Yes the top four in each division make the playoffs. The Comets are one point behind St John's who holds the final playoff spot with one game in hand which will be two games in hand after St John's plays tonight. Aren't they four back of Toronto for the final spot?

St. John's are only ahead because they have more points than our Comets having played a game more. But they're technically in a playoff spot right now unless St. John's win tonight. Ice Caps trailing vs the Crunch so a chance to officially solidify that coveted playoff spot

Stierlitz
The final score 2:4, St.John's lost. Comets Army @CometsArmy 23m23 minutes Crunch win and Amerks win in regulation, also known as a fantastic night for the Utica Comets #CometsArmy
UticaHockey
The way that the AHL lists the standings is confusing because they order the teams based on "points percentage" rather than straight points. The Comets have 61 points which is one behind St John's but the Comets have two games in hand. At the end of the year all of the teams in our conference will have played the same number of games so points in the end is what matters. Only in the Pacific division where some teams play 68 games while others play 76 does the percentage determine standings order.

canuckledraggin
I'm curious as to why teams would lend their players to division rivals. Since Rochcester is out of the playoff picture they loaned Cal O'Reilly to the Marlies. I didn't know teams did that. http://www.eliteprospects.com/

They loan players all the time. Doesn't happen much in the Premier League but quite a bit in the lower leagues.
Nuxfanabroad
9 pts back of Syracuse? TBay just lost THREE C's..therefore, lots of call-ups, right? Hmm....
stonecoldstevebernier
The Comets are playing Bridgeport at 4:00, and Demko will make his sixth straight start. The lines are significantly jumbled with Grenier being called up and Hamilton injured, and its hard to say if any of the lines is really a "first line" at this point (as Archibald and Valk have been split up recently). Green definitely looks like he's trying to keep them as evenly balanced as possible to cover for the new holes in the roster. Subban returns to the lineup from his injury, and Pedan is a scratch. Archibald-Zalewski-Roy Kunyk-Valk-Virtanen Carcone-Pelletier-Rendulic Bancks-Cassels-Labate Billins-Shields McEneny-Subban Sautner-Robak

No word on any injury for him... I can only assume Green is keeping him out as part of the defense rotation on the three-in-three weekends, since they have 8 healthy defensemen now. Its definitely been an odd season for him, considering how close he looked to making the NHL last year.
stonecoldstevebernier
No score after one, shots are 12-7 Utica. The Comets had two powerplays but couldn't convert, and didn't really get properly set up for either one. Their best chance of the period was a 2-on-0 down low with Carcone and Pelletier, where Carcone passed it off for the one timer which Halak was able to get across and save. Subban had a noticeably good period offensively with several shot attempts and utilized his skating to join the rush on a few occasions. However, he also made a horrific giveaway in his own zone where he was facing the boards in the corner and backhanded it right into the slot and onto a Sound Tiger player's stick. Zalewski also had an iffy period with a giveaway leading to a breakaway, and an ill-timed drop pass on a powerplay rush that put the Comets offside. Demko had a couple of nice saves but wasn't overly tested, apart from the breakaway where he made a nice blocker save.

The only chances he's gotten are being called up just in case of a last minute injury or scratch happening. I believe he should be given a shot in the NHL. He's been steady and solid here with the Comets. Solid hitter, good defensively in his own zone. Him, McEneny, Subban and Robak have held the fort this year and have kept Utica in most of the games this season. Great to see
stonecoldstevebernier
Cassels just dropped the gloves with Burroughs and landed more than a few solid punches before slipping and falling to the ice. Not a lot of action here in the second but that was a spirited tilt.
stonecoldstevebernier
And now Valk scores to make it 1-0! Virtanen with a nice backhand feed to Valk who lifts a backhander of his own past Halak.
stonecoldstevebernier
1-0 Comets after two, shots are 22-16 Comets. Utica has played a sound defensive game while controlling most of the 5-on-5 play, although Bridgeport made a late charge there with a powerplay and some sustained pressure afterwards. The PK unit of Archibald, Zalewski, McEneny, and Robak did well to limit the Sound Tigers from any prime scoring chances on the PP though. There wasn't much for Demko to do for most of the period but he was excellent late and made a great save on Kearns who drove to the front of the net out of the corner with about 30 seconds to go. The Kunyk-Valk-Virtanen line has been the best for the Comets and generated the only goal so far.
