Let me be on the record as hating the pick when it occurred and hating it more and more as time passes, until he made a nice assist yesterday, at which time my hatred ceased to increase for a moment. bieksa.bounce
Sergachev was the D we needed. Oh well. I'm still optimistic about Juolevi but should not have taken him at 5.

And the same ones adimittly saying they believe OJ’s a better hockey player/pick would be saying the same thing about him if he was in Calgary system ....right. I don’t have anything against OJ I think he’ll be a very serviable dman for the Canucks in a few years.I just don’t see him as a special player or a player you build around he doesn’t bring anything unique or above average.i wasn’t impressed in training camp where he looked lost and in the wjc he’s played a like a safe/solid #3/4 dman he’s got good passing and skates well. AHL eligible next season and most likely where he be. I guess my expectation of a guy taken 5th overall is a bit higher than an average player making his nhl debut 3-4 years after his draft. Funny. You just described Tkachuk. 1
Alflives
1 hour ago, Blömqvist said: By all accounts that's something he has been working on with Salo. He was always a good defender and this year under Salo's tutelage Juolevi is learning to use his skating and stick work to neutralize and angle off opposition forwards and to use his body to free up pucks. He's learning to play proactively using his skating, stick, and body to neutralize opposition offensive threats when they come into his zone. To to be honest, I would've been quite happy that he's learning to play a solid defensive game, but on top of that his transition game (see: controlled defensive zone exits + minimal failure rate) and offensive game seem to be picking up quite nicely as well. Ryan Suter type player. Not flashy. Not overly physical despite having pretty good size. But he will play in all situations, be your top shutdown guy and have multiple 30-40 point seasons. Yes, that’s all good that he’s developing his game so nicely. I’m referring to his natural courage when taking body contact to free up pucks along the walls, especially the end wall on dump ins. He’s much like Tanev in that regard. Juiolevi takes hits to make plays. I’ve noticed the other Finn D, and a lot of the d in the tournament, simply poke at the puck, trying to move it to a teammate, to avoid the contact. I think Olli is going to be a really good player for us for many years.
Down by the River
OJ hasn't had a great game, but the Finnish PK is terrible when he isn't out there.
Smashian Kassian
I think Juolevi has been pretty good so far. He's just so good at moving the puck. Edited December 31, 2017 by Smashian Kassian
flickyoursedin
Juolevi’s game yesterday! He plays such a calm and smart game. Puck possession is incredible and it always seems like he’s making the right plays.
Derp...
He's having a good game. I've liked his patience and passing in the offensive zone. You know once he gets up to the NHL Boeser is going to be getting the puck with room to move from Juolevi. Juolevi has shown he can play very well with strong right handed shooters. The problem is he hasn't played with any in a while. 1

CRAZY_4_NAZZY
I like how smooth his game, but still needs to be more assertive in his own zone. He has that thick frame, use it to his advantage...use his body to cut off lanes, and lean on the smaller bodies.

Odd.
Why does Finland always have a defenseman lining up against the wingers? Who's supposed to get the puck if they win the faceoff? They did that in their last game and it ultimately led to them being scored.
Odd.
23 minutes ago, The 5th Line said: Are you talking about faceoffs in their own end? Every team does the same thing and at every level, and of course the defenceman is supposed to go back and get it I kinda worded it wrong. For example the LHD lines up just in front of the goaltender on the right defensive zone. The left winger is behind the right winger who is on the leftside of the centerman, and the RHD defenseman is lined up on the right side. And vice-versa for the other faceoff circle. Shouldn't one of the the wingers (depending on side of the faceoff) be just in front of the net ready to go the half boards when the RHD or LHD races back to get the puck? Instead they have a defenseman that's way up in front of the net which allows the opposition to jump and get behind leaving the winger out of position. I remember they had this sequence in their last game which resulted in a GA. I don't know, might just be over thinking. Edited December 31, 2017 by Odd. rekker
To me OJ is the best Fin D. You could argue Heiskinan is and you could be right. What I don't get is OJ's time in ice. I would play him more if I was coaching. The winning goal went in on the third pairing D with a minute half left. WTF. I would of played the top two pairs for the last 2 or 3 sets of $&!#s of the game. Even the games in general. I would sit the third pairing way more. Ihatetomatoes
Good game by Juolevi, Didn't see him make any mistakes and defended well when he was on the ice. Didn't get matched up against USA's top line very much but when he did he defended well. Definitely plays an "efficient" style of game, it's kinda funny because you could almost describe him as lazy sometimes. But when needed he will definitely put in the effort to win battles. You can see he puts a lot of pride in winning battles for the puck. Also liked the way he would jump into the rush whenever there was an opportunity. Probably the best game I saw him play, wish the coach depended on him more to play against the top lines though to bring more of a challenge
