I have to agree with this, he's doing well in a defensive role. Hopefully he can build on this and become a more relied upon member of the team next year in the last of his ELC.

The Comets are going to the PP after Virtanen rushed into the Albany zone and got tripped up.

Comets seem to score whenever Jake draws a penalty.

If Cassels and Zalewski can continue to pick up their game, playoffs would be a real possibility.  The arrival of a Boeser or junior players would be a boost, and Goldobin would put them over the top but I doubt he's leaving the Canucks.

I haven't seen them outplayed in awhile.  As long as the big club stays healthy I think they've got a decent shot.  Demko looks very steady in the crease too......if he can get hot, that can go a long way.

The Comets had a lengthy 5-on-3 but couldn't muster anything. Definitely an area where they could've used Subban's shot to threaten a big one timer from the point.

Demko is standing tall in the third. I've counted three point blank shots in front of the net and he's turned all of them aside... the Comets just managed to kill off an Albany powerplay that was their most dangerous of the night. 4:30 to go in the third now.

He draws a lot of penalties.......he's very fast for this level and he gets right up on the dmen before they get the chance to control the gap and they are forced to either interfere or make a desperation play with their stick.

He just made a great pass to Cassels too, but a great save kept it out.  I like their chemistry, Cassels is so smart and Jake really drives the play and tempo.

Demko is shining right now.

This is a huge win and they're starting to fire on all cylinders.  It'll be interesting to see what Green does when Bachman gets back because Demko is clearly getting better and better as he gets consecutive games.

Comets win this one, 3-0. Demko makes 38 saves for his first shutout as a pro, and he made some truly incredible saves in the third to keep the Devils from getting anything on the board. Despite the shot differential (38-27), this was another fantastic team effort by the Comets on both sides of the puck and if you group it in with yesterday's game, this team is playing some of its best hockey of the year. Virtanen had another stellar showing and got rewarded for it, as did Cassels who deserved a goal of his own... you can really tell he's starting to understand the pro game a bit better. McEneny was impressive as well. Zalewski has shown signs of the player he was last season when he had his breakout year.

The Comets are now one point back of St. John's with a game in hand. They'll play again tomorrow at 12:00 to close out the weekend vs Bridgeport. Three stars: Demko, Virtanen, Zalewski.

1st
No Scoring
2nd
8:00 UTI Jake Virtanen (6) ASST: Evan McEneny (12), Cody Kunyk (19)

12:05 UTI Wacey Hamilton (8) ASST: Colby Robak (24), Ashton Sautner (3)

3rd
7:02 UTI Borna Rendulic (10) ASST: Mike Zalewski (10), Chad Billi

You're right about Zalewski, he's starting to return to then played he was.  Good timing too

With St. Johns losing Comets are 1 point out with a game in hand.

Comets are just all over their opponents lately.  Demko looks awesome and Rendulic, Virtanen, Cassels, Zalewski are all coming on strong.  Kunyk is having a great run out of the woodwork.  Very fun to watch these guys.  Valk, Archibald and Grenier are dangerous and draw the checking line usually.  Now we have 4 lines playing well just the way Travis wants it.

1st career shutout for Demko and Utica take the win over Albany 3-0. Jake gets over the hump with a goal off McEneny's feed as they broke off on a odd man rush. Hamilton scored off a mad scramble in front after Sautner threw the puck on net and he managed to find the puck and tuck it home. Then Rendulic scored on the PP off nice passing from Zalewski and Pelletier and he made no mistake from the slot. Great game played overall. Jake had a solid 2 way, 200 ft game yet again tonight and continues to improve on his game. Hope he keeps this up and maybe get in a groove to earn a call up back to the big club. What a solid executed game and a great team effort. Comets have won 4 of their last 5 if I'm not mistaken. Looking forward to tomorrow's clash vs Bridgeport. Go Comets!

2014 draftees come through in the clutch. Jake, scoring like he can, nets the winner and Thatcher getting his first professional shutout on 38 shots.

Great to see the Comets team finally coming together and at the right time too.

Should the Canucks' season be over before the AHL playoffs, I hope Gaunce is sent down to help the Comets. I believe Utica will not only make the playoffs, the Comets will be a dangerous dark horse. Adding Brendan will make them more dangerous, not to mention the addition of Goldobin

To add to that, Cassels was excellent all night and McEneny might just end up being the best of them all.

The Comets are underway vs Bridgeport, with Demko in net for his third game in three nights... that's what a 38 save shutout will earn you. Carcone draws in for Pelletier, and Nilsson draws in for Pedan. Subban remains sidelined with his injury.

Archibald-Zalewski-Grenier

Kunyk-Cassels-Virtanen

Carcone-Valk-Rendulic

Labate-Hamilton-Bancks

Billins-Shields

Robak-Nilsson

Sautner-McEneny

1-0 Comets after one, with a 12-5 advantage in shots as well. I didn't watch very much of the first but Demko made a couple of nice saves, his best on a breakaway from Kellen Jones who split the defense to come in on Demko. The Comets penalty kill was a bright spot again with Bancks-Hamilton and Archibald-Cassels (their two primary forward units) doing a great job of pressuring the Sound Tigers and clearing the zone.
