Primal Optimist
As it is New Years Day, I am going to put little effort into this one, but I WILL stick to my guns and produce the list, yes it is time for the After last weeks truncated Power Trends, this week will surely be full of some stunners and upsets, but every ranking is based on a simple algorithm, that is not subjective in any regards..the words however are all mine and while there won't be many words this week, they are my own, and in no way should be confused with the website or the league, this is just an independant thought blurb on the Power Trends Rankings, as I sees it. 1.Capitals(1) More players with double digits this week than literally most teams have players with any digits this week. Number 1 two weeks running. 2.Leafs(5)Moving up within the top five? Has to be Mikael Backlund leading that group of 19 strong competitors, what a player! 3.Kings(3) Like the Caps, I am not going to tell you what your doing right, as I am not sure I know what your doing right, but keep doing it all the way to the cup finals. 4.Islanders(6) 20 strong contributors helped move the isles back into the top five. 5.Blue Jackets(4) When your big loss week drops you to fifth in the power rankings and your the defending champ...nuff said. Another STAR week. 6.Wild(8) Imagine if they were deeper than the 15 guys who earned points this week? WOW. so much potential still, and already knocking on top 5. 7.Panthers(2) a big drop for Florida means only Justin Williams earned more than 20 points this week. Also missing Toffoli, Kruger and Paquette. 8.Lightning(10) moving up within the top 10 is hard to do, and is a definite power trend for the Bolts, Hedman would be the story if 18 others didn't help. Deep Team with deep results. What if Chad Johnson won his only game this week or had more games? I see Tampa going higher sooner. 9.Devils(9) Staying put in the top nine of the Tesla Power Trends is its own feat of strength, Festivus starts with the Airing of Grievances and in New Jersey there appear to be very few of those. Well rounded 18 guys kicking in. Hickey stands out like a neck blemish with 28 points. 10.Flames(17) Up seven spots means the flames are doing right, depth wise. No big spenders, but 10 dudes over 10 points in the mix. 11.Penguins(15) Pittsburgh riding high on 16 smooth skaters putting up points Ten of them over ten each. This is a team effort thing. 12.Sens(7) When Vasilevsky earns more points than the lowest 15 scorers on your roster combined, your in trouble. 7 dudes and a goalie won't stop this freefall. 13.Canucks(24) Ten guys with more than 10 points is why last weeks 24th is now one spot below last weeks 7th and soon to be above them. 14.Predators(19) Millers 30 points helped move the dial in the right direction for Nashville, Smooth Country, I love that channel. 15.Coyotes(18) Its a special moment when a team moves into the top half of the power trend rankings, and its special for 16 Desert Dogs this week, shudder to think what if the other 7 kicked in even a tripping call each.....Proving there is room on every team for 'that guy'. The guy they say has had his day in the NHL, might be just the fourth liner in the GML. 16.Sabres(16) Something to be said for staying put in the middle of a volatile league. No Jake Allen points either, or Buffalo might have even moved up. 17.Canadiens(13) Brent Burns ought to be wearing the hard hat in the room this week, without him the bottom third would have been likely. 18.Jets(14) These Jets will continue to not stay good as long as they are shut in a room and grounded. Where is papa these days? 19.Bruins(12) Three reasons these Boston Cream Puffs are not substantially lower Elliot in net, Stepan and Reinhart down the middle. Stinky everywhere else. 20.Ducks(26) John Madden said "your best players gotta be your best players" and team leading Ryan McDonagh certainly led this week with 36 points!!!! Moving the ducks barely, yet INTO the middle third. Good things start here. 21.Flyers(28) You can move up when your best 14 players deliver. What if the other nine thought to do the same? 22.Red Wings(11) Worst totals of the week, bar none. Now lets try bar down and see how that goes. 10 guys under ten points and 3 guys over. 23.Sharks(27) Sixteen players helped move the sharks to 15th in points this week, which in turn moved their Power Trend line to 23rd overall. Nice. 24.Oilers(22) The Oilers really didn't do any worse than other weeks, but not improving while those around you do, is like getting worse by acclimation. 25.Stars(20)To drop five places within the bottom third points to one injured goalie, yikes. 26.Rangers(25) 15 guys chipped in, 8 with more than ten points each, but it isn't enough to move out of 30th overall, even with three better weeks running. 27.Blues(21) St Louis is up and down like a "hors drawers" Speaking of the Red Light, only 14 players barely managed to light the lamp this week. 28.BlackHawks(29) Hawks managed to be middle third for points this week, but the trailing edge of last weeks performance kept them from more than a single place rise. What can i say, it is a tough tough tough tough tough tough tough league, and getting tougher. 29.Hurricanes(23) Well rounded but unchanged lineup from October 11th is just one suggestion as to why the Canes are not really moving anywhere but down. Complacency in this league will doom you. If you hire a private eye, start him looking at Greg Campbell...... 30.Avelanche(30) When your at the bottom of the power rankings, you have one advantage: all the waived players you can eat and your gonna want those calories, trust us. This week is mostly about the meta data....5 unchanged teams, 13 teams moved up in the Power Trends and 12 teams dropped at least one ranking. For a lot of teams that dropped, it was more that they got passed by a more powerful, yet lower ranked team last week (roughly 7 of the 11 that dropped didn't do worse, they just didn't improve as much as others that passed em) A total of three of the teams moving up REALLY moved up, shaking the Tesla Power Trends on their way! I might not get a zinger on each team, but will try to put in two cents worth on more than half before midnight when the PTW gets reset on pickuphockey. Thanks for reading. Okay WOW, I got all 30 blurbs done, 8 mins to spare before the PTW reset on pickup. Again, no offense, its all meant in good humour, and if I made you mad with my adlib comment, I am always sorry, but maybe next week you shouldn't hang out in the sad trombone section. Primal Optimist
Pretty cool matchup at the WJC's tonight....Rangers prospects Dylan Strome, Team Canada Captain mind you, will face team leader and fellow Rangers Prospect Filip Chlapik in a loser leaves town match. It is the knockout round....and since there can be only one, we must go with Team Canada and Strome. Filip will understand, he is a leader on the Czech team and has 3 points in 4 games with no penalty minutes. Strome on the other hand has 8 points in 4 games and 8 penalty minutes. GO CANADA GO! And have a wonderful game Filip Chlapik.

aGENT
Heard a bit of a certain Shane Malloy on my drive home listening to Bmac and Don. Nice to hear preaching patience with the likes of Virtanen and promoting the quiet quality of Juolevi etc. Hopefully that rubs off on some of terrible sports network's largely terrible listeners (at least the ones who call in) Keep fighting the good fight guys!
