Flames sign Czech goaltender David Rittich to 1-year contract

CALGARY — The Calgary Flameshave signed Czech goaltender David Rittich to a one-year contract.

The 23-year-old spent the past two seasons with BK Mlada Boleslav in the Czech elite league.

Rittich’s record in 2015-16 was 26-22-0 with a 2.53 goals-against average and a .917 save percentage.

The six-foot-four, 202-pound netminder agreed to a two-way deal with the Flames.

Calgary’s goaltending situation requires attention. Karri Ramo, who signed a one-year deal with the Flames last year, suffered a season-ending knee injury in February.

Joni Ortio, 25, split his time between the Flames and their AHL team in Stockton, Calif., last season. He will become a restricted free agent this summer.

The Flames did not re-sign Jonas Hiller, who is headed to EHC Biel of the Swiss Elite League.

Average numbers in a pooh league.

Good signing Calgary.

Goaltenders are a crapshoot. This guy could end up in the ECHL or their starting goaltender

...Sounds like status quo in Calgary, post-Kiprusoff.

Never ever occured to the Flames management that Kiprusoff would get old and retire, or that they perhaps would need a replacement one day. Now their goaltending situation is a matter of who is the least bad.

I wouldn't say that. The Flames have actually tried to draft and groom a starter, but it never worked out in the past. They drafted Brent Krahn at 8th overall, Leland Irving at #23, Andrei Medvedev at #56...but none of them ended up even a decent back-up. The one guy who did pan out was Craig Anderson, but not until long after he'd been lost to waivers (they drafted him in '99!).

But Flames have a couple decent guys in the system in Jon Gillies and Mason MacDonald. However, Gillies' injury last year is an early warning flag.

One may argue that Mcdonald is not very good. He didn't have a good championship this year.

Is that the guy they chose over Demko? Hahahahah ahahahahahahahahahahahahah (deep breath) ahahahahahahahahahahahahah

Demko is American. Demko wouldn't have been selectable.

What does being American have to do with anything? So Matthews isn't selectable? Woo-hoo I know who I want in FA *sarcasm*

I thought you were talking about Macdonald representing Team Canada for the juniors, which he did. He wasn't very good.

But yeah, they picked Macdonald over Demko in the draft.

Ummmm...he was on the Canadian Junior, which makes him arguably one of the top two U-20 goalies in the country.

Like others have said, goalies are a crapshoot. Who knows at this point if he'll be any good.

They had Treliving on the radio and he said the Flames goalie coach felt Rittich has a lot of raw tools. He's got the size at 6'4 and he's a pretty good athlete. His positioning is strong, but he does have a few holes in his game, which the Flames feel they can iron out.

Then we should hope that we'll get another crop of goalies, because he let in some pretty weak goals in that tournament. Practically a sieve. It didn't help that the rest of TC couldn't score, except Marner and Strome, the two biggest puckhogs in recent memory.

The team was a disaster from top to bottom.
