For some reason the term "structured" is used to describe this defensive style of play (as if offensively oriented systems don't also have a structure). Not blaming the Canucks or the Comets. That is the best way for a team without much offensive talent but with good goaltending to compete. But the NHL really has to do something to increase scoring and to improve the flow of the game (which of course the AHL would follow). Not only is the amount of scoring less than it used to be, but the nature of the goals has changes. Most goals are the result of screens, deflections, goal-mouth scrambles, or lucky bounces. Not many really nice plays any more. Goals like Henrik's last night against Florida are rare. Years ago goalies used to look relatively small in the net. Now they dominate the net. They are bigger, quicker, and more athletic, and have big equipment. The NHL is apparently moving to smaller goalie equipment, but raising the cross-bar a few inches and widening the net a few inches would add quite a bit to the scoring area. Right after my comment about low scoring the Comets have a scoring explosion. I will try to remember to complain about scoring every game from now on. hobart16
4 goals in the last 9 minutes to cut the heart of the Crunch. Comets have won 4 out of 6 against Syracuse this year, which is top of the ledger. Great game by the Comets giving up nothing and so nice to have Zalewski back. He and Cassels have some chemistry. St. Johns loses tonight and falls back a bit more. 3 tough home games coming up with a slight break until Wednesday night. Hopefully some guys get some rest and come back and we don't lose momentum. Looking forward to seeing the Comets continue their streak. Bachman can be nasty when he is hot. And he is hot right now. I think his last 6 games he has a 97% save percentage. Demko did well in his last game too with a 96% save game that he stole. Travis has it where he likes it. 4 even lines grinding away. After listening to Biega praise Green I wonder if McEneny isn't going to be another example of somebody who took Greener's process and made himself into something better. Kid has come out of the woodwork. Good skater with some size and all of a sudden a threat on offense too.

canuckledraggin
I guess Green is riding the hot goalie because that's 3 in a row for Bachman who even played the back to back earlier in the week. Is there another explanation? or is he just trying to get wins since they've put themselves in the playoff hunt...

Demko did have the flu last weekend... although you'd think that would have dissipated enough for him to play in the second half of the back-to-back vs SJ. I guess you can draw a parallel to the Canucks goalie situation where even though Markstrom is the future and has played great, Miller has been even better and is technically the "number one" in the eyes of the coach. Bachman is the vet in Utica and his numbers/play have been insane lately.
Beary Sweet
Based on @stonecoldstevebernier updates and videos of the goals, it seems like the Comets are starting to get on a roll and dominate their opponents game after game. Good awareness by Kunyk on his goal with him having very limited options and decides to drive it to the net and tuck it 5 hole by Gudlevskis. Also great play by McEneny getting a point shot off and just throwing it on net and 'Cuse was screened by a Comet which is what we should be seeing from our parent club also. Grr Willie.. nice to see Cassels get going also. Jake is starting to get in a bit of a roll as he has points in consecutive games now I believe. The goals are also going to start coming as he's been shooting more which is great to see. Hope the Comets keep this going as their opponents should take them seriously now. Go Comets! You're right, the third period today was one of the most dominant I've seen the Comets play this season. I only get to watch the weekend games so I can't speak to the games vs St. John's this week but the Comets are definitely playing more cohesively now and not relying so heavily on the Archibald-Valk-Grenier line as before. Great goaltending helps too. The only thing they really need to fix is the powerplay... much like the big club, it flat out stinks and without Subban its even less of a threat. Gaudette Celly
Really hope Z is putting the concussion issues behind him. Like JR, I was looking forward to him as a near-future addition to our 4th line. Size and speed, with good forecheck and work ethic -- exactly what we're trying to instill here. More upside than either of Chaput or Megna, imo.

He dressed for the games Tuesday and Wednesday in SJ but wasn't surprised that he didn't play. Kinda thought that he would get the start last night. The Comets have three games in four nights coming up so he should get back in there.

Plays are made more for getting pucks on net hoping for a screen or deflection rather than a nice shot to score. I get more excited about Sbisa scoring on a wide open shot or seeing Horvat cut off the wing in front of the net and scoring 5 hole. Quite frankly I rarely watch a NHL game that does not have the Canucks playing. Why? As a Canuck fan I have watched these guys since they joined the org and my pleasure in watching is seeing their development. Combine that with the almost 24/7 availability of hockey games. Most of his scoring chances have come from rushing down the right side, that one was an exception. Might be worth a look see.

It seems to me no matter who our coach is there are always people on here who think they know better. Jake played his best hockey on the RW after the JWC last season - that will do for me. Last year around this time he went from meh to suddenly a legit prospect, which is why both the Comets and Canucks re-signed him midseason. He looked good in his callup on the eastern road trip. The key is that he plays the way they want, in particular aggressively with grit and a high motor -- the things Grenier either lacks or doesn't show consistently.
