant with the Habs from 2006-2011. The team made the playoffs four times during that stretch.

The 50-year-old spent the last two years as an assistant coach with Ken Hitchcock's St. Louis Blues. The Blues were eliminated by the San Jose Sharks in the Western Conference Final this spring.

After leaving Montreal, Muller served as the head coach of the Carolina Hurricanes' AHL affiliate before making the jump to Hurricanes head coach in November 2011, where he remained for three seasons.

Muller captained the Canadiens in 1994-95 while leading them to a Stanley Cup in 1993. He finished his career with 357 goals and 602 assists in 1,349 regular season games.

Solid hire for the Canadiens. It's early, but I think Canadiens will make the playoffs if Carey Price stays healthy all season long.

Not if they trade Subban for Hall they won't.

Interesting that it's associate coach instead of just assistant coach; could be a replacement if next season starts poorly.

It's Therrien that wanted to name him associate by respect - he was the one that convinced him to join.  Muller was the one running the Blues powerplay - one of the best in the league and Montreal needs help on their PP.

Muller said he got a quite a few offers but thought this was the best fit - he didn't want to try for Calgary/Anaheim.

Doesn't speak french well enough to be head coach of the Canadiens - it's a requirement.  Also it's Therrien that wanted to name him associate by respect - he was the one that convinced him to join.  Muller was the one running the Blues powerplay - one of the best in the league and Montreal needs help on their PP.

That's why Muller said at the presser he wants to re-learn french. He said that he stopped once he was traded by Habs when he was playing for them.

Montreal was smart in hiring him it is a good fit for both parties.  Can't blame him on passing on Calgary Burkie is up to usual self looking for a puppet coach he can handle.  Hartley was a hero when they made the playoffs but obviously the scapegoat when they didn't.  Burke was probably unable to deal with Hartley as Bob would push back so it was timely to show him the door.  Quite surprised Nonis hasn't surfaced yet in Cowtown he has always been a favourite sidekick for Burke.  The perfect yes man.
