Could we trade him for another team’s disappointment, or a draft pick?

I would wait till next offseason to get rid of him if he doesn’t improve enough over the course of this season. I don’t think is value would be any different in that sort of scenario.

I’ve been behind OJ, but his rolling around on the ice has me seriously questioning if he’s got what it takes to compete (sacrifice) at the highest level.

All we can hope for is that he sees it as a wake up call and ups his seriousness.

He isn’t at Virtanen-like immaturity/personality levels and I am not giving him the excuse of COVID/injury this year.

He will have to be better.

In OJ's defense, it's *ALOT* harder to break into the NHL as a defenseman than a winger.  Easier to slot in a guy up front who's 'not ready' (but sort of close) than on the blueline where any mistake could lead to a decent scoring chance against you.  That said, at some point he has to show real improvement (regardless of any "excuse").

For the jack asses that were saying it doesn't matter and calling everyone stupid, yes the bag skate matters. Green explicitly said several times leading up to camp and during camp that it is a conditioning test by design to see what kind of shape the guys are in. There's a reason they do this every year. They time them and compare them so they can see who took things seriously in the summer and who was playing Fortnite.

When you hear the Veterans clearly not impressed with OJ during the skate and now the coach rips him, it's very obvious he's not in the shape he should be.

I was talking about more of the compete levels and seriousness of being a pro hockey player.

He’s been to camp before. He knows there are spots available. It doesn’t look like he was as prepared as others fighting for those spots.

I am finding a hard time figuring out why OJ is in the position he is in given that he isn’t like Virtanen(personality/immaturity wise). It doesn’t sound like injuries are an excuse anymore with Green stating he didn’t do himself any favours.

I like OJ and came to his defence a lot last year but this is the year he needs to prove he deserves a spot moving forward.

Management is in a higher gear to improve than ever before. He may end up being left behind if he isn’t able to improve this year especially considering we have other young D in the system coming up.

I hope he does improve. He has an interesting skill set that would go well with what we have.

I think there will be a team out there willing to take a free flyer on a guy. Hes a former 5th overall, he’s young, he showed some decent potential in a short amount of time. Carries a low cap hit, its a low risk waiver guy. If he doesnt pan out, he gets put back on waivers. The reason I could see him getting claimed is despite some injuries and the length of time he has spent rehabilitating etc, he’s shown some potential in a small sample size and is still a relatively unknown. Someone could take a chance and give him an opportunity and he could very well flourish with a couple healthy seasons. I’d rather gamble on the unknown than gamble on a guy who is clearly waiver bound because he is not NHL quality. Low risk high reward. Wouldnt you think?

I get thats how you feel and thats your honest view/opinion and i respect that. But I think we need to consider his past history of knee surgeries and back surgeries at a young age, the kid has hardly gone a mile in the league and has gone through more repairs than a Ford. His slow turns could still be part of a long road to back/knee recovery. Those are some serious area’s to rehab and get back up to the professional level. That being said, that could be a deterrent for claiming him on waivers, but at the same time he’s basically being put in a box at the side of the road with a free sign. Who wouldnt take a look and see if they have use?

The thing with waivers is he needs to stay on a roster or go back on waivers and we get first dibs? I just don't see a scenario where he beats out Rathbone. Maybe if there are injuries. I support my team and if your a Canuck, I pretty much stand behind the player. I'm just seeing a patern of weakness and brittle health with this player. I hope he finds his groove and I'm wrong. I really do. Kids got good skills and smarts.

fkn embarrassing man

Ya. That's just not a good look. Feel for the kid if this is a Covid or injury thing. If this is just showing up out of shape? I have no pity. Your young, fighting for a spot. If you can't show up to camp in the best leugue in the world ready to kick ass, you don't belong.

He may not beat out Rathbone and thats a completely fair statement.  But if Rathbone doesnt require waivers and Juolevi does, would it not be better asset management to send Rathbone down and keep Juolevi up? And say if injury occurs, Rathbone can come up. Why risk losing a prospect for nothing, when the kid has hardly had a fair shake. Also Idk if Juolevi is brittle or just had some bad luck, sorta like Salo. Just because a guy gets injured lots doesnt mean hes brittle, he just plays a really hard f***ing game. Personally I’d like to see Juolevi get caught up to game shape after all hes gone through the past couple years and then see where hes at before I make my own personal assessment

I really don't think anyone takes OJ on waivers. Pretty sure he clears. At some point you have to just reward hard work. Rathbone has been looking good by all accounts.

What does weakness look like?  It’s the friggin’ NHL.  I’m officially off the OJ train.  He’s dead to me.

Rathbone looks great and thats awesome, but we’re also comparing a guy whos been healthy and a guy who was just recently seriously ill with COVID, lost weight and who knows how he has recovered? Im happy either way, but I’d like to give OJ a fair evaluation and not risk losing a potential top 4 dman to a rival for nothing. How pissed would you be if we lost him to Calgary and he turns into a Dan Hamhuis kinda guy minus the hipchecks. We could manage our assets a little better and get a full read on both and then make the choice to move on

Weakness is a guy who wont push himself to point of breaking. Wont do anything and everything at all costs, wont give it all he’s got to help the team succeed. If you want camp full of guys standing around at the end of practice at the end of a bag skate, go cheer for your lovely Toronto 3-1 series lead Maple Leafs. I’ll cheer for the guys who collapse at the end of a game and dig deep to pull out a win. Montreal won because they dug deep. Toronto didnt and that starts at training camp and continues through practice. Its the guys who give it all in practice that give you the best chance to win in a game, not the guys who half ass it in practice and then dont know how to push hard in a game. There is nothing to win in practice, a guy who will push himself to the point of breaking down in a practice, is a winner. Plain and simple.

Exactly! I’m ready to waive this dud…one of the Alberta teams can take a chance on him.

And that’s why his teammates were telling him to get his ass up?
