Olli Juolevi | #48 | D

b3.

Recommended Posts

I'm not sure if he's our most NHL-ready prospect to be honest, he's got a long way to go physically before he can deal with NHL forwards, and Green is going to have to trust him with 12-15 minutes on our bottom pairing.

Rafferty, Rathbone, Chatfield and Sautner all bring a lot of competition to Juolevi so let's see who comes ready at training camp because I think one of them will get Fantenberg/Stecher's spot.

I think it will be more mental than physical for him. Olli isn't particularly small at 6'2" (though is fairly light at 182 lbs). I expect the speed of the game will be the hardest thing for him to adjust to. That loss of 0.5 seconds in decision making time can be brutal.

Long way to go physically?

I'm pretty sure hockeydb and eliteprospects websites aren't updated, last I read Olli is 6'3 and 200 lbs now.

Yeah I was surprised by those numbers. I remembered him as 6'3" and not particularly light.

I think Juolevi is gonna look great starting the year on the 3rd pairing - I hope Benning can land a decent, reliable bottom pairing RHD with NHL exp. for him to play with. A Juolevi - Vatanen bottom pairing would be unreal if he could fit under the cap- maybe a pandemic bargain. Or maybe a younger bottom pairing of Madison Bowey & Juolevi.

maybe Hamonic is a better idea, a non-flashy partner that can actually help guide him with the defensive part of his game. Not sure thats Vatanen.

Now 22, he’s the only player selected in the top 10 of the 2016 draft yet to have made his regular-season debut and one of only four in the first round as a whole. His selection will forever be compared with the other player available at fifth overall that year, Matthew Tkachuk, and the two most notable defencemen to go after him, Mikhail Sergachev at ninth overall and Charlie McAvoy at 14th overall.

Cody Severtson has been covering the Comets with a heavy eye toward data on his Comets Harvest blog for two seasons.

“Juolevi’s biggest detriment throughout his 2019-20 AHL campaign was his inability to defend the rush. Juolevi’s ability to pivot in the defensive zone while forwards cut to the outside for rush-shot attempts was molasses-like,” Severtson said.

At even strength, Cull and his coaching staff often had Juolevi deployed alongside Ashton Sautner, one of the Comets’ most reliable and rugged blue-liners, facing down the opposition’s top forwards.

My question is why did we draft this kid

Given the fact that Tanev’s gone and reportedly one of OJs best traits is his PK ability I see OJ taking that 3rd pair LD spot.

It’s about time we see him in the bigs. Should be exciting.

Hopefully if we are able to clear a bit of cap we can add a solid 3rd pair defenseman that can play with him. I still like Hainsey...

Do you understand how injuries work? It's well known his knee wasn't fully healed and he struggled to pivot and skate early on when he started playing but he became better at defending the rush as the months passed by. He looked really good at camp and even got into a game in the playoffs.

We drafted him because he was the best all around d man at the time of the draft.

Stop regurgitating the same thing over and over again lol

Great post he was ranked best D man of that draft ? He has had bad luck back issues training at 19, then Knee injury that happened t 20 years old in October after 17 games.. Comes Back at age 21 knee issues at start of season and then he was fine..Mini training camp in July he was very good made the team for playoffs and coach was impressed...I still see a #4 D man only 22 years old 6'2 great vision with bright future..Next season whenever it starts he will be #6 guy and move up with confidence now.... Futures exciting with D man coming up, Juolevi, Rathbone, Rafferty and Briesbois....Rathbone will also turn heads very soon....
