Oh man. I gotta admit I was fretting a little when Domi was crushing it and Nychuskin looked like the next Hossa.  Still always liked the Horvat pick though just because you could tell he had the right attitude to be a pro but those first few years there made it tough. I don't think too many expected Horvat to have this much offensive game at the NHL level....He's still improving too. Love it

What kept the faith in  Horvat for me was the praise heaped on him by various junior coaches at the time. I guess they do no more about hockey than us.

Yeah  I do remember that. I also remember Canada not even medalling that year. Maybe he should have had Brendan "third or fourth line player" gaunce on the team instead of Gauthier, leier, petal, and rychel, who all struggled emmensly that tournament and are not even really nhl players. As a team we struggled to score, defend and win faceoffs that year, all of which gaunce excels at (scored in jr). The tournament was also in Sweden on big ice. You think they would have had gaunce on the team even if it was just his familiarity with it considering he played on international ice for the majority of his JR career.

I'm glad we're back to our winning ways but team Canada's thick headedness cost us some winning years. For a while it was a popularity contest to make the team not the best performance.

Rant over.

Juolevi and Palmu are playing today, TPS vs Jukurit, deadlocked at 1-1 late I n the third.

Just for fun, here’s Olli’s shot location chart so far:

Not his most active game (in terms of total SOG) but the chart still makes me happy because it’s such a good indicator of how much he moves around the zone and his two primary offensive areas, (1) the point/top of the zone and (2) coming off the left halfboards.

Nice. Thanks.

One thing I find very interesting is that there were only 5 Finnish D in the NHL last year, there are only 6 this year

At the same time Finland seems to be in a golden age of developing NHL talent right now. Just look at how many finns have gone in the top 10 in the last few years. You would have never seen that in the past.

Seeing a lot of people 'projecting' Olli as a 2-4 defenseman at best.

What on earth is this based on? He is second all-time in terms of points per game for U20 defeseman (He's only 19)

Gimme a break. Starting to get tired of it.

Same kinds of projections, and far worse, have been made about lots of Dmen, who became pretty good.  Robinson and Lidstrom come to mind.  Here’s a little bit about a young Lidstrom:  “The 18-year-old wasn’t physical, perhaps played a little soft but was too good for juniors. His senior-level coach didn’t consider him a top-six defenceman, so he sat on the bench and only got a few shifts here and there.”

It's based on Mathew Tkachuck, Sergachev and McAvoy already playing in the NHL.

If Heiskanen wasn't around the same time as OJ, OJ would be hyped as the top Finnish D prospect in recent years.

One guy I like to point out is John Klingberg, he is 25 and I am sure every single team in the league would have this guy on their top pairing. In John Klingbergs draft +2 year playing in Liiga he posted 3 points in 20 games. The next year he played in the SEL and posted 28 points in 50 games in his D+3 season before playing 3 games in the AHL where registered 1 point. At the age of 22 Klingberg started his draft +4 year in the AHL posting 12 points in 10 games to start the season before being called up to the NHL and putting up 40 points in 65 games.

What I am saying is Juolevi has legit potential to be a top pairing D even if he doesn't make the NHL until 22-23 and I think he is pretty underrated around here for what he has done this season.

Great post +1.

Thank you.

His game has always been more well rounded then offensive prowess. When people think number one dman they see flashy offensive point getter so right away they make these early projections. I think one thing everybody can agree on is he’s gonna be a workhorse and number 1 or not probably lead our defence in minutes on most nights.
