[Report] Insider claims team has borrowed $300m from the NHL, relocation imminent

You will have to click the link to read the article, as the site has disabled copying text. Not sure how reliable Hockey Feed is as a source, however the article was based off of comments made by reporter Gary Lawless during a radio interview on Winnipeg's Team 1290AM.

The comments from the Radio Interview can be heard here: http://radioego.com/ego/listen/22898

I'm sure there will be some debate on the validity of this report and whether or not Hockey Feed is an acceptable source, but regardless of that, what are your opinions of the situation in Carolina?

If the team does in fact get sold and relocated, do you thing it is more likely that the team moves to Las Vegas, forgoing the expansion process? Or is it more likely the team is moved to Quebec, allowing the league to still collect the $500m in expansion fees from Las Vegas?

Discuss.

I've made my opinion pretty clear before...

They are QC bound, and as early as this year. I thought it would be Florida two years ago but then Broward County gave them $86 mil to stay and the NHL never says no to free money.

LV will be an expansion team. Guaranteed. QC was never going to be accepted as an expansion team.

That would certainly make more sense, although the reporter in the article speculated the team would be relocated to Las Vegas, forgoing the expansion process. I just don't see that as making sense. Like you said, the NHL will never say no to free money.

if that does happen then all the people saying bettman is against the Canadian teams will have plenty of fuel.

Feel free to take a look at the history of my posts in this subform by searching 'expansion.'

With the exception of the switch from FLA to CAR, it's all playing out.

Our beloved sport is being run by a bunch of corrupt moronic blowhards that have zero clue how to operate a lemonade stand let alone a multi billion dollar franchise.  This league's future will always be grim with Bettman at the helm.  Does Alabama need a franchise Gary?

And that would be patently wrong in this case.

QC makes far more sense as a relocation because they need to do literally nothing but answer the phones and they will be sold out. An expansion team requires groundwork of the leading year to build excitement. QC needs nothing. It's already a slam dunk economically as a step up from Carolina.

Besides, they would be a half decent team to start. CAR isn't a world beater but they have some good pieces in place.

Bettman is just a Count Chocula looking meat puppet. It's his masters, the greedy team owners, that are the problem. He can't tie his own shoes without their consent.

The owners all love the millions they each get for free when the expansions dues are divided up and the sport be damned.

Like when you consolidate your debts into one big unsightly pile, then put'cher nose to the grindstone(accepting a lengthy tunnel of 2 decades).

MERGE Yotes, Cats, Ducks & Canes.

Move 'em to New Orleans, to sacrifice to Sea level-rise.

The excess players can start the WHA pt2.

Sick Joe Pesci & DeNiro on Buttman.

Give Canadian teams an EXTRA 10~20% cap limit, due to taxes.

If US teams whine..F*ck'em! Start your OWN friggin league champs! We'd like our gift back, from Lord Stanley, you hegemonic bullies. I'd almost rather see 10 Canadian teams merge with the Russian/EU leagues, at this point!

NO, I don't LIKE the NHL any more. Like ice hockey, yeah.. But this entity sucks.

Is there enough time now to move a team to Quebec for next season?

I don't see why not.

The Thrashers sale was officially announced on May 31st, 2011 and a couple of weeks wouldn't have made a major difference.

If it's happening now the bulk of the work has been done behind closed doors already, and that seems like there is smoke to that fire.

From a logistics point of view? It would probably mean some all nighters for lawyers, management and contractors but they could get it done. Like someone else mentioned, getting fans on board wouldn't be an issue at all. You could announce the move the day before the season started and I guarantee the home opener would be a sell out.

Just remember, it only took one night for the Baltimore Colts to move to Indianapolis. < Link

When two mtn ranges catch fire, you've got to start divvying the choppers & fire-fighters. Hopefully there's a big body of water nearby. Hope the Desert & toilet-swirls are the first 2 of more US dominoes. Tired of their half-empty dump-bldgs, that only start to fill when they start to win.

& goodness, them pine beetles have turned everything brown & dead. They look/act like Buttman!  :^)

It's already a done deal.  The league is waiting to announce it (because relocation for this reason is not good) after the fun of the Cup Final, the draft, and free agency.  Carolina will be in Quebec City for next season.  Done Done Done.

"Under Bettman, the NHL has seen rapid growth of league revenues, from $400 million when he was hired to over $3.0 billion." I would say he's handling the business side just fine.

If they are, it needs to be announced before the draft and free agency. The deadline is the BOG meeting later this month.

Thats weird cause hes certainly been wildly successful at the helm. Stats doesnt stop the masses of know-it-alls, with no formal business training or education to speak of, from pretending they know how to run a multi billion dollar league or how the inner workings even work, though.
