That's what you want to see from a prospect. Stepping it up when the pressure mounts. I'm still not 100% sure why he was used as the 5th shooter in the shootout. If you're going to use a D might as well put them in early. Regardless, the Finnish forwards were the ones who couldn't get it done this tournament. There D was very good, but they couldn't get much out of there forward group save for 2 or 3 guys. They should have taken Kotkaniemi!!!!!!! Juolevi was, by far, the best Finn in the two games I watched in this tournament. He's never going to be flashy, but he is a pretty sure thing top 3 dman. People just need to be patient.
ilduce39
Missed this one but nice to see Olli elevate his game for the knockout round. Too bad they couldn’t advance. He might start in the AHL but I think he makes his Canucks debut next year. Offensively and in transition I think the stronger his teammates the better he’ll look - the jump to the NHL will only make him better as teammates can capitalize on his quick puck movement. For sure. Finland's bottom half to third of their roster wouldn't of gotten a sniff on team Canada.
rekker
JO plays a compact game. He relies on others to be where they are supposed to be. Especially his d partner. This bodes well for the pro game.
mll
The coaches selected Juolevi as the best player for Finland over the tournament with Koppanen and Tolvanen.

That would be interesting seeing he was already having an historic season for a U-20 Dman in the Finnish league.

Is is voted on by other coaches? To me, having your opponents name you a top player is the most meaningful form of recognition. Takes it over several 1st rounders on Finland’s back end. Just goes to show how much the Tkachuk-huggers know calling him a “disappointment” this tourney.

Their coach left me scratching my head a few times with his player deployment.

Still says something about Juolevi considering that Finland had four other first-round picks on their blueline.

In some ways more surprising as he started on the 2nd pair and they used him more and more as the tourney progressed. He earned it.
Popular Post PhillipBlunt
Juolevi proved in this tournament what he is capable of, and just how good of a player he really is. 2 3

There's 'player of the game selected by the team' and 'best players of the team selected by coaches'. I always thought that the three best players of the tournament of a team were selected by coaches of participating teams re also the way it's labelled 'selected by coaches' vs 'by the team'. rekker
Thing I noticed as well was when OJ was on the ice Finland was soon out of the zone and in transition. Seems the other Finnish D pairings were hemmed in quite often. Happy for the kid and his performance today.
Popular Post HC20.0
Saw shades of 2011 Hamhuis/Matthias Ohlund in his performance this year. As soon as the puck hit his stick, it was out of his zone. Just can't get over the amount of hockey IQ this kid has. His way of just slowing down the game to play a fantastic defensive game is just uncanny. He's special guys, and we're lucky to have this kid. I don't think Juolevi is going put up many points, but he might very well be one of the best defensemen we'll ever have. Like a better Ohlund. 1 1

Great dmen have that skill. It can't be taught.
cyoung
Rarely made mistakes, crisp tape to tape passes. Loved what I saw. We need a defenseman like him.
