Yeah I get a bit tired with the Captain Hindisghting that seems to follow this player around like a black, angry cloud. 'BAD PICK!':frantic:

The day of the draft, either him or Tkachuck were perfectly acceptable picks at #5 (as would have Keller or Sergachev). I'm sure even some folks around here were pulling for Nylander or Jost. They were all largely (as far as my hazy recollection anyway) in the same, +/-next tier of players, outside the top 4.

NOBODY knew on draft day that Juolevi was going to be injured half of his 4, post draft years. And without those injuries there's a pretty strong likelihood the kid would have been thought of as a solid pick and possibly on the Canucks by now (if not the home run Tkachuck ended up as for Calgary).

But to try and act like the Canucks were absolute morons for taking him at 5 is hindsight, revisionist horse $&!#.

To be fair we reached a bit for Juolevi, the need for a puck moving Dman was too great. Tkachuk was a consensus top 5 pick.

I dunno, I didn’t mind the pick. Was supposed to be a safe pick over Tkachuk and Sergachev. Guys I personally wanted. But it’s over and done with. I just hope he gets healthy and can play in the NHL at all.

Ahead of the draft Benning was asked about the different prospects.  He said that in his opinion there was only 1 D that had the potential to become a D1.

I wonder if OJ is having some issues with his previous back injury/repair? if there's still some tissue there aggravating a nerve that could show up part way into a season as a lingering thing. Anyway hoping for the best for this kid.

Oh and ffs can we stop talking about Tkatpuke in this thread? this isn't the Tkachuk page.

And Juolevi was right there with him ranked anywhere from 5-7'ish. It wasn't a 'reach'.

Again, revisionist horse $&!#.

Can't remember where I saw the comment, but Pettersson was a bigger reach than Juolevi.

Sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn't.

The hindsight folks need to relax and just admit our drafting is very good regardless of the stats that are nitpicked to prove otherwise.

Hoping for a fast recovery for Juolevi and to get onto this team as soon as possible, he has a great skillset!

The Canucks press-release said lower body ailment.

Cue the Juolevi haters!!! I feel so bad for the kid,  the hockey gods are sure being mean to him, was really hoping he would play a few games with the Canucks this season. well here is hoping he has a fast recovery.  :(

I don't think it's hate if fans are unhappy that the guy can't stay healthy or make the NHL. I think it's more disappointment and regret.

Yeah, I had the understanding that he blocked a very hard shot and then left the ice.  Maybe @UticaHockey  can verify this?

OJ blocked two shots on the same PK but the one that really had him in pain got him in the arm just above the glove.  He stayed out there basically playing with one arm and blocked another slapper but I think that one was absorbed off the shin guard.  He stayed on the bench for a few minutes holding his arm in pain and then left for the dressing room.  He did come back out for the third period however and looked fine playing the rest of the game but missed the next game before JB announced he was going back to Vancouver.  I don't think the blocked shot had anything to do with the latest "lower body" injury.

I'm sure if you went even just to 6th overall for each of those, we would see OJ's name a handful of times. It wasn't that much of a reach. MT must've been like slightly better, and the Canucks went with the organizational need. Sure, at 5th overall it might not always be the right move. Then again, not having MT and other people like Nylander/Ehlers, Pastrnak etc... and all our other draft misses, also allowed us to be bad enough to nab EP at 5th OA and Hughes at 7th. I'll take those losses for the wins we eventually got. Because to be honest, I'd rather have Juolevi and Pettersson than Tkachuk and whoever else we would have had to pick instead of EP.

On the plus note, OJ is far from a bust and will eventually become an NHL calibre dman. He will be found gold now that the entire hope of the fanbase isn't solely on his shoulders, much like it was in 2016. We have Hughes, Woo, Tryamkin, Rathbone and company to help us out.
